What to do about muscle imbalances 🤯

  • How should you workout if you have muscle imbalances?
    1. Match reps per side, with a caveat. Most people do the weak side first, then stop their strong side. Instead, try pushing the strong side as normal then matching the weak side with as many rest pause sets as needed.
    2. Let your technique change side to side. We're asymmetrical by design, so we shouldn't expect both sides to move the exact same. Need to rotate your leg out more? Rotate your arm in more? Do it. If you force yourself to be unnaturally symmetrical it may be limiting your comfort and performance on the weaker side.
    3. Stop worrying about it. No matter what you see on social media, imbalances don't always lead to pain or performance issues. Often, they HELP performance e.g. in elite athletes. And what CAN lead to pain is catastrophizing about a problem that doesn't exist i.e. the nocebo effect.

      Why is starting with the weaker side bad?

    • @reko001
      @reko001 Před měsícem +10

      @@Mido_ What he means is starting with weaker side and doing the same number of reps with stronger side. You should not do that because the progress on stronger side is slower than progress on the weaker side and it will eventually catch up.

      @bellevuepersonaltraining4602 Před měsícem

      Preventing a future issue before it becomes a chronic pain cycle is worth some investment of time. It's not a black and white issue though so it takes a fair amount of experience to navigate the nuance and context of what to worry about and what to let play out. Aesthetics is the least priority to worry about since many contextual issues around muscle imbalances have more to do with the nervous system, proprioception, and coordination and not visible differences in the actual muscle tissue.
      For example if I have a client that is an avid runner and one of their legs turns out significantly when they walk
      un, whether they already have pain or not, I'm going to address it so it doesn't become a problem or bigger problem down the road. For body builders this might not be much of an issue, but for athletes while yes some imbalances serve a functional benefit, it still has to be monitored and managed to make sure what helps their performance in the moment doesn't break their body down faster and cut their career short.
