- A segment Joe produced for the TV show MotorWeek as part of their "Muscle Car Memories" series.
The Buick Regal Grand National steals the spotlight in most discussions about 80's muscle cars, but for one year only Buick allowed buyers to outfit the luxurious Regal Limited with the same turbo V6 powertrain as the GN. The result was this velour-lined rocket. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
That interior makes modern interiors look stressful.
One of the biggest mistakes General Motors made was switching the Buick Regal, Chevy Monte Carlo, Oldsmobile Cutlass, and Pontiac Grand Prix over to front wheel drive for the 1988 model year. They should have left them rear wheel drive and made them available with the same engines used in the Camaro and Firebird. I swapped a 455 Buick engine into my 1983 Grand Prix and I love it to death. I added a few goodies like 12 inch long glasspack mufflers and a 160 MPH Autometer speedometer. I want to find out fast it can go but I always get scared when I get up to about 150 or 155 and then I will slow down.
@blackandgold51 they are better in the snow. as a classic vehicle no one drives them in the snow but when they were marketed new they were sold as daily drivers, especially the base model cars.
the other consideration is from a manufacturing side, i believe FWD is easier from a production standpoint.
later FWD GM cars had some fun to drive regals and grand prix..... i have owned several GTP's they are great cars, but the transmission becomes the weak link if you modify them too far.
@@ad356 my 85 Regal does fine in snow.
Love the pillow seats. Grandma thinks such a comfortable car. Such a nice ride to church then you get on it because you are late and get there early.. 🤣🇺🇸
I always liked that Rosewood color. That car would be even better with the saddle tan interior.
Indeed, it's beautiful.
This is one of my top 5 favorite cars.
Thanks for covering this vehicle.
Thanks for watching!
What a time, 15 years before youd be the laughing stock of town having a v6. A gas crunch and a turbo later it's a classic.
I had a 1987 Buick Regal T-Type with T-tops. it was cool.
Wow!!! And the young ones nowadays think a turbo charged V6 debuted with the Ecoboost.
That's a 4 cylinder. They have Google too though, tell them to look it up.
Yeah, most young people are surprisingly well informed. They know all about turbo 4s and 6s. After all, that's what a lot of their favorite cars have!
Beautiful Buick. The G-Body platform is 1 of my favorite.
Motorweek??? Ahhh, it all makes sense now. Good job, on this segment. Love the sleeper image, as well.
Thanks for watching!
Velour and a turbocharger in the same car? Does it get any better than that?
No it doesn't! Haha.
@@AutoMoments Keep up the great work!
Had an 87 TType back in 87. Grey with burgundy cloth interior. It kicked everyone’s ass!
I think the gold standard from this was the white color without blackout package and Vinyl roof
Now that's was a sleeper Brougham
I have one of these, my aunt Carolyn bought it new in 87, I got it from her in 97 and still drive it to this day on weekends, and I love sitting at a traffic light and just flooring it when it turns green and it just hauls ass down the road.
Love my 76 Buick Regal 3.8l. My daily driver,✌️ out from CALI 😎
Awesome car, and an awesome segment covering it. One of the best looking, and going, cars of the 80s!
Thanks for watching! Be sure to share it with your friends!
Although I'm not a GM car guy, this is one of my favourite cars, the Buick Regal Limited. :)
Two of my favourite YT channels. Thanks Joe!
Thanks for watching!
Such a cool car, never knew this package existed. Thanks for the vid!
I really love theses Regals!
Great video - keep it up!
Thanks for watching!
Yes! New video!
Hope one day you can review a Ford Excursion 7.3
@blackandgold51 the K5 blazer came similarly equipped. the military bought a ton of them
My 82 Buick Rega v6 now with a sbc. 406 is in my garage. Had it since 1996.
Awesome video. New subber. Would love to see more videos like this one.
The Grand National was not a performance package, it was strictly an appearance package.
The GNX was the performance package.
Man, this has been on my list since 87. Middle school days. Guess I better get to making money. 😀
Prices are only going up, sadly...
I didn’t realise you worked at Motor Week! Love that channel
Thanks for watching!
Just out of curiosity, how does one go about becoming an automotive journalist? It seems like a great job for an auto enthusiast to be able to experience old and new vehicles and connect with the automotive community.
There's no one "right" way to do it. MotorWeek had an opening, and I applied and got hired. But before that I made CZcams videos about cars, and I kept doing that after, too.
My advice is practice your writing, photography, and video skills. Auto journalists spend way more time working on those parts of the job than actually driving the cars! Haha. Thanks for watching!
I have one and it just amazes me when i get into it, the WHEEOOHEEEEEEEEÉEEEEEEEEEE HUOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Very cool wish that I had one
Wish Buick offered a 5 Speed Manual in the performance versions of the 80's Regals.
I bought a new 1987 Buick Century T-Type. It had a 3.8 L V-6 (standard was a 3.1), all black, and no chrome (kinda like a GN package). It had stiffer suspension, bucket seats with console and floor shift, and a ribbon tach like in the video. I've owned seven or eight Buicks, that Century T-Type was the worst of the bunch (major issues with the electronics!). Best one I owned was an 87 Regal Gran Sport (3800 Series II with a supercharger).
That car in the video is in pristine original shape.....and I do mean original right down the stock MAF sensor and Powermaster brake system. Where did you pull this time capsule from?????
Thanks Mike. I'm the second owner. Just 18k miles. She'll be at the MAGNA show in September.
@@jeffmiller3284 18k. Wow. Guess you'll never part with it?
@lee hancock everything is for sale for the right price 😉
It's a wonderful car, for sure. Thanks to Jeff for letting me drive it!
@@jeffmiller3284 It is indeed a nice car and looks like it is living a good life. Love that Rosewood color too......I have a white limited with astroroof, and she is no where near the shape your car is in.....but it does run 10's though.....
I thought I had seen you on that program.
Hey, " used";to work for motor week. Hey bro. That's a resume builder no one can ever take from you!
Didnt gm use that same body for the regal and the Chevrolet monte carlo?
There never was a model known as the Grand National, all it was was a Buick Regal T-type, with the appearance package for grand national
Kevin Barry better do more home work.
Huh? What? Are you on planet Earth?
He’s kinda right. A GN is just T with a trim package
you get
GN wheels a spoiler
some badges blacked out bumpers bucket seats with console But to say it’s not it’s own model is a bit of a stretch
Sweet :)
Last gear in the hunt for another vehicle one of the vehicles I drove was a 1993 buick park ave ultra with a supercharged v6. Loved it and it only had 52k miles never seen winter. My only issue was the price. It was 3500 and had original coolant and trans fluid. So I walked because I mean... its gm, worthless. I do an to have one someday when I fine a better price and this regal reminds me of it a lot
u talk about The Grand National like it's a different car . It's just an appearance package for a Regal
When theses were new you couldn’t give them away they were weird. You could get vynl tops and T tops. The real sleepers were the t-types with all the chrome. The doors rattled when they were new and it nose dived like a submarine if you had to slam on the highly power assisted brakes.
Funny how time changes people's opinion on things. Haha Thanks for watching!
I would almost rather have that than a grand national
It's certainly less common!
And much less valuable than a GN these days. Everyone want the ‘87 GN even though they made almost 20x more GN’s that year
How much better would this series of cars have been if it came with a Getrag 5 speed manual?
Perhaps...but if you lift off the gas to shift gears, you loose turbo boost. As much fun as it is to shift your own gears, it's a hoot to just floor it and go! Thanks for watching!
Could you get 1 with t-tops??
I’ve seen many posts stating the GN was not iTs own model , just an appearance package. Sorry you haven’t done your homework. The bodies were the same, however the suspension, tires, interior, and exterior made it a model by itself. I’m pretty confident in my statement after working for Buick for two decades.
Calling all Regals the same model is as silly as saying a Mustang is the same model as a Mustang GT 500.
SORRY NOT SORRY.
The GN, T-Type and Turbo T are the same mechanically. The GN came with two-tone interior, black bumpers, badging, spoiler and wheels.
Always wanted to see the regal withe aero coupe rear window
Turbrougham.
Hahaha I love it!
The best thing to do with these is to put 85inch rims on these and donk them out.......
TQ was ridiculous for the time ...
I like the car, informative video, but hate the MotorWeek filming and cut--a-ways. Be original. That's why people subscribe to your channel. If I wanted MW, then I would sub to MW.
