1987 Buick Regal Limited Turbo - Muscle Car Memories | MotorWeek

  • A segment Joe produced for the TV show MotorWeek as part of their "Muscle Car Memories" series.
    The Buick Regal Grand National steals the spotlight in most discussions about 80's muscle cars, but for one year only Buick allowed buyers to outfit the luxurious Regal Limited with the same turbo V6 powertrain as the GN. The result was this velour-lined rocket.

    One of the biggest mistakes General Motors made was switching the Buick Regal, Chevy Monte Carlo, Oldsmobile Cutlass, and Pontiac Grand Prix over to front wheel drive for the 1988 model year. They should have left them rear wheel drive and made them available with the same engines used in the Camaro and Firebird. I swapped a 455 Buick engine into my 1983 Grand Prix and I love it to death. I added a few goodies like 12 inch long glasspack mufflers and a 160 MPH Autometer speedometer. I want to find out fast it can go but I always get scared when I get up to about 150 or 155 and then I will slow down.

      @blackandgold51 they are better in the snow. as a classic vehicle no one drives them in the snow but when they were marketed new they were sold as daily drivers, especially the base model cars.
      the other consideration is from a manufacturing side, i believe FWD is easier from a production standpoint.
      later FWD GM cars had some fun to drive regals and grand prix..... i have owned several GTP's they are great cars, but the transmission becomes the weak link if you modify them too far.

    • @AutoMoments
      @AutoMoments  Před 5 lety

      There's no one "right" way to do it. MotorWeek had an opening, and I applied and got hired. But before that I made CZcams videos about cars, and I kept doing that after, too.
      My advice is practice your writing, photography, and video skills. Auto journalists spend way more time working on those parts of the job than actually driving the cars! Haha. Thanks for watching!

    I bought a new 1987 Buick Century T-Type. It had a 3.8 L V-6 (standard was a 3.1), all black, and no chrome (kinda like a GN package). It had stiffer suspension, bucket seats with console and floor shift, and a ribbon tach like in the video. I've owned seven or eight Buicks, that Century T-Type was the worst of the bunch (major issues with the electronics!). Best one I owned was an 87 Regal Gran Sport (3800 Series II with a supercharger).

    Last gear in the hunt for another vehicle one of the vehicles I drove was a 1993 buick park ave ultra with a supercharged v6. Loved it and it only had 52k miles never seen winter. My only issue was the price. It was 3500 and had original coolant and trans fluid. So I walked because I mean... its gm, worthless. I do an to have one someday when I fine a better price and this regal reminds me of it a lot

    When theses were new you couldn’t give them away they were weird. You could get vynl tops and T tops. The real sleepers were the t-types with all the chrome. The doors rattled when they were new and it nose dived like a submarine if you had to slam on the highly power assisted brakes.

      Perhaps...but if you lift off the gas to shift gears, you loose turbo boost. As much fun as it is to shift your own gears, it's a hoot to just floor it and go! Thanks for watching!

    I’ve seen many posts stating the GN was not iTs own model , just an appearance package. Sorry you haven’t done your homework. The bodies were the same, however the suspension, tires, interior, and exterior made it a model by itself. I’m pretty confident in my statement after working for Buick for two decades.
    Calling all Regals the same model is as silly as saying a Mustang is the same model as a Mustang GT 500.
    SORRY NOT SORRY.
