    I think Hunter’s right on the money. I suspect that the Capitol would approach queerness w/ curiosity or fascination and would entertain it out of amusement and not bc its like… a human rights issue. Atst I can see some districts being less tolerant.
    A lot of ppl in the comments are saying that they wouldn’t care bc theres too much else going on, but theres a trend irl of the opposite being true. Places that are the least stable socially or economically tend to have more human rights issues. I could see some distorted version of the trans ppl in sports debate popping up as more of a Lottery situation where ppl are like “oh the trans girl should go instead of my son” or “oh they picked a trans guy and my daughter. Thats two girls. My daughter should’ve been safe”. Ppl are already rabid when the stakes are a girls’ junior soccer game; imagine the mess if it were actually life and death.
    I do think it would be fascinating to read an account of a trans kid in the hunger games universe. Do you count off the number of boys and girls in the your district and base your decision to transition b4 adulthood off of the outcome? Are we medically transitioning in the post apocalypse? Does your medical transition factor into which reaping bowl your name is in? What about nbs? If nb/ trans ppl were excluded entirely, would they object? Careers want to be chosen and kids in the poorer districts use the ability to put their names in several times to feed their families. Food for thought

      I think in a dystopian world like Panem, especially for the districts, I don't honestly think anyone would be struggling with gender dysphoria the way we do in real world America. If you look at tribes and very poverse places in real life, unlike homosexuality, gender dysphoria just isn't something that really happens. It's mostly because people don't have time to feel unease about their gender, their too busy trying to survive and feeling unease about their terrible situation. The mind tends to prioritize the most pressing matters at hand, and in a life or death situations of constant survival, gender isn't as important to your survival as food, water, shelter, and making sure your family survive is.
      And medical transition would absolutely NOT be available to district citizens. No way. The whole point is to oppress the districts and punish them as severely as possible. It's why Dill doesn't receive medical treatment for her tuberculosis, Bobbin doesn't receive a prosthetic arm, and Jessup doesn't receive treatment for his bat bite. If they don't offer basic medical care, they definitely don't care to offer people with gender dysphoria the chance to transition.

    • @a.s.2820
      @a.s.2820 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@elistari1050 I also doubt folks in the district would have access to regular healthcare, let alone opportunities to medically transition! But even in really unstable times and places, gender identity is still something people think about. I've mostly studied the social history of Latin America from the colonial to 20th century, so most examples I know of are from there, but even in times of significant strife and concern for everyday survival, we see cases of people expressing gender and identity in a way that is out of the norm.

    • @a.s.2820

      From what I remember of the books, it seemed like queerness wasn't really that big a concern in Panem? As in, bigotry of that kind doesn't seem to be as intense at least, compared to our world. It never does mention trans people, but I remember some parts of the books alluding to the idea that gay couples weren't a big deal. But I do wonder if that's different from how trans people are seen for sure :O There's already SO much going on in the world that in my head I like to imagine that racism and queerphobia and such are not super existent.

I’m wondering if during the wars they just forgot about non binary people. Or if it really is like america, where the poorer states don’t have time to be worrying about that, while the rich are free with their self expression. Either way. Barb azure is an open sapphic, so there’s that.

    I think Hunter Schafer misses the point. There are gay side characters from both District 12 and the Capitol, and Coriolanus is indifferent. I think that Suzanne Collins wrote all of this diversity into her books in order to prove that Capitol citizens only discriminate based on two things: class status and wether you're District or Capitol. Panem is much different than the society we live in. They may not be homophobic, racist, or ableist (this last one is debatable), but even in Coriolanus's childhood, class status means everything in the Capitol, and people from the Districts are treated as less than human.

    • @spazzyshortgirl23
      @spazzyshortgirl23 Před 21 dnem

      They are really ableist in the sense of survival: no one has the time or resources to be caring for severely disabled adults, or thinking about accessibility. A blind baker might survive, but a blind coal miner is dead. Greasy Sae’s granddaughter seems to be nonverbal, but self sufficient so they live a fairly decent life for D12. But an infant in need of advanced neonatal care would likely die, as people regularly starve to death and can’t afford doctors either. I wouldn’t be surprised if hydrocephalus would be common. A Seam kid isn’t going to be allowed to skip being in the mines just bc he’s overstimulated, that’s food for the day.
      Basically, you only live if you can support yourself because your family will suffer as well. They may however find a niche role for that person to fill in the community: I.e. different professions, giving certain jobs to that person.
      But chronic illness? Sorry Panem don’t care.

    He needs to dye his hair blonde, grow it out, and leave it lol.
    Or at the very least grow out his hair now.
    The way he styles his hair throws off his appearance completely.

      I mean, unless you are lgbt … because then it affects your whole life. I think that’s why people want to know, because they’d like to know where they fit into this fictional world. And also why Hunter’s answer is a disturbing because in her view only the most oppressive class is lgbt friendly lol
