  • "These earnest young Midlands entrepreneurs are the epitome of free enterprise in Margaret Thatcher's brave new Britain." - Tony Wilkinson.
Tony Wilkinson reports on the phenomenal rise of a small independent record label in Coventry, Two-Tone. The label is at the heart of the second wave of ska music, promoting groups like The Selecter and The Specials, bands who blend Jamaican rocksteady, ska and reggae with British punk.
Wilkinson chats to Jerry Dammers - the brainchild of Two-Tone and keyboard player The Specials -about the origin of both the label and the music, and singer Neville Staple about his vocal style and anti-violence stance.
Clip taken from Nationwide, originally broadcast on BBC One, 22 May, 1980.

44 years ago. Lordy. All of them young, earnest and hugely talented. Kids
producing an art form which was as English as HP Sauce. Wonderful .

Enjoyed every minute of the 2Tone era, still watch tribute bands and regularly listen to the music.
It was short n sweet but worth it.

I still remember being a 10 year old with my crew cut and wearing my monkey boots, plus a badge with 'Don't Call Me Ska Face' on the black and white background with a silhouette of a rude boy.....man I was so proud of that badge 😆✌️
Being a kid growing up in the midlands during the early 80s, bands like the Specials and UB40 were a big deal 👍

Even though I was born in 1984, I grew up listening to all these groups, as my dad was a mod. But he also loved Punk, Ska, R&B.

Fun! It came and went so fast, but it reverberated around the world through the 80s and still does to some degree.

There will never be anything greater than 2 -Tone music, it's influence is still out there today, it will never die, most of the 2 Tone bands are still going/touring in some shape or another. RIP Terry and Roger

Some of us never gave it up, still listen to me two tone, ska which is a genre of its own not incorrectly stated in the film as fusion of punk and reggae and northern soul... chasing 60 now and still the tunes are fresh to my ears :) A year later than this I myself ended up in a borstal in Redhill, 2 years Made in Britain was shown which was written on much of my casework as a rebel without a clue and in 84 a full documentary by Channel 4 was shown showing me in my skinheady punk glory that never gave up :D

I played that 'The Specials' album so many times it got worn down digitally on Spotify. I'm going to check out the TV series 'This Town' as it's got decent reviews. 5:05 just bumping into him in the street and chatting with him normally, you would never guess he's got those amazing piano skills.

I bought The Special's album, on the strength of the infectious A Message to you, Rudy.
Some of it was quite... dour(?) Unhappy.
Whatever, it was an introduction to old Jamaican music, none of which I'd ever heard before, and some of which I still have a great interest in.
*Poor Terry Hall. I hope he is at peace, after what appears to have been a tough life.

Thatcher had barely been in power before this exploded so the nod to her felt a little disingenuous. Wouldn't this all have happened anyway? I often wonder how different the UK's music scene would have been under alternative political circumstances. Could Ghost Town have been written a few years later and have had the same initial impact, its legacy notwithstanding? All rhetorical questions!

Absolutely fantastic. I wish the young as a tribe would come up with something like this today. Not just stuck on smartphones and social media looking for clickbait. This was true talented clickbait. The times they are a changin of course. Good footage even if it's from Jimmy Saville's mates.
