I lost 200 pounds on Atkins in 1975-1976. He was clear and understandable. People don't want to say the names Stillman or Atkins so they insist that "keto" is something entirely different. Well, with all the crazy add-ons, maybe it is. All I know is that if you keep track of actual carbs and keep them low, you will lose weight and feel better. My cholesterol went from way over 300 to 146. I don't remember the change in my triglycerides but it was dramatic, too. Eat real food. If your grandmother wouldn't recognize something as real food, it's probably not and you shouldn't eat it. And move around, take a walk. Be grateful.

Doctor Atkins Diet Revolution book saved my life two times. I lost 55 pounds last time. I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with a A1C of 8.1. Now that I'm back on the Akins diet my A1C has dropped down to 6.2. In another three months from now my A1C should be approximately 5.6. which mean I will no longer have type 2 diabetes. I also lost 50 pounds in the past three months following his diet with lots of added exercise. Just want people to know that Dr Atkins was always right and he saved many lives. He’s my hero.

so glad you said to eat protein that you can afford till you can afford better. I started with several plain hot dogs and a plate of liver fried in butter with onions and that filled me up enough that I could fast for 16h till I ate again the next day. I was afraid I was doing it wrong but it helped me lose a little weight. Now I can afford to purchase some reg. beef and pork and hopefully I will get to grass fed in a few months when I have extra money.

I guess I'm doing dirty Keto, I can't afford grass fed steaks, only the ground beef. 4 months on Keto, I'm not hungry. I'm looseing about one to two lbs a week. I'm no spring chicken. 72 years young. I feel better then I have in years. I only eat meat, eggs, dairy , fish and some berries n greens known then. I do drink my butter coffee in the early am. Green tea ,no sugar and water . I don't eat keto breads etc , no almond flour. . I only eat real food. Thank you for your help.

I love the Atkins diet. I also read a book called fat flush that uses lemon water first thing in the morning for cleansing the liver. They also recommend cranberry water throughout the day. Basically use fresh cranberries and boil them or Trader Joe’s cranberry juice with no sweetener. This helps cleanse the internal organs.
The one time I lost forty pounds, I only ate 750 calories a day. Eggs and toast for breakfast. A sandwich for lunch, no dinner. The no dinner part was excruciating for about two weeks but the weight just fell off.

Very complicated talk, al least for me. I don't think he explained it clearly. I am actually using Dr Westman's book "The New Atkins For A New You" and it works amazing for me. It is more vegetarian-friendly than the original Atkins. In terms of food recipes, most are pretty much used as keto-recipes, so for ordinary folk, it makes very little difference. The issue why I did not last on Keto was that it was too oily and it did not work well on my stomach, way too much emphasis on fats and oils. Atkins is more realistic for me. The results are incredible!

I felt like the heart surgeon was aggressively defensive and yet he said he purposely did keto a few weeks a year. I felt like the host did well just to keep the surgeon from railroading the show. As a patient I’m simply looking for the truth and I’m willing to experiment on myself. So far I’ve lost 15 pounds, reduced my A1c and continue to feel very strong during long hard hikes. I’m looking forward to getting my lab work done at about the six month point and see if those numbers, lipids, glucose and inflammation, are healthy. I’m glad they could all agree that avoiding sugars and junk foods is a good thing and I’m glad to see more qualified doctors stepping up to promote a healthy diet over a lifetime of medications.

You mention Keto and lazy Keto and dirty Keto and Atkins and New Atkins and Atkins induction but it is very unclear what is what and why it matters and the relationship between carbs and fat and protein. He stated that the main difference is that Atkins allowed 20 grams net carbs (that is, total carbs minus fiber and sugar alcohol grams) and keto only allows 20 total grams of carb. Atkins also had 4 phases, each of which allowed an increasing number of carbs until weight loss stopped and hunger returned. Keto resembles Atkins 1st and strictest phase, that of lnduction (which induced ketosis). Because Dr. Westman's diet is stricter and allows fewer total carbs, he compares it to a prescription strength drug, with a higher rate of success, whereas the Atkins method, being a little more relaxed in allowing more total carbs, may not be as effective and so is compared to an over-the- counter drug. Hopes this was of help.

I keep trying to complicate it by allowing certain healthy carbs etc but I am genuinely so fed up of being a compulsive eater (you would never know it by looking at me as I'm barely overweight but my whole mental life revoves around all of the food guilt and decisions etc.. draining and life sucking)
I am coming to this fresh with fire in my belly that I will not allow my flesh to dictate my life. Jesus says if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off! And if he is saying that even your most useful body part is not worth aving if its ruining your life, and if carbs are a world of temptation and confusion.. even when they are good...

@@AdaptYourLife Are ketones evidence of a keto diet? I just measured mine, they are 1.8. I wish they were higher. Yes, I am chasing ketones. A brain scan 5 years ago after a dizzy spell showed mild cerebral atrophy. I had another scan last year after nearly fainting, showing no change, thank God. Both times the ER doc said I wasn't getting enough sleep.
I think carnivore just carries keto to its logical endpoint. Science tells us there are no essential carbohydrates. Low carb is good, no carbs are essential...how could zero carbs not be better?
I did induction phase Atkins two years ago, continued it for four months, but I am lazy and got tired of counting carbs, shopping for veg, storing veg, preparing veg, throwing out spoiled veg, testing glucose, etc. I finally went zero carb after watching Jordan Peterson and his daughter Michaela.
I'm 73. I eat one meal a day, usually between 6PM and 9PM. No veg, zero carb. Last night I had four eggs and 1/3 pound sausage patty. The night before I had a 19oz New York steak. I have no carb cravings and have no need of food or snacks for at least 24 hours. Adapt Your Life Thanks. Looking forward to meeting you and others at Terre Haute on July 27. I don’t need to worry about the metabolism syndrome, then. My goal is to avoid dementia in my old age. (Also, if anything, I am underweight - due to divorce. Trying to get up to speed on autophagy and intermittent fasting for crepey, loose skin).

@@AdaptYourLife what would be the max per day? I don't have any sugar at all. I check all the labels and as much as possible avoid processed foods...bacon being the exception. So what would be the max sugar that could be consumed in bacon that has it...I'm not even looking at those that are cooked with maple syrup etc...this is just regular bacon but in the ingredients sugar shows up as corn syrup etc. Thank you!

      A. K. Fielding at Trehan's Treasures Studio if you are wanting to stick to Keto, then 20g total carbs per day. Carbs and sugar are counted the same. Unless you are having just meat or fat, sugar is found in most foods, even greens.

My husband has hypertension and is on ramapril. I know I should go to my go for advice and support with this but am afraid they will not be supportive. I am UK based, do you have any advice on how to get my G P on my side?

I would just have a lot of knowledge and information. Dr Jason Fung’s The Obesity Code might help. Once you’ve read it to saturation point you could lend it to your gp! Just say that you’re willing to be tested and monitored regularly so that they can be reassured that all is ok. The other factor to consider is mentioning that the ketogenic diet is a fast progressing modern diet and perhaps becoming more informed by having you as his examples of the diet and the results it can produce will be beneficial for him and his practice. After all, it’s also extremely good for type II diabetes patients in the main.
If you and your husband are doing this diet regardless then give it a while. Have some good, positive results to go armed with. Don’t leave it too long though as medications need to be monitored. If you are registered with a large practice then ask if there is a doctor that has some more extensive nutritional expertise or is a bit more modern in their views to just being pilled up.
I just told my doctor I was eating healthily and exercising. I personally don’t see how anyone can advocate that eating a lot of carbs is a good thing. My gp was fatter than me over a year ago and was lecturing me! Now I’m a normal weight with normal bp.
      Good luck.

My new, bright, young cardiologist does not subscribe to the KETO diet and does not want to talk with me getting off of my medications. I take lisinopril and fenofibrate. I hear you talk that being on KEtO long term is fine unless you are taking medication. I have been on KETO for one year. Until I find a new cardiologist, what are your thoughts whether I am in danger taking these two medications after being on Keto for a year? ( I have lost 40 lbs)!! My labs tests are back to normal.

Here's the main differences I found between the two. (most are actually doing Atkins diet plan when they think they're doing Keto without knowing it)., or parhaps Atkins should just be called Keto since it's technically ketogenic with similar carbs count).. They both focus on ketosis, high fat, moderate protein, and very low carbs (20 to 25 carbs a day being most common for both). So they seem pretty much the same, but here's the big difference: Keto also focuses on calorie restriction and reducing meals and time between meals whereas Atkins doesn't. This is because Atkins didn't want you to feel hungry, and once you're ketogenic, you natrually tend to eat less anyways.. I also believe he didnt want to body to go into starvation mode.. So three meals a day and even snacks wwere okay if you're hungry, if you crave food.. Whereas Keto today, wants you to eat less meals and often tie it with fastings, to reduce calories.. Whether this slows down your metabolism, I'm not sure. So whether one shoudl focus on calories while being low carb, that's what I"m not sure which is correct..

No. Atkins is a form of a ketogenic diet. Keto diets are considered 70% fat, 20% protein, 10% carb. They're all low carbohydrate diets. Depending on the amount of carbs and fight you consume will determine whether or not you're going to be in a ketogenic state.

Don't let anyone make it more complicated than it has to be . If it's got sugar don't eat it... I eat all the meat I want... cheese eggs pork rinds and tuna etc... it's so very simple and it works !!

There's no taking credit from anyone with keto. You don't need to buy anyone's book or line of food products. Science always builds upon the work of others and there were those doing a keto diet or Atkins long before he ever came along. Atkins name is on his diet but keto does not have the name of any single person attached to it.

I find it astonishing that anyone who is aware of the risks of artificial sweeteners, and oxalates causing troublesome symptoms, would say it is safe! Keto is a business for this doctor and many others. It is ok to lose weight, but balance is the only really safe way of eating and living.

    • @AdaptYourLife
      @AdaptYourLife  Před 4 lety +5

Linda Bell it’s not that we say artificial sweeteners are great for you but we have yet to see a human study showing adverse effects from using artificial sweeteners. The only study’s we know were done in mice. So we are not aware of the risks you mentioned. Dr. Westman makes a living from treating patients using nutrition rather than medications. Many of his patients won’t and don’t need to see him after he has reversed many of their chronic illnesses. Allowing his patients to use sweeteners as a bridge rather than sugar has saved their lives in many cases.
