    I currently have a 2006 Tundra and swear by it. The things will just run forever if you take care of them, and their resale value (especially the 4WD models) is crazy good. When I buy my next truck, it will be another Tundra.

  • @OneNotNumb
    @OneNotNumb Před 5 lety +30

    For my money, I would rather buy a stripped down Tundra than any other half ton on the market. It has the lowest depreciation, highest reliability, lowest maintenance costs, highest long term quality. Plus all the capability I need in a truck.

      @guy proulx they might indicate an experienced work forces decision to direct their pirchase dollars. Do you think reliabiability, build quality, and resale value might be a consideration of a workforce that typically spends 4 to 7 hours a day in their trucks.

    I just got a 2008 tundra 4x4 crewmax with 4 wheel pkg and tow pkg and 150,000 miles on it, It was a great price with a full carmax report, arter a 3.5 hour drive home I only got 14.2 miles per gallon. After a full cleaning of sensors, air filter replacement and cleaning thottle body with new plugs with I got 17.4 miles per gallon with all those mile I was truely happy. Toyota's ROCKS.

    Imo, the tundra TRD Pro is the best looking full size, the Tacoma TRD Pro is the best looking midsize, and the 4Runner TRD Pro (which I own) is the by far the best looking suv in the world. Those big 3 from Toyota are just perfect. I even love the simple basic outdated infotainment. No crazy tech that’s confusing and just stuff to mess with when your driving or a bunch of stuff that can go wrong and break or fail. Love the Manuel trunk, not a fan of automatic trunk doors, I find it much faster to just open and close myself and it’s just better for me. I also love the non push start. I used to have a highlander and I just love the feeling of turning the key and hearing the 4Runner engine beep and start. I love everything about these 3 trucks.

    I just bought a new TRD Sport and am very happy with it. My last truck was a big pile of Chevy (Silverado 2500 HD) and it was in the shop at least once a month for things that should have never broke to begin with. To be fair I have owned several F-150's and they were very reliable gas guzzlers. So, I guess my new Tundra is "outdated", but that's okay with me because I'm a little outdated myself. I really don't give two craps about not having a WIFI hotspot or push-button start either! I have a truck with a real transmission (no plastic/epoxy clutch) and it will last me for twenty years! Also, it only has 300 miles on it but so far I'm averaging 17.4 MPG, so that's better than expected.

    Years ago it was it's too high. it's too harsh a ride, the ride is like a truck, not enough cup holders, not enough USB ports, no cruise control, no this or that. Trucks have gone from a truck to a car with a bed. You people have cut the balls off of the pickup truck. They even have to sell aftermarket truck nuts...because of it. If you are not a truck person then don't take a truck and make it into a expensive glorified luxury car with a bed that now cost us consumers 60 - 70 thousand dollars. Real men and Real truck guys want a good honest truck. Something that's tough, reliable, that can haul things, pull things, push things, and rides and feels like a truck. Cowboys don't care about how many USB ports, or infotainment, or auto 4 wheel drive. If you need auto 4 wheel drive, you shouldn't be driving if you are that stupid and don't know how or when to use 4 wheel drive. Point that I want to say is there's a whole lot of shit added on to trucks that you honestly don't need. It makes the price of a truck these days higher then luxury cars. A 70 - 80 thousand dollars Ford diesel pickup. What the f*#k. Before a car was the expensive vehicle and the pickup was a cheap vehicle and a work vehicle. Today the work vehicle has better leather seats than a BMW. You are going to take the working mans truck and make it where the working man can't afford to buy one. Next will be auto coffee warmers in the cup holders, or suspension that lowers so I don't have to climb into the truck. A self-loading and self-empting bed. Thats why this country is in trouble too many lazy people.

    Toyota has kept it simple, Chevy, Ford, and Jeep keep adding more and more electronics that can and will mess up. They are not covered by warranty very well if at all and cost more to replace. Also if how big it is makes it hard for you to drive it that is your deal, if you can't figure out how to drive it in those situations properly.

    I just purchased my first tundra a 2016. I like the simplicity because I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars fixing new technology. I’ve had Ram, Chevy many years. The first time I took this truck on a road trip was the first time ever my back didn’t hurt, my legs didn’t go numb. This truck is my new baby. I didn’t buy it for gas mileage I bought it for reliability and comfort. My last truck was a 2013 Ram I experienced radio issues my heater core failed and leaked antifreeze in the truck. It wasn’t comfortable as I thought after I took on a road trip. We used my wife car instead. So I am sticking to the simply truck. Less to fix and break.

      At least he said "don't buy a full size rig if you don't need it". It seems a lot of people who drive their cars around the city like to attack truck owners as eco killing neanderthals with small genitalia. They complain about the high cost but fail to realize this can do everything a car can do, often with similar luxuries/options, but tows my boat, camper, gets me in the middle of nowhere, etc. I would never be without my truck...

  • @kevinstafford4475
    @kevinstafford4475 Před 5 lety +5

    Curious, when in the snow did you turn off the traction control features? The key to the Tundra, as a Tundra owner myself, is is to push and hold the TSC button while in 4WD until traction control and VSC go off. Do this and a Tundra will pretty much go anywhere. I live in a rural area of West Virginia and winters can be rough. I have never been in a situation where on level ground my Tundra couldn't get through the snow. Unless the snow is bumper deep or going up and down steep hills, my truck get through every time.
    BTW, 4 Hi is shift on the fly so WTH are you talking about and why were you stopping?????
    Finally, I commute to work on "winding, twisty" roads and it does just fine. It's not a friggin sports car. It's a truck and does what a truck should do and does it well. Hauling loads, reliable, rock solid design, etc... No it doesn't have every bell and whistle (go to the top of the line 1794 edition for that) but for folks that actually need a solid truck for "truck stuff" the Tundra is damn hard to beat.

    • @drivingsports
      @drivingsports  Před 5 lety +1

      Our handling comments are regarding how much worse the Tundra does on roads when compared directly to its newer completion.
      In the snow, we tried all the usual tricks. Not worth documenting since they all failed. It was unusually wet and slick stuff. Probably would have trapped anything without snow tires. (As noted in the video)

    All that you said is fair and reasonable. I preach pretty much the same philosophy about vehicles. There are a LOT of choices that will fit a LOT of different drivers. (Fortunately) Cannot expect a truck of this magnitude to do the same things that the luxury truck daily driver does. This truck is meant to be a work horse with some off road prowess. Toyota lovers maintain they would like to see some updates to some things, however, when it comes down to reliability and functionality, what works should not be removed for what is not proven. And that is where the fan base is at. Fanatics like to whine about the little details that are not there, but love the fact that the vehicle(s) continue on where rivals are going into repair shops. You mentioned this truck being #4 on the top selling list. You then did mention the #1 and #2 spot. However, I would like to know what the #3 is. lol Good review. Too bad about the snow being un passable with those stock tires not being proper for the weather out of the factory. But one cannot hold that failure against the truck itself. Just the choice in tires that are used on the TRD lines. My 2018 TRD Off Road 4Runner comes with adequate tires for most of the conditions I encounter. However, KO2's would have been WAY better for a stock tire on a TRD series vehicle. I did not buy this vehicle for a Sunday drive with the kids on a paved highway. I bought it to go where the pavement ends and the weather is less than favorable. And manufacturers should be choosing tires to do the job that the vehicle is meant to do from the get go.

    Switching to 4h from 2 whd isn't that bad. you only have to stop when switching to 4low. this review is making this truck sound like crap. I have one and it is an amazing truck. I live in the mtns where snow is a common thing and it is a very good truck for this driving. Not having all of the touch screens, newest gauges etc isn't always a bad thing. less things to go wrong. This guy is a horrible reviewer.

    It is dependable, but that doesn't make it the best. I have a 2008 and it's been great. But unless they keep the dependability, add a few gears to the trans, improve MPG and maybe kick up towing a bit, I'll be looking elsewhere. I see no reason to buy basically the same truck as I have now, for $50K. The fact we continue to praise Toyota for keeping the same darn truck for over 10 years, is why Toyota doesn't improve anything. They don't have to improve anything! We keep on buying it and praising them for keeping the same truck for over 10 years and selling it to us. Not me. Either greatly reduce the price of an old tech truck, or greatly improve it. A Briggs n Stratton engine is dependable, but I have no interest in one simply because it's dependable. Especially when it cost me nearly $50K.

      @chrisgleeton6823 Před 5 lety

      yeah, the Tundra is no bigger than a Ram or an F-150 or Silverado. If you can daily and park one of those, you can Daily and park a Tundra. Of course, you gotta be a truck person to do so...it's just a lifestyle.

  • @rangerover06sc
    @rangerover06sc Před 5 lety

    Honestly, the only reason they tundra doesn't have an awd setting is simply because Toyota simply decided not to give it one. It's not because of durability, not unless anyone wants to suggest the 4wd system from the Land Cruiser isn't durable. And it's not being the the truck is old. Not only could Toyota have given the tundra an awd setting, they could have given it an an awd setting that would have been better and more durable than everyone else's. All they would have to do is take the 4wd system with the torsen center diff from the Sequoia. But they just didn't.

    Should of had a plow on it. My Tundra pushes my 7'6" Fisher like a beast.
    And yes, old school is DA BEST SCHOOL, because at the end of the day my 13 year old Tundra with almost 200K miles will still start and drive and plow my driveway just as good when it hits 300K miles. Even though I do really want a new TRD, it's still the same truck as my 07 (witch ain't a bad thing). That also makes me think that's one of the reasons Tundras and Toyotas in general don't sell as high is because there owners love them and want to see how far they'll go before they die. Fords and Chevys sell alot because they die alot. I know I'm looking to get at least another 100,000 miles out of my Yota.

    A man's truck. Not a push-button wimpy vehicle with all of the creature comforts. It is still "soft" by my standards. Trucks should have the option for a manual transmission and a physical throw lever to engage in 4WD. Manual roll down windows would be nice as well.

    I owned a 2005 Tundra for 13 years. It sounds like this has very limited updates from that truck. I'm currently driving a Ford F150 and I like several things about the Ford more. It handles and parks easier, the gas mileage is superior, the electronics package is much nicer, and the 4x4 system is nicer and much more advanced. I just wished it had Toyota's quality and longevity. There is little chance I'll get 175,000 miles and 13 years with this Ford. But the years I do get will be more enjoyable.

      @@blackfreethinker7480 The Ford isn't broken down, but it will likely require more maintenance to last as long. The big mystery is why are the Toyota's lacking in features? Sure, some of the features of my Ford would be considered too cutting edge/unproven for Toyota to offer. But the dated feel of the Toyota interior is just laziness and/or cheapness on their part.

    "While Americans can’t seem to get enough of the mid-size pickups from Japanese automakers, they absolutely shun their full-size trucks. According to data from WardsIntelligence, the highest market share Toyota has seen with Tundra was 9.1% and that was in 2007. It currently hovers in the 5% range. It’s even worse for Nissan. The best the Titan was able to muster was 3.5% of the market in 2005. Today it’s at 1.5%. With the Detroit Three commanding 94% of full-size pickup sales this year, it might almost make more sense for Toyota and Nissan to share a large truck platform." Autoline
