President Raisi Death Exposes Dangers of Iran's Aging Aircraft

  • The helicopter crash that killed Iran President Ebrahim Raisi is the latest reminder of the poor state of many aircraft operating in the Islamic Republic after almost half a century of US sanctions.
    Iran has been largely barred from purchasing new aircraft or aircraft components from US or European suppliers since the revolution of 1979, leaving both military and civilian operators cut off from heavyweights Boeing Co. and Airbus SE and reliant on patched-up vehicles from earlier eras.

    • @flagmichael
      @flagmichael Před 3 dny +1

      I'm an idiot who worked in aviation for 14 years; the only explanation that makes sense is that the pilot became spatially disoriented in fog. Fixed wing planes are very forgiving of that; make the pitch trim holds altitude and the aileron trim holds the wings level and the heading reasonably steady. Try to do that very long in a helicopter and you become like Kobe Bryant's last pilot: the copter leans one direction or another and falls off the balance.
      The FAA reports, "Statistics show that between 5 to 10% of all general aviation accidents can be attributed to spatial disorientation, 90% of which are fatal. Spatial orientation in flight is difficult to achieve because numerous sensory stimuli (visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive) vary in magnitude, direction, and frequency."
      So - do you want to correct your idiotic comment?

    Excuses excuses. The US uses some of the oldest aircraft in the world. The B-52 is going to be in service past 100 years. UPS and FedEx both fly the A300 in fact it’s the workhorse of their fleets. It’s not the us fault Iran doesn’t maintain their aircraft or that they chose to fly a helicopter which isn’t IFR certified in mountainous terrain in the fog. Even the us President doesn’t fly in modern aircraft Air Force one is still a 747-200 model while marine one is a very old seaking. You can’t blame American for this when all of americas aircraft’s in service are ancient as well.

      Bell 212s can be upgraded for an IFR configuration. Whether this particular 212 was upgraded is the question. As a retired helicopter pilot, I know that the pilot in command (PIC) is responsible to conduct a course reversal and or land when encountering conditions outside of Visual Flight Rules (VFR) if the helicopter is not equipped with the appropriate IFR configuration, or the pilots are not certified to fly in IFR conditions. IFR flights would require 2 pilots on board; Captain and first officer.

Although it is true that they must main visual reference of terrain upon landing, IFR equipped helicopters with IFR trained pilots typically maintain an altitude of 1,000ft or greater above ground level (AGL) while in cruise flight. Kobe could have had a reckless pilot. IFR trained pilots have been known to make mistakes too. Cheers

      @Jenkmode89 Před 12 dny

      @@matttartal7637 lmao flying at 1000 feet is not ifr. You have to be above the clouds in order to be ifr. Ifr is where you are above the clouds and can no longer see the ground. As a fixed wing pilot if you’re not instrument rated you can not go above the clouds and must maintain vfr. Helicopters can’t land if they can’t see outside a plane can still land no matter the weather if they are cat certified. Flying a helicopter in the fog in mountainous terrain is very irresponsible. If helicopters are capable of ifr why wouldn’t they get above the fog and fly true ifr?

    What are you talking about sanctions? They can build sophisticated missiles to send to terrorist groups to fight Israel, they build sophisticated drones to kill Ukrainians via Russia, they spend trillions of dollars on Hamas, Hezbollah, Ansa Allah terrorist groups, and run a nuclear programme of trillions of dollars, and they could repair their presidential aircraft? Iran do 25years oil business with China, who builds all sort of sophisticated helicopters and China couldn't supply Iran with just one sophisticated helicopter for Iranian president? Russia and Iran do good business, and Russia couldn't supply Iran with a super sophisticated helicopter for their president? What has 50 years sanction has to do with this? Iran is supposed to have the best Aircrafts from China and Russia with no cost.

    OK...let me see if I understand this as a result of US sanctions to sell parts and new choppers to Iran ....no other countries namely Iran allies...don't make helicopters and given their relationship with the western world...why wud they want aircrafts or vehicles from the US for their president....I am confused is the weather, age/ performance of the helicopter cause the crash...how come the other two choppers made it through the same fog...why did this pilot asked the other pilots to fly above the fog ...and he didn't....no mission impossible here!!!!
