I don’t live in London, but when I visit I can keep my kids entertained in London all day without spending very much money. They say it’s expensive to visit there, but there are lots of open air landmarks, like Tower Bridge or the Elizabeth Tower and absolutely loads of big museums and art galleries, most of which are free to enter. I took my daughter many years ago and we most,y spent the day walking around looking at famous landmarks, like the cenotaph, the gates to Downing Street, and Trafalgar Square which didn’t cost a penny, listened to some brilliant street musicians and finished the day at the gates of Buckingham Palace and watched the guards.
I took my youngest son 7 months ago. We got the tube to Embankment, took photos of the Houses Of Parliament from Hungerford Footbridge, went to Trafalgar Square and photographed Nelson’s Column and the various sculptures there, got back on the tube and spent the morning in The British Museum and saw, amongst other things, the Sutton Hoo artefacts, the famous Lewis Chess Men and the Egyptian mummies. We ate a packed lunch in a nice park and then spent the afternoon at the Imperial War museum. We ended the day with McDonalds, which costs the same wherever you go and was the only thing we spent money on apart from our tube tickets. And everywhere we walked there was a building, blue plaque or statue that prompted a conversation or an opportunity for me to tell my son about the history of the place. Very fun, very cheap day out.
However, I would never want to live there. I get the urge to visit once or twice a decade. Once it’s out of my system air won’t go again for ages. The tube is cramped and uncomfortable, the traffic is too congested, nobody will smile at you and pass the time of day. I’ve had some dirty looks when I try to make small talk on the tube. The air doesn’t smell clean. When I get back home my throat is sore from the traffic fumes, my hair smells really dirty and when I blue my nose my snot comes out black when I’ve breathed in polluted air. I don’t get these problems in my own town.

You have to remember that the UK is further north than some places in Canada, so the winter months are short and that we are next to the Atlantic coast so we get clouds and rain because of that. I've lived in London since 1973, if you are looking for things to do you can probably find it. If you don't like crowed places you bet you are going to find those. Transport is good, but during rush hours you will definitely find crowding. For days out of London there are loads of places to go and see and get away from the crowds.Like New Your, the cost of things is higher than elsewhere. A plus over many cities is that there are lots of green spaces, parks and on nice days they are great to visit, slow down from the hustle and bustle of the streets, to go people watch, and to "touch grass" as I hear people say. I'm 71 now, I wouldn't move to London now, but when I was in my 20s & 30s it seemed like a magical place to be.

Britain, including London of course, can have lovely weather, I'm 60 years of age, born in Nottingham and lived here all my life and I can remember many glorious summers. We have four seasons, unlike many countries, and we're in the North Atlantic so we get our fair share of storms, rain and sometimes snow in the winter, but in my humble opinion all four seasons have a beauty about them.

  • @TallysVids

I live in the UK (in Cumbria around 300 miles from London). Me and my partner go to London twice a year. Once for a week during the summer and also in November to see the Christmas markets and to do some Christmas shopping as London has some fantastic shops and markets. London in the summer can get very hot (probably not as hot as some places in the world) but we were down a couple of summers ago the temperatures were between 30-35C for the week we were down in July. Weird as it sounds I love travelling around on the Tube/Underground, as I find it a marvellous feat of engineering and you can get to places amazingly quickly on them as they run very frequently (some of the lines trains are every minute).
I would encourage anyone coming to London to use the Tube to get around, as the buses in central London spend loads of time stuck in traffic and take a lot longer to get somewhere compared to the Tube. One thing I do hate about the Tube (during the summer) is how hot they are (a lot of the trains/stations don't have air conditioning) so in rush hour its like travelling around in a mobile sauna 🥵

Rain is very bearable in this part of the UK & comes very fairly. People's attitude towards weather in other countries is very different to how we see things in the UK. In Australia, people still go to the beach even when it's chucking it down at some points in the day. When visitors think of London they think of the centre, the hustle and bustle, people everywhere, noise etc. I've lived in London for over 40 years, 12 miles from the centre, about 3 miles from the open countryside. It's quiet here like a small town. In fact that's what the outer suburbs are like - a series of small towns that just happen to be next to each other. I go into what tourists think of as London occasionally but most of what we need is around here. We have all the advantages of having central London on the doorstep, theatres, major events, transport links etc plus all the advantages of living in a small town close to the countryside.

And yes... the weather is gloomy 90% of time. Not foggy as the old myth... just cloudy or damp 90% of the year. The other 10% will be literately beautiful weather.
Crime: It's technically actually gone down if we go by ALL of London's history... London a century+ ago was really bad, it's why the first police on the planet were created here. Social media and communication has increased the awareness of it and there has been a small boom as London's population grew over the last decade. If your are a fairly savvy person, you will likely never see it with your own eyes. It also depends on where in London you go. Touristy places will have larger pickpocket crime for example.

Comparing cities is like comparing apples and oranges. Chuck in comparing metropolises too, and you've got the whole fruit bowl!!.
I've worked in London and I can tell you it was great. Would I live there? Nope. Way way too expensive.
I live in Cardiff (Wales' capital) it's not even half the size of London, and it can get hectic at rush hour. Imagine rush hour in London! I'm surprised anyone gets home ;)
Wrt the weather. Yeah. We get a fcuk ton of rain, but then again, it wouldn't be a 'Green and pleasant land' without it ;)
We've recently had what seems to be 3 months of shite weather.... 95% rain... but hey! Spring is here!! So far it's now 60% rain lol. Summer time will probably be a drought..... ;)
Last year I took a nap ... and slept through summer.. :(
London is expensive no doubt but then as far as I recall, ALL metropolises (that I've been to over the years) are expensive.
London is definitely a cosmopolitan city. You can talk to people from literally anywhere in the World there (if you can get them to slow down and actually talk). It's an incredibly busy, vibrant, densely populated gaff for sure. Fun though ;)
Wrt crime. Yeah there's crime. From the organised stuff to the street scammers. If you keep your eyes wide open, use common sense you'll be just 🙂
You've often said you have a little trepidation about driving in the UK. Sure, makes perfect sense. But, once you've had a bit of time on the roads (please do read the Highway code, or even, try the online theory test) you'll be fine... EXCEPT - don't drive in London!!!. I'm nearly 60. Driven for over 40 years (in very many countries over the world) but even I don't try to drive in London!! Unless you have the local knowledge you're literally up schitz creek ;)
Very many cities have the 'visiting bits', all beautiful, interesting, fun and 'sexy'. But scratch around the edges and you'll find deprived areas (and everything that goes with it). That's just part of living in the current 'world climate' just now..
Oh BTW. The streets aren't 'paved with gold'... but, they are rich in culture (ours and others). Oh... did I mention it's big? If you intend to visit the sites... you'll need about 10 days (an oyster card and loads of cash...) Enjoy!! :)

I'm a Londoner, and I'll add this but this isn't an isolated issue - you can often have to go to work with weather than feels like mid-Autumn, and you end up coming home at the end of the day drenched in sweat. Several seasons in a day... People can attest to how RANDOM the weather has been this April. So I've grown up packing a mini umbrella regardless of the month, because you never know.

London is basically New York with different accents, the diversity and characters are exactly the same. I was born and lived in London for 50 years in both nice areas and places you wouldn't leave your car overnight. What people say about great to visit but don't live here is right, public transport is dire and ludicrously overpriced, the crime rate is bad but linked to the huge social divide that government has created and don't even bother trying to see a doctor unless you pay to go private!
What I love is that if I need to get something from a store at 3am, there's always something open. Also if you're a fan of just completely mental things happening randomly, you'll see plenty of that on a daily basis... Never a dull moment!

As a UK and London citizen, I think one of the best areas of the UK is Cornwall. It's been 40 years since I've been there, but have great memories of my long weekend there. The beaches are sandy with caves and during the summer it's like the Mediterranean. And when you stand at Lands End, on a bright sunny day, you get a great view of the Atlantic. As for the city of London, it's great going down the back streets, as you get to see much more of the older buildings. And a walk along the River Thames is a must for any visitor.

Regarding it being gloomy, its a matter of perceptions because the UK is quite far north. In summer you get glorious long, long days when its often sunny as well, but in winter you get short days and long nights, and winter storms, and if you are working it's dark when you start your journey to work, and it's dark when you come home. Interesting factoid: half the population of Canada lives further south than the southernmost part of the UK.

I'm from a famously beautiful rural area of Northern England, but I've lived in London for about 15 years. I've also lived in Bristol, Bath, Edinburgh and Manchester. I honestly LOVE London, it's an amazing city and there are few other places I'd want to live, especially in the UK. After all this time, I've yet to even come close to running out of places to go, things to do and people to meet. I love the multiculturalism, and really miss that when I'm away, it's a big part of the character of the place.
The two major negatives though are (A) how incredibly hectic it can get, and (B) the shocking cost of accommodation, both for residents and for visitors. The former is something you just need to get used to, you learn to kind of ride it like a wave and develop strategies for avoiding the worst of it. The latter though is genuinely very frustrating and I'd like to see something done about it.

The months in the UK from May to September are mild and sometimes very sunny. From October to April expact rain, some frost, wind and clouds most of the time. The southeast of the island has the most sun and the least rain. Paris actually gets more rain per year than London. In Britain, the weather also gets slightly milder, cloudier and rainier as you go from east to west.

The weather is dull, but rarely ever extreme in any way. It's usually just grey skies, and about 60-ish Fahrenheit. April to September. With two or three weeks when it can get to 80 Fahrenheit. rare that it goes above 90. It rains regularly, but it's usually light. London gets less rain than the western and northern parts of the island. The Scottish Highlands, where I live, gets the most rain. It rains about 120 inches per year on average, in the Highlands. London gets about 23 inches of rain in the same period.

When you come to the U.K. come in June .. children are in school (less people about) and the weather is 90% great .. beautiful sunny days with flowers everywhere. From London you can visit the rest of the country by train or coach and each city will have bus service everywhere .. no where is hours to get to .. unless you visit Scotland via train or by road. London might have the cheapest tickets but everything else will be expensive .. so pay extra to fly in elsewhere and visit London. Wait until any little ones are about 8 years old or around there so they walk everywhere if they're coming with you and remember the trip. Also once you're in London you can easily visit other places in Europe .. perhaps fly back from there it might be cheaper. I'm about to do a long weekend in London with my cousins .. doing the tourist thing .. Tower of London, Ripper Tour, a Show may a market on the Sunday, trip down the River, London Eye etc etc. Live here so no expensive flight to pay for. Interestingly we always holiday in Europe .. Spanish Islands or Greek Islands. We go for the definite sunshine haha.

It's diverse and easy to travel elsewhere. There's also lots of free things to do. I love London. I've lived here for 50 years. Travelled extensively and still believe it's one of the best cities in the world. London has seasons. We even have water shortages! It actually rains more in Paris.

You have pretty much echoed what I was going to say. I've lived here 16 years since moving from another European country where I was raised and worked for 38 years. I am British however. At first, I struggled but that was because I was establishing myself and trying to build a network of people to get to know. NoW, I absolutely love it here and I never thought I would prefer life here to where I had lived my entire life beforehand. I live in London Zone 3. In my neighbourhood you can get on a bus, tube or train and be in the centre within 14 minutes, eat any kind of food day or night, go to museum ( normally free entry), walk along the river, spend time in one of four huge green parks and commons with woodlands, a Lido, cafes etc, get to know neighbours and locals from all walks of life and all cultures. When I get off the train to head back down my street from work, I can hear the birdsong and see the wildlife around me in the park and yet I've got all of life going on just as close, near my house. People talk to me, I get to know people and there are so many ways to be part of the community and benefit others less fortunate, or learn a new skill and interest. I never had that where I grew up in Belgium even though I wish I had. I love London, its beauty and its gritty parts in equal measure. It's never failed to make me feel part of something bigger than myself.

I'd then head on over to somewhere like York, Chester, (both amazingly beautiful cities), Bath, Bristol, Brighton (an interesting seaside resort close to London), maybe day trips to Oxford or Cambridge.
If you want the countryside, traveling through the border country between Wales and England is great, as is the Northumbrian coast with an excursion along Hadrian's wall, or the coastal paths around Pembrokshire in Wales, or Cornwall.

Crime has gone up in the last 20 years (mostly gang related) and the culture is changing due to immigration to the point that some areas are unrecognisable. It definitely is overcrowded and quality of life is going down but i hear everyone say that about every country. Regardless, you will not find a capital city that has such a rich culture and history as London. I would say to avoid central London if you dont like crowds or tourists 😂 other than that, i truly believe London is the best city in the world and has some of the most beautiful and historical architecture.

I think that London is one of the driest places in the UK as it's also in one of the driest regions of the UK - the southeast of England. In fact, in terms of the ratio between population and availability of fresh water, it's high up in the global league of places most susceptible to drought. By the way, the Joiners Arms, right on the south bank of the Thames, by Blackfriars station, has a glorious waterside patio with views across the river to St Paul's Cathedral and the tower blocks of the City of London.

London is SO different from the rest of the UK. I'm from there but live in Sussex now. The culture shock was enormous when I moved away. I assume the same goes in the other direction. Most visitors, even from outside the UK, do not see 'the real' London.
I think a lot of people are fed up with how the money and power seems to flow towards London, same as how people in the US resent NY and DC. But it's not to be missed when you visit the UK, just ensure you see some of the rest of the country as well. London is astonishing but it's a poor representation of England and even poorer representation of the UK as a whole.

But to someone from Florida, it's definitely gloomy and freezing cold almost all of the time. Certainly my most preferred - no let's say 'least hated' European city. I do love the weather - it never really gets cold and outside of office hours it's shorts and T-shirt all year round - we've been having something of a heat wave for the last two years and the last time it really got cold was 2018 when the 'Beast from the East' passed through and left a sprinkling of snow. What I hate is the people - lockdown was a blessed relief - sunny uplands with empty streets and no-one pestering you to go out or go to bars or restaurants - a little piece of heaven.

The trouble with London is that as in much of the UK the weather can be quite changeable, and this catches people off guard, especially tourists. It does also get depressingly overcast in the winter - basically grey, damp-ish misery for weeks on end...

I’ve known London very well (35yrs living here but grew up in Devon & the West Country prior to that). Wether ppl like it or not unfortunately IMO London is losing soul, the thing that made it unique. It’s mojo & attitude is more like a limp biscuit thrown to the gutter.
