    I sort of get the negative reactions about "low" megapixels. I used to shoot the D810 with 36 mpx, and then I got the Z8 with 45 mpx. And I must say, the extra 9 mpx do come in handy when doing bird photography. At least when shooting smaller birds, since you can crop more before showing. But yeah, it comes down to your needs as a photographer. I agree with you, most likely 90% doesnt need more then 26 mpx. Another aspect of it is that I think people in general associate high amount of megapixels with better technology, and hence think it is strange that Canon would opt for "only" 26 mpx. Great video!

      @cameratool Před měsícem

      6000x4000 displayed on a 5120x2160 monitor doesn't allow for much cropping. Good luck framing birds in flight..

    • @torbjornwiken
      @torbjornwiken Před měsícem

      @@cameratoolThe amount of mpx doesnt corelate to the size of the frame you get shooting. My old D810 with 36 mpx have the same sized-frame/ view as the Z8. The game changer is the new AF that makes it way easier to follow a bird in flight. And I would assume the R1 will get a decent AF system capable of tracking birds in flight well. Howvere the reach of a smaller mpx camera will be worse since you are more limited when it comes to post editing and crooping. That isnt always relevant, but if the subject is small it may be. I often shoot smaller birds with a 600 mm lens with a 1.4 TC (giving 840 mm reach). And I want to fill the frame as much as possible, and then the extra mpx do come in handy :)

      @@Vahagraphy ??? What? Did you really just say that? Yeah, when you crop you reduce the total pixels in the final image. If you do the same thing to a 24mp image, it might become an effective 12mp image. If you're shooting for videos that will be viewed on a phone or even a magazine, you can get by with that. But not if you're making larger prints.

    I used a D3s (sports) until I got my Z9. Nobody complained about megapixels. I still think Nikon will have a Z9h at some point. But I'm happy with the Z9. Nobody complains about too many megapixels, I never had any complaints of half a stop more noise with a 45 megapixels. Even if there's some noise Nikon files clean up nice in post. But it's great to have a camera that can do sports and landscape. I may not even bother with a Z9h.

    @skyscraperfan Před měsícem +3

    I still use a 1D X, which came out more than 12 years ago and it still does the job pretty well. I do not make any money from my photos. So that camera was a major expense. If I ever buy a new one, it has to be so much better that the difference is visible in a good portion of my photos.
    There are a lot of downsides of having more megapixels. For example more megapixels limit you to a wider f-stop because of diffraction. But if you use a lens wider open, you lose depth of field. So less of your image will be in focus. If something is not in focus though, all those additional megapixels are wasted. 24 megapixels are a good compromise. More megapixels limit the dynamic range and blow up your file sizes.
    I actually love that the R1 will be like an R3 with most issues improved that had to be improved. For example getting to CFExpress card slots and a full HDMI port. The viewfinder will probably be the best we ever saw at any camera, although I still prefer optical viewfinders. And if high ISO noise really is one stop better than at the R3 without any software tricks, that is huge. In the last ten years or so we saw less than one stop of improvement. So being one stop better than a camera from 2021 would be phenomenal.

    • @Vahagraphy

      @@Vahagraphy I was offered a used 1D X Mark III for 1500 Euros, but as a already had a camera, I declined. The Mark III has a much better noise performance at low light.
      A few years ago I had to get the main board of my 1D X replaced and the costs were over 600 Euros. The main board sadly is a known weakness. One guy even had to get it replaced twice in the lifetime of his 1D X.
      I still do not get warm with electronic viewfinders. The constant adjustment of the screen brightness for example drives me nuts. I do not need any of the advantages of mirrorless cameras. So I wish they would still offer new DSLRs.

    I don't really believe R1 has only 24MP as they already do that with R3 and they position R1 to be best of everything so it's not the product that do the same purpose as R3. I don't believe it has so many pixel either but it has to be on any point they considered a sweet spot at more than 24MP in order to claim it as the best all round and not just the best for fast shooter which they already have R3 and the future R3 Mark II for that. I think it should be around 30-36MP like when the first rumour came out but definitely should not have as many pixels as the R5 lineup which has been make for different kind of purpose. This is only considering from marketing point of view, I don't think it will be make sense in term of marketing if R1 only has 24MP or has as many as 45MP or beyond that.
    On the other hand, I never see 24MP as too little, in fact I think even camera around 6-10MP is enough for most things already and I didn't see the point of using digital camera beyond 20MP in the first place. 6MP Nikon D100 or Canon 10D is still enough for A3+ without visible lose in quality. And any camera that has more than 20MP already resolved more details than most 35mm film stocks when scanned to produce comparable image resolution with high end film scanner like Imacon (maybe drum scanning might resolve a bit more details from the film bit I don't think that's by much and I will never have a chance to try that out in order to know). If that's not enough then I don't know what is enough when talking about megapixel. Maybe cropping is what make this high resolution have meaning but if the cropped image still have more than 4MP left I still think it's still usable in many case.

    I'm currently a Canon Shooter, for nearly 40 years was a Nikon shooter. As for the new cameras, we will find out what is when we find out what it is. The rumors are entertainment and always fun to speculate but truth is, when the company makes the formal announcement we will know what it is. When the embargo is lifted we will know other's opinions of it. After it gets out in the wild, we will actually see it and if friends own it we can mess around with their camera. I seriously doubt if I'm in the target market for the R1 any more than I was in the target market for the A1 or the Z9. I'm more of a prosumer (I hate that word by the way) kind of shooter. R7, R5, A7iv A6700, D500 kind of shooter.
    so, anyone getting upset about this or all anxious about it really needs to take a deep breath, slow down, and just wait. The breathless rumor videos should be seen as entertainment value and the folks presenting the rumors are entertainers. They may not see themselves that way, but stating rumor as presumed fact is nothing more than entertainment and speculation. Just my thoughts on the topic.
    I don't want to go down the megapixel rabbit hole. I will say as a wildlife photographer, there are times when we simply cannot get closer to the creature. Examples are skittish critter, keeping respectful distance, critter is not going to stick around long, fragile environment and "no off trail" rules in the public lands where many of us shoot. Cropping becomes necessary. Having more than 24mpx gives us the option for tighter cropping and having options are always good. Again, I'm not in the target market for this model so no big dog in this hunt.

    • @Vahagraphy
      @Vahagraphy  Před měsícem +1

      and when Canon sings,, we will see who had the right lyrics and who had lyrics to the song hocus pocus. lol yes those little birds and animals. cropping is idea. but see you have the R7, which is good, not sure if you use an R5 but you have the option for an R5 if you so do choose. R7 APS crop , like Amar says all the time,,, where is my Z500 lol

      @JeffandLeslie Před měsícem

      @@Vahagraphy indeed. Yes, I’m probably more the target market for the R5 series than the R1 or R3 market. Hopefully an R7ii will come along with a faster readout sensor. As it is, the mechanical shutter works for fast moving subjects. I may be in the minority but I like the form factor of the R7. As for the varying speculations, if one throws enough spaghetti at the wall, some of it will eventually stick. :)

  • @carlmcneill1139
    @carlmcneill1139 Před měsícem +1

    The R1 is not for the average photographer. It's a niche camera and is designed for a specific task. The people that will be buying it have the long lenses to reach the subject without cropping. Look at all your sporting events. They have lenses that can reach most spots on the field without doing much cropping. I'd say that most of the cropping done is to get a good composition. Even most of the wildlife photographers have the lenses they need to get the shots they need. I have the z8 and the 180-600mm lens and there have been times I've had to crop because what I was shooting was so far away and there was no way to get closer. But even if you crop heavily, lenses have focus distance limit. There's a lot of things in the atmosphere that will distort images or keep them from being sharp. So what's the point of cropping in if they're out of focus due to lens limitations or atmospheric conditions? I think the high resolution is being pushed by fan boys who want bragging rights. I don't care if another brand makes better fear than mine as long as mine does what I need it to do and I'm getting the photos I want.

    • @Vahagraphy
      @Vahagraphy  Před měsícem +1

      BUT BUT BUT Jared says never to crop? lol So you would classify the R5 as the all arounder right? R5 and R6. BTW if the R1 is 24mp is that a good reason if rumors hold up. if you are an R3 user, would you upgrade?

    • @carlmcneill1139
      @carlmcneill1139 Před měsícem

      @Vahagraphy I think the R6 and R5 are good solid all arounders for the megapixel size the same way the z6 and z8 are for theirs. If I was a Canon shooter I'd be happy with either. If I had the R3i wouldn't get the R1 unless I needed it for business reasons. It would have to do things the R3 doesn't do that I would need. I bought the z8 because I wanted. I don't need the z9. I have 99% of everything the z9 does and it was cheaper. 24 mp makes sense for what this camera is going to do. We always think of high dynamic range and better ISO performance when it comes to raw files but these camera will probably be used more for jpg for sports shooters. They have to upload photos on site at the games as the games are happening. You need the best jpg file you can get. I tried my z8 at a college baseball game on jpg at 30 fps just to see what I'd get. They came out really good. Sure you can get better photos in raw but the jpg were good enough. It's tough catching the call right on the bat.

    Hello Vahagraphy, It dose seem so strang to how long it has taken Canon to come out with there EOS R1, but as you rightly say what is wrong with the R3 or any of there other cameras. The thing that would of been bad is if they realised the R1 before it was ready, (Hasselblad X1D, there first firmware was not to good, Yes they did all the fixes and more, but). I used to Run R&D department at a softwere company and I use to get all the nuw tech. and spent time developing products, Now I am happy leaning what older kit can do. Saying that while shooting Z8, Z9 and X2D all with new lenses, but I am not looking to up date any of the bodies I have now I just think they are amazing. Yes there are about two lenses that I may get. I think swapping cameras ever year is not going to be cost effective nor do you have time to get to know all the ins and out of your kit. There are far too many spec sheet voyeurs and too few that use the cameras in the real world. I'm a serious amateur that has sold some images and a few large events for paying customers and I have never been asked about what camera I had or the megapixels in my images. I have a Nikon Z7 and a Canon EOS R and I don''t see myself getting a new camera anytime soon.I still use my Hasselblad 500C and 503CX and they still help me make some outstanding images. If you really need a ton of pixels get yourself a FujiFilm GFX100 SII

    I don't know anything about the rumors but, Canon seems to be focusing on these super high speed cameras made for sports/action/wildlife. I would rather Canon focus on something for the rest of us. That said, Canon is too expensive for me anyway. My choices are almost always between Nikon and Sony due to cost.

    The only reason I am thinking that I will buy R1 is that if it will be so capable in photo and video I can sell everything what I have (cinema camera, still camera) and operating just R1 for both world. But that`s why I am waiting for official specs by Canon and some test on YT. If it will perform how I expected I will borrow one peace and if it give me what I want from still and video camera, I will buy it. Currently I have Canon EOS R and Canon C70. Question is if Canon R1 is able to beat C70 in video (I think yes because of rumored Fullframe super fast read-out speed 2ms vs 15, stacked DGO sensor and 6K RAW instead of 4K..... HAHA! I am looking foreward as a boy. 24MPx is enough for me, but if Canon put 30MPx sensor to R1 I will be more happy.

      @Vahagraphy  Před měsícem +1

      ahhh nice. A C70 user. I've always loved that camera and thought of that type camera for Nikon too. No one listened. well maybe they did finally now that they biught RED. Good luck with the new R1 whenever it comes out and hope it works out for your needs. That's all that counts.

      @@Vahagraphy thank you :) also Nikon after RED acquisition will be a monster for video for sure. RED Komodo is a gold camera for filmmakers. Nikon will implement some video features to mirrorless cameras for sure and RED switch from RF to Z-Mount in the future (I think there exist some conctract with Canon)

    Shooting a wedding is WAY different than shooting a celebrity... you want more than 24mp for cropping and just in general, if the rumors are true this is embarrassing for Canon.

    I’ll say this. There are so many R cameras. It’s confusing. Then there’s the lens issue. R lenses. No I’ll not buy a 5 k camera. I’m not a professional, but not an amateur. I think I should focus on being a better photographer rather than having the BMW of cameras. It’s senseless and a waste of money. IMO.

    Oh no, I thought the megapixel wars were over ? 45 MP is way out of line. Working with 24MP is a pain in the ass already. For me a 24 MP camera for bird shots that I'm gonna crop but for everything else 12 and 16 MP is just fine. My go to cameras are a 12MP Nikon D300 and a 16 MP Pentax K5. So in a way, high MP cameras are really for the birds. The best thing about a new camera coming out is that there will be a lot more good used gear coming out on the market. The only thing I ever buy new are SD cards.

    • @Vahagraphy
      @Vahagraphy  Před měsícem +1

      hahah SD cards. really. thats cool. I buy bodies and lenses used all the time. I figure let someone else pay the taxes and depreciation. lol sometimes bodies are a good idea buying new. warranty and piece of mind.
