1965. Quintessential mid-60's pop. To me this song marks the point at when The Beatles figured out how they could take the music beyond what they learned from The Everly Brothers with three voice harmonies instead of two. And the sound of this song was what The Monkees aimed for the year after and the year after that. PS. Oh you have such cute cheeks!!! (grin)
Definitely an underrated song but one of my favorites from the Help! album.... an album that shows the the early evolution and maturing of the Beatles' songwriting. So glad you loved it.
I remember the thrill as a kid, I watched the Beatles sing this great song on the BIG screen in the movie "Help" We would take our pretty little girlfriends to the movies on a Saturday and
I think part of the fun was imagining that you were brave enough to say these words of love to our girlfriends (probably about 13 or 14 years of age) Those were some fun times. : )

1965 saw Paul compose 4 thinly disguised message songs to his then girlfriend, actress Jane Asher. Her pursuit of her successful and touring acting career was much to the chagrin of her Beatle boyfriend. The Night Before was the 1st song. Followed by You Won't See Me, I'm Looking Through You and We Can Work It Out. May I say Cim, you my dear are sweeter than honey too :-) RNB

Isn’t it great to see a great Beatles song, albeit one possibly considered something of a ‘sleeper’, reach across all these decades, generations, even, may I venture, cultures, possibly even language to some extent, to draw a such a familiar and recognizable reaction like this? The Beatles had been working marathon hours and I think this was towards the end of a very late session so they were dead tired.. 3 in the morning or something crazy when they recorded this take. Those guys worked like crazy. All night sessions at times.
And this was at a time when their recording studios weren't happy about all-night sessions - those were rare, and pretty much only the Beatles had that power to accomplish because of the huge revenue they brought in. Soon, they'd want and get even more, and their studio was just fine with it.

You know there's a funny thing Cindy there was another song they recorded out at that Stonehenge well it wasn't really a recording they just filmed it in the play the song but it was as if they recorded it but it's a song called I need you and it's so interesting because they use volume pedal on the guitars either that or they use the volume on their guitar but I think they use volume pedals see you don't hear the strumming of the guitar it's really awesome I mean they're so Innovative way back then

You can see them performing this in their movie "HELP" performing it on cold windy Salisbury Plain near Stonehenge surrounded by army tanks. Paul is wearing a gorgeous beige suit with a beige turtle neck sweater and beige suede Beatle boots....sigh...fabulous

Great Paul song from the Help Lp. The Beatles always were right on point with their backing vocals. John and George's little " On the night before" harmonies are perfect. This band knew when and how to drop backing vocals like no one else, it was a big part of their sound. These guys were and still are unparalleled with this stuff. Great vocals and lyrics by Paul too. A very catchy song and when this LP was released in August 1965 I was seven years old and this was my favorite song on the Lp. So damn catchy ! Please check out John's "It's Only Love" from Help, it's one of those little golden gems that they just threw on side two of the Lp. John despised the song, it was just throw away crap as he put it but I've always loved it. A majority of the songs that you react too were just fillers to put on the record, not meant to be hits or singles and they're great songs. Look at "Yesterday" from this record, it's like track 12. Paul said that they were embarrassed by it so they buried deep on side 2 of the Lp and it's gone on to be the most covered song in history with over 1,600 artists recording a cover of it and on top of it this song was performed over seven million times in the 20th century alone. Crazy, right? ✌️☮️💕

I have always loved/admired the construction of the backing vocals - how it's inserted, it's timing for those inserts and fades. So catchy, so infectious. By the way, will you ever at-least talk about seeing HELP or HARD DAYS NIGHT? Maybe you can't do a movie reaction, but I'd love to hear your comments after you've seen those films.
By the way, how many "one of the greatest Beatles songs" do you have? About 100? 200? I hate to tell you - if you haven't heard ALL of their songs by now, then you'll likely have double that number before you listen to all of them. I only have about 300 of their 600+ catalog as my Most Favorite One(s).

Yeah what an awesome song you know this was in that movie help and the way the plot goes I'll try not to give it away but they end up they had to have a army protecting them I had all these tanks and they were trying to put a bomb under where the Beatles were playing out in this field and it is amazing because they're out there not far from the Stonehenge which is an ancient artifact landmark I'm sure you seen it before anyhow as the movie goes the guy was working undercover and this guy was trying to get them to put the bomb Under The Beatles Underground and this other guy convinced him that they were in the spot where the Beatles were and he had a tape recorder and he turned it on and it was playing the song She's a woman which is a totally different song so in the movie you're going back from the night before and then your underground and you here in this he's a woman and then it's a very last note of the night before the bomb goes off in every all the guys in the band go running off and they jump on the tank and the thing and they get the hell out of there it's so great part of the movie you'll have to see that movie it's so cool that you got that keyboard in there and then you got Paul singing the lead but then you have John and George secret Harmony backup I just love their voices together okay gang can girl
Now that you have reacted to so many Beatles song, maybe it's time to have some fun and react to a song called "STARS ON 45 - BEATLES MEDLEY". This song was released in 1981 near the end of the disco era and went to number ! in many countries around the world. I remember dancing to this at night clubs. The best version is the album version and is about 16 minutes long. It's sung by a Swedish group...not the Beatles....but you'll never know. The first few minutes of this song is just a warm up. Then the Beatles kick in.

Probably the top half of Beatles songs qualify as somewhere between "really good" (The Night Before) and "truly great" (Let It Be). You will eventually get to some songs that are not that good. But it will take you *a lot* longer with the Beatles than with any other band.
The Night Before, not A Night Before.
