    my favorite scene of the entire movie, hes demonstrating to him that its is a whole different ball game in war with a live enemy shooting back then shooting a bottle, the difference between somebody whos been to war and who hasn't, brilliant scene

    Harsh but necessary. These men were going to see actual combat, something the Colonel had seen in all its horrors. They had to be hardened, fast and seriously, something the Major didn't quite grasp.

    • @kevinzhang3313
      @kevinzhang3313 Před 4 lety +2

      The Major didn't grasp it because he didn't believe a colored regiment ever would be allowed to fight, even though they all wanted to...he saw it more as unrealistically getting their hopes up.

      More like he had to show them that being a good hunter or marksman and being a good SOLDIER takes different skills.

    This is a great way to get them combat ready. A guy I knew in the Marines told me that he had to fix a weapon while his DI fired a rifle over his head. He had to learn to do everything while under fire, and not get distracted.

    Must have been incredibly cumbersome having to go through all those steps to fire one shot. Shaw was a bit rough on the soldier, but it probably saved his life later in the film, when he needed to get a shot off quickly to kill an on rushing enemy soldier.

    • @TheStapleGunKid
      @TheStapleGunKid Před 6 lety +7

      Yep, the typical civil war muzzle loader took 9 steps to reload. And for max speed it had to be done while standing. It must have been a nightmare to go through all those steps while people are shooting at you and your fellow soldiers are dropping dead all around you the whole time.

    • @kettch777
      @kettch777 Před 4 lety +1

      @@TheStapleGunKid That's why breech loaders were such a game changer. For the first time soldiers could reload while lying down or taking cover.

      British troops during the Napoleonic wars could fire 3 to 4 (badly aimed) shots a minute. The French noted that the British were slow to attack but “impregnable in defence. Quick with their muskets... devilish quick with their muskets.”

    “Teach them properly major...” you can see that Shaw wasn’t looking to take the 54th out of camp to be latrine diggers...

  • @Ares99999
    @Ares99999 Před 13 lety +7

    @bookkeeper57 Yes, he was actually helping them in doing this. Showing them that a soldier has to reload despite loud noise like shouts and gunfire.

  • @chaseustoo
    @chaseustoo Před 17 lety +1

    One of the best scenes in the movie. Shaw was trying to show thge regiment you had to reload fast while hearing gunshots, or you were bound to get shot! Excellent movie; the best Civil War movie of all time!!!!!!!!!!

  • @LuigianoMariano
    @LuigianoMariano Před 17 lety +2

    Harsh pressure aside, Shaw was basically informing Sharts and everyone that survival AND the outcome of a battle depended heavily on being able to reload faster than the opposing side.
    Because, in the age of Muzzle-Loaders, Accuracy would be useless on the front line if you were slow in reloading your weapon.

    I saw this in school. Good movie..but I think this scene is kinda funny now. I cant take Matts acting seriously here when he plays as an officer..it doesnt really suit him. " Faster! DO iT!..DO IT!"
    In the movie, The Last Samurai, the rifle training scene was pretty good. Tom Cruise did alright there.

  • @TheRenegadeOne

    Never thought about it before, but why does the Major keep his pistol loaded while in training? It seems risky but I really don’t know if this is accurate or not.

    @MondoBeno Yes sir. The standard Union weapon in the Union army was the Springfield .58 rifled musket. With it, a marksman could kill someone at 600 yards. Thats a range comparable to a modern M-16.

    • @bobanderson6656
      @bobanderson6656 Před 4 lety

      Late to the party. The above is wrong. An average marksman would have no chance to hit a target that far. A skilled sniper taking his time - maybe.

      @wilb6657 Před 4 lety

      @@bobanderson6656 Coming back to the party. What about what I wrote is wrong? According to data-skilled marksmen(not sharpshooters) could reliably make hits at 500 yards. The maximum effective range listed, however, is 700 yards.

    • @aastarafar
      @aastarafar Před rokem

      @@bobanderson6656 The M4 and M16 have an effective engagement range on individual targets of 550 meters (600 yards) using only ironsights. I can personally confirm that to be accurate. While some range estimation techniques are required to employ the weapon at that range, those techniques are trivial to teach to infantrymen.
