Then again, considering how prevalent the concept of ambivalence is utilized for every single character relationship, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a flirtatious hint somewhere in her behavior or at the very least an intent to gauge for a flustered reaction from Shinji and familiarize herself with his overall demeanor. Ambivalence in itself establishes an observable statement on how relationships can often prove to be far more compliacated than they initially appear, and eventually transcending beyond whatever labels we could've generalized them as. Denji and Power aren't just best friends, but act like bickering siblings despite having engaged in some un-sibling like activities in the past. Yet they also have no romantic feelings for one another in any capacity. A perfect example that is almost parallel to how Eva handles character relations, minus the conflict and madness within themselves.

What they don't understand is, that sex can be used to numb your depressive state. You can get addicted like to any drug and this forms your personality. Sex is fine in a relationship, but Shinji for example is better of to get therapy and form friendships. And if Asuna was to have a healthy / healing relationship with Shinji, it would be fine, too. But that's not what she offers. She doesn't help him by studying for example. She puts him down by calling him first dumb and then boring. But what you see in this scene are two depressed teenager - one tries numb her depression with sex, and one who doesn't distract himself (at that moment) with sex and is confused, when she approached him sexually. He tries to work on himself by studying. While she puts him down by calling him dumb, only to offer the distraction from the work he needs to do.
A few minutes later, he quietly escaped to his room... and spilled a bottle of mayo. You know exactly what kind of mayo I mean, he did so again in the hospital later.
Whenever I see this scene since I rewatch the Anime a lot I remember I gotta teach my kid the day i have one all my experience so that he isnt shy. One suffers a lot as a shy person or kid. I had similar situations like Shinjis with a girl i really liked but I panicked each time.
