    This is what I call an excellent video. gorgeous fall scenery and a very woodsy feel. I too mourn the passing of the Kathadyn and Stillwater fiberglass canoes from Old Town. Seems that we're both old school in our choice of gear for the outdoors, and our approach to local outings close to home. the only difference being that you're in the north woods and I'm in the Southeast. Sir, thank you for your time and efforts, and please keep the great videos coming. Specially the ones having to do with a canoe, a tarp and a fly rod!

      maseta3 - Thank you sincerely for your view and encouraging comments! Maine is so brilliant in the Fall and if you've never been, you should jot it down on your bucket list. I confess to being "old school" and find some of the old ways are still the best ways. I spent over a decade of my life in the southeast and have great memories of times there. I took note of your request for more videos of wood lore with canoe, fly fishing and tarp. You may enjoy my Alaska Canoe Adventure videos. All the very best and thanks again!

    You made me seriously homesick! I'm a Buckeye by birth and a Mainer by choice. Retired from The MAINEiacs in 05.
    My folks are in Levant and I'm building in Dixmont, so I guess we're sorta neighbors. I'm in Europe with my new bride and hope to bring her to Maine for the Summer and THIS is just the sort of thing I want to show her. My favorite place is Donnell Pond, haven't been for years and I'm aching to go back.

    • @WildernessAcademy
      @WildernessAcademy  Před 7 lety

      I have fished the Penobscot, but never stayed. I'm sure there are many places to stay but you would need to research your plans, many of the islands and shores are private native Indian land. I have not been to Donnell but you've made me curious. Warm regards.

    • @WildernessAcademy
      @WildernessAcademy  Před 7 lety +2

      Jonathan Hudson - Thank you Jonathan! I appreciate your view and comments. The coffee maker I used on this trip is a GSI Ultralight drip "pour over". It weighs almost nothing and the filter never needs to be replaced. You just empty the used coffee grounds out of it, rinse it off and it's ready for your next cup. I actually use a "pour over" at home. Practice with it at home to figure out your preferences, and if you bring good coffee with you on your treks, you can make coffee as good as anywhere on the planet. I've had that coffee filter system for years and still going strong. All the very best!

    Excellent video! Well made and really captured that fall, northern Maine vibe. One question, were the two fish you caught Chubs (Semotilus corporalis) or something else? If they were Chubs, how did they taste?

    • @WildernessAcademy
      @WildernessAcademy  Před 7 lety +1

      Baxter Brookies - One was a white perch and the other a lake chub. Hard to find a fish that tastes as good as a white perch from clean cold water. The lake chub has a firm white meat and tastes good as well. Clean, cold water produces better eating fish than lesser quality water. Thank you for your view and kind comments. More coming soon. Moose Terious - the wool hat that I'm wearing in this video is a hat I purchased from Orvis many years ago. I've seen some similar at L. L. Bean and also by Stetson. You can buy a camp tripod chair with existing legs, but if you want to eliminate the weight, chisel or file the rivets off that hold the seat to the legs and just take the seat and follow my instructions on this video. Wonderful share! I am curious how you would fend off a pack of coyotes if they chose to enter your campsite? Would bear spray work? Do you only need to discourage one coyote (bear spray to its face) for the rest of the pack to exit? Thanks!

    • @WildernessAcademy
      @WildernessAcademy  Před 7 lety

      I have never had a pack of coyotes get any closer than on this video. It sounded like 1 of the 4 or 5 packs I could identify that night were 50-100 yards from where I slept. To be honest, I have had several encounters with moose and am more concerned with them, especially in the Fall when the bulls are mating and very territorial and bad tempered. Most wildlife would be more interested in your food than human contact. My advice is always keep any food or smells away from where you sleep. I also usually carry a high power pistol and have it unholstered and within easy reach of where I lay. All the best!

    • @WildernessAcademy
      @WildernessAcademy  Před 4 lety

      Rob C - You always have to remember wildlife is wild. The main thing is to keep your food away from where you sleep. Coyotes usually don’t like human presence or scent. Most coyote attacks are from rabies. Always be prepared.
