As a second language, you have a mastery of English on a level I have not heard from many first language English speakers. Your descriptions of your auditory perceptions go further in communicating these human abstractions than every other audio reviewer. You go man!

Ok..... so I really need you to review all of the dacs. You're without a doubt, my favorite reviewer on CZcams. I loved that you had the opportunity to review the Lampizator, and I really hope you get more opportunities to review higher end dacs, and compare them to the less expensive ones.
First off, I want to express that when it comes to reviewing DACs, I trust you more than just about anyone. For English not being your first language, you're an incredible reviewer of DACs. My current DAC is a D30Pro and I like it alot. It replaced a SMSL SU-9 which I could not stand due to sharpness of edges. It was too fatiguing for me. I don't mind a bit of dynamic softness, rounded edges etc., but I really like the D30Pro spaciousness. That being said, "When do we get the Cirrus Logic Octo DAC chip version of the D70Pro review?" Hopefully, it will be similar to the D30Pro but a decent upgrade.

This is a really interesting review to me. I don’t own the D70, and I’m not in the market for one, but I did recently buy its sibling, the A70 Pro amp, which obviously has the same design, build and UI. And everything you say about the build, ease of use and intelligence of the D70’s design, I have to say is also entirely true of the A70 Pro. I’m really quite blown away by what Topping have done with these products, so it’s good to know that the DAC is just as impressive in use as the amp. Excellent review as always.

Based on you recommendation, I bought the Aune X8 Anniversary DAC + Sparkos Dual Discrete Amp SS3602 + Aune 9V linear power supply on prime day disount. Those came to $390 before tax. I really enjoy the greatly improved sound over my Cambridge Audio Cxa60 amp's built-in Wolfson WM8740 DAC.
The 9V linear power supply (LPS) actually improved the spaciousness and tone even more. I feel like the music is brought more forward and open up more with the 9V LPS. I was kind of expecting mentioning of the Aune X8 + Sparkos in this review. In any case, I wonder how my setup would compare to the D70 Pro Sabre with the addition of 9v LPS ? Thanks.
They would be neck to neck since I found both to be slightly better than D90LE for example. I still have the Aune by the way but simply couldn't compare it with everything... It would take me two weeks to do one review. 😄
Great review and breakdown of everything under 1k. Really gives people a great idea of what’s going to work for them. I think the only dac that is popular that a lot of people wish you compared these to would be the Schiit Bifrost 2/64. But I don’t expect you to have every dac. Schiit should send you one because you’re a top tier reviewer.

I've tried the Topping velvet, smsl do300, su10 and to be really honest i was happy with any of them. The SMSL was on offer so i went with that. I also have a 1K turntable with expensive MC cartridge, and it's suprising how close the dacs come in sound terms. You can get great sound for not a lot of money. Buy on features I say, and invest any savings elsewhere.
Thanks for another great review. I still own the original topping D 70. Since then I have purchased a Pontus also most recently the Eversolo A6 Master Edition to play through a Gustard A26. I can say I like them all.

He also perfectly describes Paris there, just as you describe the sound. I have a question for you: Do you plan to review a fairly new SMSL AL200 amplifier in the near future. I still love topping d70s mqa + Pre90 combo, but also own R2R tube DAC and 2x ES9038 DAC. D70s on double AKM's was so good that it should be timeless classic.

How much better is the d70 pro over the d90? Edit: Being that op didn't respond. I have now used the d70 pro sabre and it is significantly less resolving than the d90se. I was able to directly A/B test. I believe this is necessary when doing a review as making claims based on memory is faulty and will only confuse future potential buyers. Some other perhaps helpful points is that the d70 pro sabre doesn't have an oled screen. The screen can also not turn off completely like the d90se's auto mode. While the screen can go "black" it's an ips screen so there is plenty of backlight bleed and so the light is noticable and never completely black. The interface though is superior to any topping I've used and you can change almost all settings without having to do the annoying "turn off and hold to get to settings" topping always does. Overall, I believe the dac is a good offering for it's price range. The d70 is good but not best sounding imo however. I used mine with an a90 amp so I believe my results were about as true to topping without using an a70 amp.
Can you review the Geshelli Labs DAC?
Maybe Topping's best, but for me the D70 Pro OCTO is Topping's best DAC. Where the SABRE sounds too flat, the OCTO accelerates and is a lot of fun. The SABRE actually sounds a little cleaner and is a little faster, but the OCTO is warmer, sounds fuller and has great dynamics. I love the OCTO.

I own the D70 Pro Headphone Amp/Preamp. It has prodigious power and absolute tranparency. Paid $500 for it on Amazon USA, and use it to take two channels of the output from my Octo DAC 8 Pro and amplify them. My source is the Smyth A16 Realizer, so I listen to binauralized Atmos movies, two channel music and regular cinema content upmixed to Auro 3D.
The D70 Pro replace my THX AAA 789 which was starting to have a noisy volume know. In any case, the Topping has virtually unlimited power to drive my HD 800s and LCD X's which is very important because all of the processing the Realizer does eats up a ton of digital headroom which I recoup with brute power on the back end, and the Topping looks like it supplies gobs of it.
My setup are MF M3si, Dali Oberon 7 with D70 the old version without "S". The sound is good but feel a bit muddy. Should I go for Z8 or D70 pro?? What is your thought?
Dear iiWi please help me on selecting a DAC here. Which among these will be the best sounding in terms of warmness, depth, clarity, soundstage, spaciousness, Tight as well as clear and extented bass, Superb mids, fuller body and detailed but smooth highs? (1) Topping D70 Pro Sabre or (2)TOPPING - D70 PRO OCTOZ or (3) SMSL SU-9 Ultra DAC or (4) Topping E70 Velvet DAC. Also I wd like you to remember for reference that once you mentioned akm4499ex dac chip as the better one in comparision to Sabre ESS chips.
What do you think what will be a better match for utopia? A70 Pro + D70 Pro or A70 Pro + Z8? I currently own a A30 Pro + D30 Pro stack and find it a little bit lacking in its transient response.
Topping “discrete” is getting more common and a discrete output stage on their DACs could make a big improvement.
I have been using that dac for 1 week. I use it with wiim pro network player. In pre mode i can change the volume of dac but in dac mode i can’t change. Did you compare the sound quality of each mode?
Great review again. Have you had a chance to compare it against Eversolo streamer's DAC that you reviewed recently. Wonder if D70Pro is clearly better.
D70 pro is better, cleaner, more revealing with tiny details and quick transits. But their overall tonality is very similar. Also, the difference is noticeable but not huge and DMP-A6 internal DAC is fully in line with Topping E70 velvet for example... Which is just one notch below D70 pro in terms of overall clarity and speed... and I'm not sure that D70 pro would be worth the investment over the already very good internal DAC.

yes please comment on this point - I have the d70s and love it, so it would take something special to make me replace it, but I'm very curious nonetheless
Im interested in this product to add to my power amp as a preamp but im not sure if its the best item for this use, yes its very clean and has very high s/n ratio and distortion numbers but couldn't this just make it to clinical and Sharp and fatiguing with no warm and flavour and there's the reliability and warranty issues to deal with, topping seem to have many teething problems. The last thing you need is your preamp to stop working then your whole music chain is down. Is it really that much better than a standard preamp with lower spec numbers?
Love the display. If it decoded MQA files I would give it a try. My favorite DAC I now have is the SMSL-SU9, and I really like my Topping E50 a lot too. Great video. Thank you.

Depends if the rest of the system is good enough... Given it is I think that D70 Sabre is a decent upgrade with more clarity, more dynamics, and just more engaging overall.

Thank you for all the excellent reviews! I was wondering how would you compare this DAC to the Eversolo Z8 that you reviewed recently? I’m about to purchase one of these DAC’s and I’m down to the Eversolo Z8, this Topping and the SMSL SU10. I’ve also been wondering and would love your opinion is it worth waiting another 6-10 months and saving up for the Gustard R26?
If you don't need a headphone out of Z8 then go for this one, it's better. SU-10 is more different than it's better as I've explained in the video so choose according to your taste and what you think your system needs more.
Now saving for R26, can't say if you should or not. It's a great full bodied DAC with great soundstage... But you know that there's a diminishing return and it's not double the performance. So I would go for it only if it doesn't strain your budget and the rest of the system is equally good already. Otherwise D70 pro and SU-10 are both mighty sounding DACs too.

Seems to me the D70 pro at $700.00 US is the best bargain of the bunch. I’ve got a pretty resolving system based around Macintosh C39 pre amp and MC139 power amp into refurbished vintage 1962 JBL’s with 15” woofers and EV horns front and Focal 826’s as rear channels. I have a Music Fidelity Si2 integrated amp running the Focal’s. I’m currently using a AudioLab 6000 CDT and a Sony Super Audio CD / DVD player through my headphone rigs AUNE X8 Magic DAC with upgraded Berson Vivid op amp. I’m hoping to upgrade my main systems DAC from that and putting the little AUNE back with my headphone system. Again thank you for the many excellent reviews!
@@estenray5385 In your shoes and mind you I don't own or thinking of getting any of these, I'd go for the R26. With the thought that since I got this kind of system and I have the Aune X8 as a DAC, I'd get more of an upgrade with it, than with the D70 or the SU10. I don't think there's too much between the X8 and those two. Anyway not as much. Plus I get to introduce and familiarize myself to the R2R topology, with something really good. Also I can wait. Its not that the X8 is crap, far from it and finally by then who knows what else might be around.

interesting! but i wish you to tell about dacs scene presentation (no in this review), width, depth/layering (very important to me :) , height, overall holographic with comparison to others. you have many reviews with your impressions about that, hopefully you will not forget in future:) btw, vs. Draco scene depth?)
Draco does not have as impressive soundstage as some other R2Rs like Ares II or Ladder Schumann. It's actually in line with best DS DACs on that front such as SMSL SU-10.
D70 Pro is better with soundstaging than any previous Topping but a hair less deep and wide than Draco and SU-10. You can notice it in a direct comparison but it would be difficult to tell with more time apart.
D70 Pro Sabre vs D70 Pro Octo...which one to go ?
Compliment for another great review. What I miss however is more focus upon soundstage as that seems the flaw of most Sabre dacs.
It's actually very good. As good as the soundstage on E70 velvet but with more clarity and better separation. It falls just a hair short to Draco and SU-10. Only Denafrips Ares II makes a noticeably bigger soundstage at this price point, but it comes with its own set of limitations.
I have m500 mkii with Sabre and I feel Sabre dacs don't give music emotion like an AKM DAC. This is just my opinion. As even my topping E30 (1st gen complete AKM chips inside) gives that music emotion or may be I can say 'musicality'... 😉

I feel that D70 pro is better across the board - more dynamics, bigger soundstage, darker background. But the rest of the system has to be revealing to show it.

Very similar tonality but A26 is a bit more open, airy, with slightly better detail retrieval and wider soundstage. Once again difference is not huge but it is noticeable if you listen to it critically.

DO300 is equally resolving as E70 velvet and SU-9 pro, but warmer in tonality. So if you watch vs E70 part of the video you can copy paste that comparison and just add even more warmth to DO300.

Yes it does, I just think I didn't mention it in that review because it didn't influence my opinion on the sound as much as it did here. Anyway, everybody should try both levels and see what works best in their system. I like that we have the option.
@@iiWiReviews When I tried 5V, I found a good increase in the overall volume, but I found it was rather too much for my entertainment room hence kept it at default 4V which is more than enough for my need. And infact I believe it won't improve anything on the sound quality itself as far as the DAC is concerned. Yes it's a good feature to have it there in the future may be for even bigger and larger spaces.
Only I wish all these dacs had an external power source input feature so that we can utilize of a good quality LPS even to further improve the background darkness etc.
I'll give dac's a rest for a few years and improve other parts of my system. There will always be a choice between lush and natural and quick and resolving, so getting two dac's is the thing to do if you suffer from FOMO.
@@johnm3544 There is a danger of me collecting dozens of DAC's in that like I did with photo lenses (over 200). I also need to hold myself in check buying too many speakers already ;).
From my experience with the d30 pro: it sounds quite different depending on the drivers and firmware and not necessarily the newest ones are the best. I tried now with the "Kernel Streaming" version (from Audionirvana Studio), which is said to bypass these drivers. The sound is much different. Certain sounds are less accentuated, but in general. it seems that we have much more natural sounds ("analog") and they harmonize much better with each other and are arranged much better in space. It seems that the Topping drivers, trying to "improve", distort the original sound, which loses its meaning, and its real spatiality. I would be curious how this DAC would sound in "Kernel Streaming".
It seems you’ve experimented with drivers. Question have to tried installing an older driver software? Is there any harm in that?
@@mopnem When I bought the DAC, a few years ago, version V5.05 or older was installed. I have tried all the new versions until V5.57, but I have had good results only with 5.05, 5.20, and 5.27. The more recent drivers are distorting the sound in my experience. I have also tried a newer firmware version but have similar problems. So, I have successfully switched different versions newer or older, but please consider that I have started with some older ones.
I just tried, and it it works, I do not have any official information.

How does it compare to the Lampizator?
Lampizator has much richer tone timbre and noticeably bigger soundstage. It also reveals more fine deteils.

Pa bolji je pomalo na sve strane. Znači malo čistiji zvuk, malo energičniji, malo lepše rasloji... Čuje se bez problema napredak ako je sistem dobar ali nije sad to neka baš wow razlika kao što je u ceni.

I would say that D70 pro takes a win regarding overall clarity and dynamics. If I don't need a headphone out then D70 pro would be my choice.

D30 pro has a very warm sound signature in the bass and midbass especially, and laid back mids. D70 pro is leaner but more neutral. It has cleaner tones and better separation, it's more dynamic too.

I really like the Velvet. I have been looking at this DAC for a bit but can't pull the trigger as I like what I hear from the Velvet so much. I would rather have had a review on the L70 as that AMP is something, I believe, would hold me over for quite some time. Still, excellent review but not something I am going to be purchasing. I'm kinda "DAC'd" out.
Please Please and Please, reviewers should stop making misleading statement like "transparent for this price range."
Transparency is transparency. Either a device is transparent or it's not.
It's not misleading. It's just that you obviously think of that trait in a binary way - either it's transparent or it isn't. But it's not how that works in reality.
Given that every DAC at least produce sound that resembles to the source we can for sure say that 0% transparency (which would be no sound) doesn't exist, or that 0% transparency is a broken product. 100% transparency exists only when you listen to real life humans and instruments in front of you.
That out of the way, you can clearly hear that D70 Pro Sabre lets more deteils from the recording pass trough than E70 does, but not as much as Gustard A26 does. So, it for sure feels that some DACs are more transperent than others. It's not some perk that they either have or don't have.
When the same adjective is used to describe optical properties, like in image or video editing software or simply glass and plastic in real life, it has gradation, not just two extreme binary states.
So I respectfuly disagree with your viewpoint and the idea that reviewers are using this adjective wrong.
I never understood why (since youre alluding to snake oil) skeptics stick around the forums and reviews if you've already debunked it. Is it a lack of attention at home? Or do you just like arguing?
@@iiWiReviews My point is, reviewers should stop equating transparency with price. Depending on how a product does let details from the recording pass through, simply say "the product has low, medium or excellent transparency."
Some affordable dacs perform equal or better at being transparent than some expensive ones. When you say transparent for it's price, it's as if the higher the price the better the transparency; which then is misleading.

It's very easy probably for people to go, since this isn't in this price range - I know it's worse than this tier of over 1k products. So yes this all could be subjective at the end of the day. ORRRR this reviewer is correct and simply thinks the Gustard is more transparent even if it was priced at $500. That is the big question though, if all these products under 5k were priced at $500 - would all the reviews change? : ) Then we would probably be talking about the size of the gear. So yeah I wish we could have an alternate world where all these products were priced exactly the same and all were in the same size box. Then we would really know where the differences between subjective and objective lie. But we don't live in that world.
No it’s not. Think of window tint, and how much light it let’s through. It’s not just clear glass, and tinted glass. There’s different percentages of clarity, depending on the strength of the tint. And since most people don’t normally shop $4k DAC’s alongside $500 ones. It makes sense to compare them at similar prices.
Maybe you’ve never went up the HiFi ladder yourself. So you’ve never heard it yourself. But I assure you that there are big differences between the clarity of audio gear as you go up and down the price range.
