  • Let me know what you think of these gold coins in the comments, do you have any? Are they something you'd like to learn more about?
    Sovereigns have always been a hugely popular coin for both collectors and gold investors alike. In todays video I take a brief look at these wonderful coins. I hope to elaborate on the sovereign series in the future too!

    So, there’s me thinking how great this video was, sovereigns, Victoria, young head etc , then I get a shout out!!!! I almost choked on me drink🙆‍♂️. Good onya Matt👌. If it’s in your means, everyone should have at least one sovereign and a half sov , too- just for size comparison. Thanks, J.

    I love and collect sovereigns.
    Even though I live in Perth I don’t collect their “modern” sovereigns.
    I think videos covering each of the Australian mints and talking about which of their coins are scare / rare would be great.

    I've got Victoria and George sovereigns from Sidney, Perth and Melbourne mints, India only made sovereigns for one year, 1911.
    Some Australian gold in Victoria's reign in 1859 was of a peculiar consistency, being too brittle, a metallurgist by the name Ansel was tasked to modify it.
    These can be recognised by a tiny modification of Victoria's hair band.

    Hi Matt, I have watched a few of your short videos, nicely done, I like the sovereigns and have a fair few, usually I just buy them “bullion” grade from dealers though, I prefer the older the better so 90% are queen Victoria, I find them a little bit bewildering tbh, the subtle differences, mint marks, st George, shields, halves etc plus the shear time span of production leaves me a bit overwhelmed lol, I do have a few that are more numismatic then bullion being some George the 4th and of those a nice 1823 double sovereign, way better in the double 👍.
    I actually find the $200 Koalas, Charles & Di, 82 comm games, 87 departure, 88 landing, more Koalas and then the “pride of Australia” series was a lot easier and fun.
    I noticed your video on the $200 Coins and how your not much of a fan and don’t personally have any, I think they are great value (very Australian…the sovereign is so English, no offence lol ) and if you take the 250,000 minted in 1980 from the estimated 800,000 coins produced then look at figures amongst the rest some (as you mentioned) do have low production numbers in unc & proof some as low as 12,000, 8,000, 6,000 down to 3 - 4,000, although low mintage doesn’t always guarantee desirability I personally believe some of the series will “eventually” be worth more then spot + $20 as I know myself by completing a couple of sets it wasn’t as easy to find some of them and even now the rarer are starting to command more then spot +$20 (with some dealers), I still buy them (when I have the $ to spare) but have a varied collection ( like most ppl).
    Merry Christmas to all.

    Hey Matt, I can't help but notice, all the Queens' heads on coins I've seen are wearing a crown, but the Kings don't seem to. Am I wrong, or are there some coins out there that are the other way around?

    • @ThompsonsCoins
      @ThompsonsCoins  Před rokem +1

      That's right Stephen!
      The early Victoria effigy has a wreath as opposed to a crown but you'll notice old pennies with George V have him wearing a crown. I think it may have been a matter of personal preference for the monarch of the day.
      Thanks for watching!

    I HAD a rather nice collection in years gone by and it's bout time I looked beyond those horrible $2 coins that turned me into dummy of sorts.
    Could you tell me or someday perhaps do a video of a few of the rarer dates and mints of the sovereigns?
    Thankyou again Matt Thompson! 🇦🇺🤗

    • @ThompsonsCoins
      @ThompsonsCoins  Před rokem +1

      If it's an earlier sovereign with a shield design as opposed to the st george and dragon you will find the mintmark beneath the portrait of Queen Victoria :)
