I think Lorelai internalized a lot of the shame surrounding her pregnancy. She’s been hearing that she got pregnant and ruined everything for almost 20 years now and remember when she says Rory is smart and careful and, “not like her.” So I think her having the “good kid” is more about what she thinks of herself than Paris.

During season 3, it’s so hard to see Paris spiraling but it makes sense. She has so much pent up aggression and tension. The reason she’s so touchy about Jaime is because it’s one thing that shows her vulnerability. Callback to Season 1 when she tells the school about Max and Lorelai dating so the students stop talking about Paris’ parents divorcing. Her family and her close relationships are touchy subjects and she thinks that it makes her weak. So when she contributes having sex with her losing out on Harvard, it makes a lot of sense why she has a breakdown. Paris really struggles to connect to people. Rory and Jaime are the ones who really understand her hence why even when she’s mad at Rory, she still wants Rory’s attention. Paris knows that Rory will always have her back. I think Rory sees Paris as another version of Emily hence all her sympathy.

Yeah Francie making comments about Paris bf is so realistic as many high schoolers do care what other people do but understandable that Paris doesn’t want Francie to know

I think Lorelai in that moment of “I’ve got the good kid” definitely stems from her getting pregnant so young. She fears Rory repeating her mistakes, so she felt relief that Rory hasn’t even gotten close to doing that. It does feel like she’s trying to place a morality on it, which is bad, but I don’t know if that’s really what they were trying to convey. They could have been more clear in the writing

love the video. i also feel like it set up amazing character development for Paris to have lost her place at Harvard, it only motivated her to work even harder to eventually get a place at Harvard med school.

In retrospect, and with the recording we see of her Harvard interview, it was absolutely great that she didn't get in. Like you said, it's a growing experience for her. The board 100% saw that she was an overachiever TO A SELF-DESTRUCTIVE EXTENT (yell-interrupting the board to finish her point!?) and gave her a "no" to dampen it.
If they'd let her in, her expectations for herself would've just stayed sky-high and she'd have been even more disappointed when inevitably she failed to get something later, and anything post-college admission - especially as college is full of failures and successes - might've prompted an even worse blow-up!
Even Jordan lost sometimes. You gotta be okay with not winning even at the highest level. Perhaps if Rory had had a serious loss like this, she'd have not self-destructed in the later seasons. But that's a different convo.

I've always found it unbelievable that Paris didn't get into Harvard while Rory got into every school she applied to. They were both academically strong, but Paris had been doing a lot of other things outside of school almost since she was in kindergarten that was supposed to increase her importance as a student, while Rory thought for the longest time that good grades were all that was needed to pass at Harvard. In reality, the situation would probably be the other way around, and then Rory would probably only have gotten into Yale because of her name, because she just had good grades. But it goes on like this, Rory is unambitious and still gets everything in her hands, while Paris is very ambitious and still has to fight for everything she gets.

Oh the little cootie catchers! My older sisters, who were in high school had one, and I snuck and stole it. I was 7 or 8 I think? I very, VERY, carefully unfolded it in my room and figured out how it worked and how to make them myself and then folded my sister's back up and snuck it back into my sister's room. Then I made them at school and amazed my friends. When I made them at home my sisters were shocked because turns out they didn't know how to make them either. They had a friend that made them. And so I had to make them for my sisters too.

I agree but they should have had Rory not get into Harvard or Yale. Seeing her have to grapple with what see felt was owed to her and have to go to UConn would have been fascinating. I also think she should have had a similar storyline to Violet in season 1 of Mom.

I thought I was the only one annoyed when he says Go Back to Sleep to Rory 😂 it just always makes me feel ick. Like you just met her. Idk lol.
On Lorelai saying I’ve got the good kid, I just recently watched this episode and had it strike me more as an adult now. It also made me feel like it was a little slut shame-y but I guess it could also be construed as Paris was kinda freaking out that she had had sex asking for perspective so perhaps not sure if she should have had sex yet. Maybe Lorelai took it more as Rory was more self aware on that she wasn’t yet ready.

I agree. I began to think of it that way as I was editing, like maybe she meant that she was proud to hear that Rory has her own mind. It just still feels so unclear and for me if the message was she is proud simply because she hasn't done it, I strongly disagree with that. Also feels sooo good to hear it annoyed someone else to hear him say that too I thought maybe I was making it deeper than it was and maybe I still am but idc it was too much so soon imo

It would be interesting if you did a mini series of the actors interviewing for the show or characters. (If any other actors were considered to be the parts).

WHY did I never notice it was Charlie from Twilight?? Loved the video btw. I also hated the way the show demonised sex when it came to young women when it's not a bad thing whatsoever. We women also have desire from a young age as men do. In men it's celebrated and in women is punished. And god forbid you get pregnant too as if it was only your fault and not the men that participated and the society that failed all of us on telling us how to avoid pregnancies! I hated how they made it look like the "good person", meaning the virgin, was the worthy of getting accepted into Harvard. Paris was around 17 when she did it and with her boyfriend, it meant something, it was special and they turned it into this sinful awful thing. I didn't like the way this show treated the subject of sex and reproduction at all, with Lorelai, with Sookie and Jackson, with Rory, Paris, Lane... no one has a good story with it. I understand that with Lorelai abortion was not an option in a family like hers, but Sookie and her 3rd pregnancy? Lorelai never mentioning the possibility of abortion to her when she's not conservative at all?

When I first watched this as a teenager I felt happy that Paris didn't get into Harvard because it knocked her off her high horse, and I think that's what the writers were going for! Later though watching it as an adult it felt like Paris was almost being punished for being a teenage girl, like because she became s active she didn't deserve to get into Harvard. A lot of people mention the Harvard interview that she bombed, I wonder if we could ever get the say of a real admissions advisor who could give perspective on how important the interview is over everything else.

Random: but I cannot see Headmaster Charleston without thinking of the creepy Evander Geddes this actor played in HBO’s Carnivale (my all time fav show) - am I the only one 😅?! I’ve just been watching GG for fun escapism (the first seasons are better than I remembered, but I don’t like S4/5 onwards) Love your videos 😊

I don’t think lorelai was implying Paris is bad for having sex I think that she was just proud of how maturely Rory handled the conversation and was able to comfort Paris especially when you remember that the two of them were not friendly at this point Rory being able to look past their differences and be there for her when she needed her is definitely good kid behavior

I agree, I don’t like S4 onwards… the characters development is poor…I hate the Dean stuff - I don’t like that his aggressive behaviour is never addressed. I don’t like Logan & hate how blind Rory is to his terrible behaviour (eg. his stealing Emily’s antique thing). But I do like Christopher 😅 and (sorry not sorry) I don’t like Luke - maybe it’s just the chemistry between the actors. Rory-Jess & Lorelei-Chris feel like they have the best chemistry
