Hi everyone! I hope you're enjoying my series on synths with cool arpeggiators! There's more to come - and they're already filmed and scheduled for release - so be sure to subscribe and you'll get the notification when they're live. Let me know in the comments below of your experience with the MC-505, even if you have a question. I've owned mine for 20 years or so now, so I should be able to help ;) Have an awesome day, and lets get busy making some music!
I hope you have an E-MU xl-7 to add to this synths with cool arps collection 😁
Hi INVALID COMMAND - I don't have anything from E-MU sadly :( Perhaps someone could lend me one?
Do you need the memory card to save the arpeggio user data?
ranzee Thanks for that great MC-505 tutorial! Please do more... 😊
I bought one. Using it atm it’s amazing
The MC-505 is my sonic sketchpad for quick-rendering my ideas into music.
Was my first instrument I got for my 20th birthday in 1998. Still have it. Needs a bit of love and my screen looks worse as yours does.... but still use it to this day. It def needs a make-over and a clean... I've learned something new today with the arpeggiator. Thank you for sharing.
The MC-505 is an instrument with lots of tricks up its sleeve....but only when you know what you can do with it - and how - because these nice functions are hidden deep in secondary menus and are not very intuitive.
Hey OldTekBench! Fantastic :) hopefully you'll dust it off and give it some love :) Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks a lot. I'm using the 505 mostly for its arp. You opened me so much doors !
Hi Boris, that's awesome! Thanks so much for letting me know!
Great video!! Thanks for making it.
Hi Doron, Pleasure! Thanks for watching and commenting :)
YES!! I've been hoping for this video ever since I mentioned the MC-303 (as "Naked Bob") and found out you were well ahead of me.. Looks like the same incredible arpeggiater! It's amazing how advanced these original grooveboxes still are.. I wish the gate length programming would have become more common.
Hey man! Great stuff! Yes, the sad thing for me is I've never really utilised the ARP side of the MC-505 until more recently. Crazy how we are oblivious to things?
@@ranzee Hello,im in possession of the mc303 505 808 and the 909,I just took my 505 down from the loft today I changed the display into green one it looks fantastic, ill have another wee look at he arp tomorrow, thanks for arming me with more knowledge.
Subscribed..
I have the 505 and used it so much. My screen is completely dead but I miss the arpeggiator the most. So many functions and patterns. I think it is the best.
Fix it
@@ET2carbon I made this comment a while ago but by chance I have undertaken this project. It is currently taken apart and I am replacing the screen, whitening the yellowed keys, and giving it a good cleaning it up. Hope to be rocking the 505 arpeggiator soon.
@@edmoification awesome to hear man!
@@edmoification I don't suppose you might know a way to modify the screen I2C interface for the 1602 screen to an arduino for higher resolution?
@@edmoification have you seen the style flip site for the sticker overlay you can customize?
Very cool! Thanks for sharing 👍
I changed the display this summer on my machine. It was much easier than I thought it would be. I recommend you do it while the display parts are still available.
I haven't turned my MC-505 on for a while - I should probably do this!
Great vid. How easy it is to assign some of the 8 channel's to midi output?
Great video! That last arpeggio pattern sounds amazing with the SH-01A.
Hi LousyFacelift - it was awesome fun! I really like the sound from the SH-01A, as you can guess ;)
ranzee The SH-01A is such a great sounding hands on synth, tons of fun! It's a tough decision between the Behringer MS-101 and the Boutique but I prefer the smaller four voice version with the original sequencer, even though it's not fully analog.
@@LousyFacelift if you could get both, then the problem doesn't exist :)
ranzee Yes, oh well... "problems"... hahaha! Take care man! 😉
That's so helpful. Thanks.
Cheers Coilin :)
Wity regards your display, the diy repair with the iron works, but for best results you need to completely remove the LCD unit. This can only be done by removing the underneath panel, diconnecting the ribbons veey carefully, removing the PCB board, popping the cover off the display area and removing the 4 fixings. When you have the LCD fully removed it is much easier to apply pressure to the ribbon. Get a clothes iron and allow it to get hot. Press a blunt knife against the iron until it is quite hot. Carefully apply pressure with the knife to the wide ribbon where it comes from the LCD PCB. Now repeat the process where the wide ribbon attaches to the LCD glass. Next repeat the process for the white ribbon (I'm not sure if this is necessary). This is all a bit daunting, but it does work. Just take care with it. Best of luck!
Thanks! I have one of these on my radar (as soon as we move). I was considering the Toraiz Squid or the Octatrack. This or the qy700 seem to be very strong alternatives.
and infinitely cheaper.
Hi how can i program a sequence on the mc 505 ?
So many options to go through I forgot how he got there .
Nice!
I am on my second MC505, and also learning my MC909, did you see whether your MC505s filter and envelope could control the Sh01a ? I thought the 505 controls did send midi CCs ?
Great video.
Peacefrom oz
I need to get mine out and give it a repair.
Awesome brother!!! just had this amazing machine fall into my lap actually! Close to the same time I bought the new roland mc-707 and man take a guess which one im using mire
Nice stuff - lucky you getting the 707 too! How are you liking it?
Amazing man, so much depth to it, design on all levels can really be a timesink never ending rabit hole if you want to dig deeper and deeper. Now with 505 its just changed everything for me really gotta rethink everything now. Definitely be setting it up for using master effects for audio in and bringing 505 even more up to 2019/2040 lol . Add my avalanche run into the send/return of 707. Lot fun to be had!.
ranzee another thing that i found today pretty cool is pluged midi out to in 505-707 and its like they were meant be together every knob on 505 works for my drums looper or tone on 707 on top of all my 707 stuff so its pure madness at a new level
All the sliders the same ones you use for sound design attack decay Release sustain and so out works just as it does for 505 on 707 like its one machine 🤯
Also had mine from new and still have another in mint condition still in box.....
I just got my Mc 505 and would really appreciate learning how to save and copy patterns the work flow if you could do that would be great trying to learn it all not easy for a beginner
Hey MIKE 5 !! Awesome man - you'll love it. To do that is a little tricky - so I'll add this to my list of vids ... :)
ranzee that’s great really want to see this the save pattern load pattern ect thanks a lot will be helpful to anyone with a Mc 505
@@ranzee I think a few videos can be made on this amazing system the Mc505 is picking up getting more praise would be good also to get to see how to use it after as a midi sequncer also theres a few videos but the save patterns and pattern building would be great to learn the main functions to build a track!!!!!
We'll see what we can do ... my MC-505 needs a few pots repaired, and the LCD screen first :(
please can you do a complete tutorial on the mc 505 itself!
Hi Taymor - thanks for the suggestion. I'll add it to the list :)
I've considered doing a display replacment on mine...and I need to get it out of the closet and hook it up again. Of my current gear, if I suddenly couldnt use a computer as master sequencer, I'd probably use the MC-505.
Hi James! Yes, I need to do my display still :/
Just ordered mine last week because I remembered how much I loved the arpeggiator. Are you on the same Facebook user group as I am? 😀
Hi Kenneth - that's awesome! My facebook page is: facebook.com/ranzeeofficial - we can do all fb things there ;)
Also get yourself some of these knobs that fixx the wobbly pots...
czcams.com/video/32nb8POkdaE/video.html
Apparently ironing the circuits for the screen fix that? Not done it but have heard success stories from pals.
Hi the croupier, yeah that's also what people have been telling me.
Great demo !
For me the most complete arpeggio is on The MC 808, you have more or less 40 complex patches inside !
The machine is not the best MC ...This why i use it as a 16 track midi sequencer/arpeggiator for my synthz, imao !!
Hi Eric. Fantastic bit of gear and still very much relevant. I owned the MC-808 for about 3 years and ended up letting it go because the 505 did it well - and I wasn't that happy with the sampler side of it. Otherwise - I loved the motorized faders and the rest of the performance stuff was fantastic.
Fix it ! A few pots and knos are easy to swap and an LCD should be a doddle
hehe - I am - it will get there!
the roland mc303 can do this and it is half the size of the mc 505
It does not matter what arp's are in the machine it's not going to make the tracks for you
This is a example of the sounds in the roland mc303 and the track i made czcams.com/video/cLXOuVoS9ag/video.html
but i would do the same send the midi out and use hardwear or a daw to trigger sounds
but i really like the drum sounds on the mc303
I also have an MC-303 :) Thanks for stopping by!
Screen replaced for 35 bucks (30 euro)
