    In this 1 year review, I want to answer the questions from many viewers about how these panniers have performed.
    The Tusk Panniers are an increasingly popular choice among budget minded ADVenture riders. In this video, I will cover what my experience has been.

    Loctite all the hardware especially the tab on the locks. Lost one lock had to replace the set. My KLR was my daily commuter, lids on and off daily. Several times for got to latch a lid, finally lost one! Spares are available but now my lids are tethered to the bike with a piece of paracord, lesson learned!

    I am getting close to buying a KLR. The Tusk products appear to be fairly good quality for the price. The main shortcoming I see is the latch design. The exposed catches on the lids would be super easy yo defeat with an adjustable wrench or hammer to bend down the catch so that the loop can be removed from the catch. I suspect a large adjustable wrench would bend those catches down in seconds. I wish Tusk had used a over latch like Touratech and others use that blocks access to the lid catches.
    Otherwise, they look very competent for the price.

    Good review on these Tim! I have been hunting for panniers for my Africa Twin and was focused on Givi ones. However The Givi mounting brackets alone is $218.00 less than what I would spend putting a complete Tusk setup on my bike. I think most panniers are outrageously priced for what they are. These are much more sensibly priced I think. What I am still on the fence about is due to the Africa Twin having a high exhaust to get around it will make the bike wider on one side than the other where as the Givi set has a 37 litre on the right side and a 48 litre on the left which makes the back the bike look even. I am not sure if my OCD nature can deal with it not being symmetrical looking. But it is a saving of about $900.00

    I've dumped my klr with these panniers and they took quite a beating. It dented them in pretty good. The good news is that the frame rock solid. If i had it to do over again i would go with the tusk frame and wolfman soft back which i have mounted to them now. If you are looking for decent lockable hard cases then these will fill the role. However, if you do a lot of hard off-roading then I would opt for soft bags.

    My only complaint about the Tusk Panniers is you MUST make sure they are locked when moving. I had mine close and twice I had the latches pop open, then off comes the lid. The first time I had to go back on my route and found it, the second time I heard it come off but I now check to make sure they are locked before leaving. The only other item that is really annoying is the antitheft feature, drilling the hole in exactly the right place is very difficult.

    • @Tim2Wheels
      @Tim2Wheels  Před 5 lety

      That's interesting to hear. I only locked mine when I was going to leave my bike unattended. I rode with them unlocked 98% of the time with no problem. I guess it is a good idea to lock them just to be safe.
      Thanks for sharing that information.

  • @BeSatori

    Seems like they could help keep the rest of the bike from coming down on your foot by keeping it from contacting the ground. I would think that is a bigger risk than getting a leg all the way back there for it to land on.

    I've had mine on one day and on the highway they cause tremendous drag and about 300-400rpm difference. These are going to destroy gas mileage. Handling was affected as well; much more felt highway turbulence. That said, I may not keep them on for the work commute but they will be awesome for travel. Going to look for some way to get a little more aerodynamics somehow.

    • @Mario-xl1fn
      @Mario-xl1fn Před 6 lety

      goofyfoot2001 we have 3 KLRs on a round the world trip with these panniers. They are great. Mileage is about 50-55mpg when going 60. But when you get up to 65-70 it drops to 45-50. At 80 it goes down to like 35-40. But we do most of our driving around 60 and below. Not many highways in these parts haha.
      We love the panniers. They are super tough. We have all wrecked on and off road with them and they are great.

    Thank you for the video. My concern is: 1.- If the size large isn't to bulky , heavy and make to much of an air brake for cruising. 2.- when you place it high for ground clearance, then your Center of Gravity its way up, if you care about having you CG low as possible, then crossing creeks or mud will hit the bottom. if you(I) place it as far forward as possible again for longitudinal CG, it may hit the passenger or even you foot. I'm going to Patagonia and need this (a) Panniers, but thinking in the medium, (taking measures on the bike). For exact fitting and drilling the best is a template , maybe in your next video? TY

    • @Tim2Wheels
      @Tim2Wheels  Před 6 lety

      Hi Federico - Good questions. I will do my best to provide good answers.
      1) I don''t think the Large size (37 liters each) are too bulky. I prefer to have the ability to pack more items inside to boxes for protection. I ride with them on the bike nearly all the time. I have not noticed a big difference in handling or drag/fuel mileage.
      2) I placed them high for two reasons. First, to avoid trapping my foot under the boxes when in rough terrain (this is the biggest drawback to hard panniers). Second, to give the most ground clearance possible. When packing, I load the heaviest items in the bottom and lighter items at the top and try to balance each side. I have never felt this had a big impact on the CG. I mounted my boxes far enough rearward to allow for a pillion rider to have foot room. If you don't expect to carry a passenger, then you can move them forward more.
      Overall, these boxes a very rugged. I strongly suggest you add blue thread locker to ALL screws/bolts/nuts. I have not had problems with anything working loose.
      Thanks for the comment, I wish you the best on your adventure.
      Thanks for watching.

    • @federicocerbonim7654
      @federicocerbonim7654 Před 6 lety +1

      Thank you for your answer, I do agree with you. I'm going to upgrade the "box" using rivets on the footman loops, and weld a double T handle between them instead of using the strap, also rivets in the base of locking system and the lock, also i'm going to install two hinges on the side of the top like on a metal bullet canister, so I can open it from rear to front and don't have to take it off, beside is more secure. I'l like to but wont have time, is to cut in an wide angle, the bottom front of the box, to eliminate that aggressive angle were your foot can hit. Again, Thank you for your answer.

      Steve Rymarczyk - Hi Steve, Yes I had upgraded the rear spring to a Top Gun 8kg/mm and upgraded the rear sub-frame bolt with an Eagle Mike kit. A better, and more expensive solution for the rear suspension would have been a Cogent Dynamics rear shock.

      im 250lbs tusk large panniers on 2017 klr650. How do you like the top gun when you are fully loaded and also when you are not loaded riding solo any regrets with the top gun?

    • @Tim2Wheels
      @Tim2Wheels  Před 6 lety

      Steveczyk - I weigh about the same. Not really any regrets with the Top Gun spring. It was the economical way to beef up the rear suspension and it help to keep me from bottoming out as much. The best solution would have been a better after market shock, but at the time I could not afford it. If you can afford a Cogent Dynamics, or other high quality suspension, I would recommend it for better overall performance.

    Tim, I like the way your panniers look on the bike. I'm nervous about drilling holes in the wrong place. Can you tell me how far down from the top edge (with lids removed) your top row of holes are? Are the boxes parallel to the top tube on the rack? Are they centered front to back on the brackets? Any suggestions appreciated!

    • @Tim2Wheels
      @Tim2Wheels  Před 7 lety +1

      Ron, Great Question!
      My first attempt was too low for my liking. However, now I have them just right as you see them in this video.
      I have the brackets mounted parallel to the boxes, which mounts them on the bike parallel to the frame. This puts them at a rear high angle when not sitting on the bike, but they level out while riding.
      My top holes are 4.5" (on center) down from the top bent edge of the box (with lid off). That's about 5" from the top of the rubber gasket. The bottom set of holes are 3" up from the bottom of the box. As for horizontal centering, I have the bracket more towards the front of the box at 3.75" from the front edge of the bracket (at the top) to the front edge of the box.
      This will position the boxes nicely if you want to carry a passenger, giving foot room and not too high to interfere with the rear seating area, but not too far back to hit the turn signals.
      Test fit in this position to see if you like it before drilling, but I really like mine in this position. Of course, you should adjust as needed for your use.
      Thanks for watching.
      -Tim

  • @borghi
    @borghi Před 7 lety

    Tim, I just finished installing the pannier racks and looking at your video, my rear brace is in a different location (sits above the license plate). It actually touches the license plate light (which I don't like). Did you revise the rear fender on your bike in this video? I have a 2016 and it is different in the rear.

    • @Tim2Wheels
      @Tim2Wheels  Před 7 lety +1

      Ron Oehler - Yes, I have removed the rear "sub fender" and relocated the plate to the upper fender. The sub fender tends to hit the tire and/or terrain when the suspension bottoms out while off road.

    These are a relaxing install for a Saturday afternoon. I installed mine a couple weeks ago. The first thing I did after the install was to go for a ride after forgetting to latch the lids. I had to backtrack about five miles looking for the missing lid.....It was laying in the right lane and NO ONE had ran over it! Yep, it has some scratches but I don't care.....
    I installed these with the tops even with the factory flat plate that contains the factory tool kit. This maximizes the available area for tying down additional cargo. I use a cargo net and the ROK Straps that I totally recommend with no reservations whatsoever:
    www.amazon.com/ROK-Straps-ROK-10358-Black-Reflective/dp/B00JVAJJNO/ref=sr_1_3?gclid=CjwKCAjwkqPrBRA3EiwAKdtwk8GLbmK1NvXfVhT5kWMvMHh8XzNW-HVdBKop9j7-596pouLc7B3XjRoCNgkQAvD_BwE&hvadid=177556060287&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9033035&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=9227032738490902989&hvtargid=aud-647006051489%3Akwd-159342759685&hydadcr=6583_9585027&keywords=rok-straps&qid=1567207531&s=gateway&sr=8-3
    I get questions and comments.....Everyone likes them. I removed one of them, emptied it and let a BMW rider check out for light it was. He is a convert and a new customer for Rocky Mountain Cycles.
    I'm pleased with these. Good for the price? They are good...PERIOD! My purchasing decision was based on the opinions of T2W and Everride. *THANKS GUYS!*

    Tim, today I will be mounting the brackets to the boxes. I modeled the dimensions you gave me and they are prefect, I used super strong duct tape to adhere the brackets to the boxes and then snapped them into brackets to check the positioning. I'm unclear about putting washers between the brackets and boxes, Is this necessary on this specific install?

    • @Tim2Wheels
      @Tim2Wheels  Před 7 lety

      Ron Oehler - Ron, I'm glad it worked out for you. The washers will help space the box away from the frame. I installed the washers as outlined in the directions and they worked well for my install. As I recall, they provided extras if needed.

    Great review! Do you know if the Tusk panniers can be mounted on another brand of pannier side Cartier (I.e. SW Motech Ebola Side Carrier)? By the way, which brand of motorcycle jack are you using in this video?

    • @Tim2Wheels
      @Tim2Wheels  Před 6 lety

      ericfrazier88 - Yes, if you heve the mounting brackets or connectors to attach to the Tusk boxes for those other racks, you could use the boxes with any racks. The Tusk boxes come with no holes pre-drilled for that reason.
      The Sttrongway motorcycle jack/lift seen in this video was from Northern Tool. It's rated at 1,500 pounds and costs $99.

      Hi Rick,
      My first attempt was too low for my liking.

    • @Tim2Wheels
      @Tim2Wheels  Před 6 lety

      Hi William,
      Both of these boxes are the "Large" (37 Liters). To give you an idea, they are the same width as the handlebars. This size can hold a lot of gear, so if you plan to travel, camp, etc. I recommend the large. If you just want panniers for around your local area, then maybe the smaller size (medium, I think) would be a good size for you. Personally, I don't think the large are too big.
      Thanks for the comment and for watching.

    What are your thoughts on attaching Tusk panniers to a Happy Trails SL rack? I'm thinking of upgrading from my Harbor Freight "aluminum" cases (which actually work surprisingly well but aren't very sturdy. www.happy-trail.com/happy-trails-soft-luggage-systems/sl-side-racks/sl-side-rack-klr650a.html

      They should mount up just fine. The Tusk boxes are not pre-drilled for any particular racks and are meant for "universal" mounting.

    Does this invlove cutting and splicing of the tail lamp wires

    • @Tim2Wheels
      @Tim2Wheels  Před 6 lety

      No, nothing needs to be done to the tail/brake light. The instructions said one of the turn signal wires may need to be extended when moving them back, (using supplied brackets) but I did not have to do that. I had enough extra length in my OEM/stock wiring that I could relocate the turn signals without splicing.

      The "Large" size boxes shown in this video are the same width as the handle bars, so if the bars fit, your panniers will too. However, it would make it more of a challenge when lane splitting/filtering than with no panniers. If you don't need this much storage, there are "medium size" boxes available that would not be as wide. Or you could mix & match by putting a smaller size box on the exhaust side.
