      Hi, Dennis! I’ve been researching blocking timing for about 6 months, and haven’t really found “the answer” that makes sense for me. Your video is great, as is most of the information I’ve learned while researching; however, I play rec leagues in sand & hard court, and I’m 5’5”. I only (attempt to) block when playing on women’s net height. My biggest struggle is timing. I know that I can get my hands and about a quarter to a third of my forearms over the net. I can see that when I’m blocking, but because I have such a short time to get/ keep my hands there during my block, I often am too late and watch the ball go right over my hands at the end of my block. What advice do you have for short blockers?

      @@GumbeauxRoux Good question. If you're late to block, then you are slow to anticipate where you need to be. Know who the hitters are and how they are likely to be set. You need to read the setter. Experiment with going earlier than you think you need to. So, try to be too early sometimes. You need to get a feel of what it's like to be early. Then get a feel of what it's like to be late. Also, at 5'5" don't mess with blocking in the sand (unless you can jump really high). For indoor or grass, I would practice blocking on a lower net. Lower the net 6 inches or a foot and practice jumping and reaching over the net. Have a partner hold a ball above the top of the net and practice surrounding your hands around the ball. The problem most people have is they don't have success repetitions blocking. You need to know what it's like to block. You need successful repetitions. Most of the time in a real game, you hardly ever touch the ball when you block. For example, you could jump 20 times to block and never touch the ball. If you never touch the ball, then you likely haven't learned anything. So, practice blocking on a lower net and have someone hit the ball into your hands. Focus on penetrating the net and angling the ball down into the court. Have the hitter hit high sets and low sets to challenge your timing. Watch the setter, the hitter, and the ball to determine when to jump. Blocking is hard because there is a lot you need to pay attention to. But if you practice, you'll figure it out.

      Dennis Jackson Thank you so much for your speedy reply and your insights. Often, I am the most athletic/ youngest/ best player on my team, and have had some success blocking. I do know, however, that it’s most likely because I’m at the net, and I attempt to block every time the hitter is in a place where the ball can be blocked, so it only makes sense that I have *some* success. Being 5’5” is the WORST, because I want to be a successful blocker, but I know that I’m only getting older and my mobility isn’t going to be what it is forever. Anyway, I will take your advice and do the best I can with experimenting on a lower net, and timing my blocking earlier than I anticipate it should be. Thank you so much again!

    I coach a boys' high school team. We are trying to get our players to "press" when they block. I am looking for 1-3 things that I can tell them to do. I hate telling them, "you're not pressing" but I don't have any specific things to tell them that they are doing incorrectly that keeps them from pressing, like your head is up, or your legs aren't kicking out, etc.

      Record them blocking so they can see what they are doing. Video from along the net to show the net penetration. They got to get a feel of what it's like to do it right. Do a drill where they jump and penetrate the net and touch an object on the other side. Focus on the correct technique for jumping and penetrating the net. After they learn what it feels like, have a coach or player stand on a box on the other side and hit the ball. Focus on perfect repetitions. The goal for the hitter on the box is to get blocked. Have the hitter hit line and have the blocker block line. Then do cross court. Have the blocker focus on correct hand position, angling the ball down into the court. Technique should be the easier part of blocking. The harder part is the timing. After the blocker becomes more comfortable with the block jump technique, penetrating the net, and hand position - start to practice blocking a ball that has been set by the setter. Getting good a blocking is difficult because you must learn to read and anticipate the play of the opponent. Hope this helps.

    How do I stop touching the net on my block ?

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  Před 3 měsíci

      You might try starting with your hands in front of you before you jump. As you squat to jump, be gliding your hands along the net. Focus on having the hands go up then at the end reach over the net. Try to do the same motion each time you block so you become consistent with how you move.

    how to manage to jump at the right time ??

    • @DennisJacksonvts
      @DennisJacksonvts  Před 2 lety +1

      Timing the jump for blocking is difficult if you aren't very good at anticipating the play. Anticipation is a skill that must be practiced. You'll improve from experience. Also, learn the technique for getting in position to block. A good technique for getting in position along with anticipation skills is what you nee for good timing.

      As a follow up, I've found that the ideal timing is to reach your peak just before the spiker makes contact with the ball. This ensures that you cover the most area possible, so even if you don't manage to kill the spike, you limit their attacking routes and make it easier for the receivers. Remember that blocking isn't always about stopping the ball, it's about restricting the spiker.
