  • New Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, is facing backlash after releasing a list of beneficiaries of the COVID-19 relief fund, intended for artists and cultural workers. Chairperson of the South African Guild of Actors Jack Devnarain and former Secretary General of the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa Ayanda Roda weigh in on the issue.

    I am STRONGLY opposed to Gayton McKezie's political positions, BUT in this case he has done EXACTLY what is required of EVERY cabinet minister - there can NEVER be any problem in being transparent about political actions - most politicians seem to forget that WE (THE PEOPLE) have placed them in these privileged positions

    If artists, athletes, etc applied for public funds, then the public has the right to that information. We were so used to things being done behind close doors that even an ethical leader are being criticized for doing what's right.

I think these lists are the small fry.. we need to know who got the millions from all sports departments.. we need to also know what happened to the 500m dollar fifa 2010 legacy fund??? We want to know why administrators get more money than athletes.. we also what to know why certain sports administration stay in positions for life, like Danny jordaan..

    Our country has resources to provide swimming pools and to support Arts n Culture, and Gayton Mckenzie is fighting to give All people better privileges.... Thank you
    However it is important to be humble and Respectful to all human beings. You can mention that you have made X Amount available through better and effective collaboration. I have confidence you can do it and even be our next President.

    Tax payers money every member of parliament should be showing every cent that's spent in their departments G.M. maybe it's you who will change how all the other ministries operate👍 my granddaughter who is 9. years old thinks she is an artist ( all the pictures she draws on the A4 page at school and at home 😊🎉) how about sending her a couple a thousand of rands a month..😊

    What nonsense is my black brother saying, the Minister is entitled to publishing the use of tax payers money. Mockery or not, people need to be held accountable for their actions and the Minister has done a good job. We as the public say, Mr Mackenzie, thank you for showing us who benefited from the government and we don't care what artists think because they never disclosed nor thanked the government for the funds.

    If the data had been analysed and presented in a manner appropriate to the stated claim, there would be no issue. But what McKenzie has done is political grandstanding, and it makes a mockery of a very traumatic period in South Africa.
