I also want to know who wrote that stupid 'joke'. If it was someone working for the Oscars broadcast then they need to be held accountable too.

It was so disgusting to see how Will walk back to his seat after slapping Chris, as he was showing off I am the man and the strange thing is a few weirdos in the audience started cheering and applauding this violent incident! She nailed it. And its not about not being compassionate or not everyone knows there was something else going on there. Chris did not press charges for a reason but it doesn't mean all the ordeal was fine, the academybbasically rewarded violence that night. People are like he was defending his wife and as much as I get it there is a difference between seing your mother getting physically harmed and seeing the pain look on your wife for a joke that was not well received if you ask what it is well its in the level of reaction a man should thus have. He should have blamed himself first for being insensitive by laughing at it right before her amd either talk to Chris after the show or even during it without going to for physical harm but no he went and "chose" the easy way out.
His apology should have been that night or the first thing in the morning when heads have cooled down not after the academy threatens you. That's why people don't think he was sincere.

"Just because you can explain it doesn't mean you can excuse it." YES! Of course his talent and good should not be disregarded, his apology should be heard and he should be given credit for apologising BUT there should be a consequence to assaulting someone on live TV. Chris Rock was incredibly dignified and insightful for the way he handled it. It makes me so mad when an abusers' back story of abuse overshadows or is used to diminish the pain of their current victim. You can have compassion for that but it is not a licence to do at will with no consequence. Chris Rock shouldn't be made to feel shame bc Will Smith can't control himself.

Chris Rock definitely handled the situation extremely well. The years of being a comedian on stage helped him to respond quickly and to continue with hosting. In terms of Will, so odd that he went from laughter to seeing his wife's face and then reacting. I would like to have seen and known just what their exchange was leading up to the huge shift in Will's response. Also would like to hear Jada's response to what happened. Also want to add that it is interesting that we are all recognizing how out of character this is for Will and that we are seeking to understand why he reacted the way he did. It's rare that people seek out the reasons for behaviours which is very important to do in paving a path towards healing for all parties and to help a person to redeem themselves, to take responsibility, and to grow. We can guide people to accountability if we give them the space to do so. No, Will does not deserve to lose his Oscar. That would be cruel and stupid given the decades he has worked so hard to finally earn one.

"selective consequences", the fact that this needs to be reinforced shows how lost too many people are.
Of course there can't be selective consequences, if something is wrong it is wrong and we need to act on it. The fact that bad things do not have consequences is exactly why there is so much suffering and hate going around. It is part of our collective hipocrisy that allows bad elements to get away with everything for "reasons". Humans are not that bad on expressing the ideal world but we suck at implementing it. We need to be constantly reminded of the end goal and how to get there, both are important and do matter to those who will eventually enjoy the fruits of our efforts. It's obvious, and sad, that Will finally reached his breaking point, and not just any breaking point, but the breaking point of a life time of pressure to be the best. And it had to happen on the precipice of potentially losing another Oscar (think Ali, lost to Denzel, and the Pursuit of Happyness, lost to Forest), because the lesson for him is that great. It wasn't about the joke, and it wasn't about defending Jada. The movie, the role, the Oscar nomination, the self-expectation, all presented the perfect environment for the pending explosion, because sometimes it has to be that significant to free you from a lifetime of fear. And folks, he's still in that breaking point right now. It won't pass until he's learnt the lesson the universe has been trying to teach him his whole life. That he is enough. Because an Oscar, a marriage, a profound career, all the fame and wealth in the world, will never be enough. Perfect peace comes from within. And when you have that kind of peace, nothing will ever offend you.

It's not the first time Will Smith has been filmed slapping someone. There is YT clip of him slapping some guy who pranked him with a water spray

53 yr old Will needs to be held accountable. actions have consequences. Chris was making a joke - he wasn’t threatening Jada or even insulting her. it was a professional event on national TV. terribly disgusting that Will felted entitled to assault someone like that.
