Whatever trauma Will Smith experienced as a child has got nothing to do with Chris Rock.
You are 100% correct. Sadly, Chris Rock said the wrong thing at the wrong time and it made Will Smith snap. I truly believe there is something else going on there. I also want to know who wrote that stupid 'joke'. If it was someone working for the Oscars broadcast then they need to be held accountable too.
Yet childhood traumas shape us as adults
@@LisaNYC70 Chris said the wrong thing at the wrong time TO JADA. Will was laughing at the joke originally. Those two have a very strange relationship.
If you were abused, you are much much more likely to agree with Will.
I think that he rightfully smacked Chris Rock.
That strike definitely didn’t hurt.
I don’t see this smack as really a big deal
I think Chris Rock should stay well clear of this violent man. I feel really sorry for Chris. If it was another bad tempered man Will would've tasted his own medicine! It was so disgusting to see how Will walk back to his seat after slapping Chris, as he was showing off I am the man and the strange thing is a few weirdos in the audience started cheering and applauding this violent incident! Will's son too has praised his dad's violent action !chip of the old block!
"Just because you can explain it, doesn't mean you should excuse it". Love that!
Since when the Oscar's became The Source Awards ???
Meh
I love that too!
She nailed it. And its not about not being compassionate or not everyone knows there was something else going on there. Chris did not press charges for a reason but it doesn't mean all the ordeal was fine, the academybbasically rewarded violence that night. People are like he was defending his wife and as much as I get it there is a difference between seing your mother getting physically harmed and seeing the pain look on your wife for a joke that was not well received if you ask what it is well its in the level of reaction a man should thus have. He should have blamed himself first for being insensitive by laughing at it right before her amd either talk to Chris after the show or even during it without going to for physical harm but no he went and "chose" the easy way out.
His apology should have been that night or the first thing in the morning when heads have cooled down not after the academy threatens you. That's why people don't think he was sincere.
I actually agree with this guest for once
*So you think it's okay to assault someone just because you have something going on in your life?? Stop making excuses for the behavior! It's unacceptable. Period* !
"Just because you can explain it doesn't mean you can excuse it." YES! Of course his talent and good should not be disregarded, his apology should be heard and he should be given credit for apologising BUT there should be a consequence to assaulting someone on live TV. Chris Rock was incredibly dignified and insightful for the way he handled it. It makes me so mad when an abusers' back story of abuse overshadows or is used to diminish the pain of their current victim. You can have compassion for that but it is not a licence to do at will with no consequence. Chris Rock shouldn't be made to feel shame bc Will Smith can't control himself.
This has nothing to do with race! A man went up the stage and assaulted another man and therefore should have been kicked out of the Oscars! It’s really that simple 🤦🏽♂️
Thanks!
Thank you! Good God, I’m holding my breath hoping no one brings race into this!
Exactly.
Well said
Whoopi makes everything about race
JIM CARREY’s response to this was absolutely INCREDIBLE! Y’all should be discussing what Jim had to say because he said all facts!
Props to Jim Carrey and John liguazamo for speaking against Jada, will and Hollywood for being morons and hypocrites!!!

@Teresa Marie Has nothing to do with her being a black woman. Let me guess? Black lives matter? Chris Rock deserved that slap in way because he should have never said it.

My eyes welled up when Sonny spoke of Chris. I feel like he may have had a delayed reaction and it wouldn't really hit him (excuse the pun) until he got off the stage. I hope he's okay.
He’s not okay as you wouldn’t be okay! Chris recently went out with one of his Comedian friends that stated that he observed Chris Flinch when he was talking to him And that’s his reflex! This has traumatize this man for life! My heart ♥️ is so broke 💔 for Chris And this really Saddens me! This can really cause a person to go off the Deep Edge! All I could think of is, “people are dying Kim..”
Please, we’re all going through something, we all receive jokes at our own expense, it’s a crime to assault someone because of it. Will is not a victim here and what he did was NOT heroic. He should face consequences, and should issue a better apology to Chris. What a joke..
I feel bad for Chris Rock. After being assaulted, the Academy left Chris Rock dangle in the wind. No one came to help. Then, the audience gave Smith a standing ovation…which sends a sign that they support him. Major props to Rock for being the only adult in the room. Everyone else should be ashamed.
true...not even someone from back stage. but they all came to coddle Will Smith.
This is the part that is the biggest tragedy of the entire spectacle for me. I can only imagine how Chris's family is feeling as the world collectively laughs at what he experienced. What an outrage.
@@robertphillips1791 There is a photo of Denzel Washington talking him. Plus why y'all talking about Chris like he is a baby. Its not like Rocks wife slapped. Plus none of y'all act be saying he should be arrested.
I agree. What is upsetting to see Will Smith walking off the stage felt as if he enjoyed hitting Chris Rock. Still that is inappropriate behavior.
Unless you were there you have no way of knowing any of what was said.
The Academy and Hollywood at large failed Chris Rock. They stood with the bad guy in this situation.

I'm glad Will Smith apologized to Chris Rock. I hope they can resolve this as friends.
I love how Sunny is more grounded, realistic in her views.
That wasn't a genuine apology - it was something he was coached to say by his PR agent. That little "vessel for love" speech he made is how he really feels. It doesn't matter if he had an abusive father, it doesn't matter if he and Chris had prior beef, and it doesn't matter that Jada was balding: you NEVER have the right to hit someone because they say something you don't like. Period.
100%
I grew up in a violent household, you grow up and learn violence is not the way to handle emotions
Because you don't care
A tweet isn’t public like live tv… so far crickets from Will Smith on public apology.
It’s not sincere apology regarding dancing after party. There is footage of Will Smith made fun of bald guy in talk show who had alopecia years ago. Internet doesn’t forget. Now… GI Jane is film not hair loss. The fame makes this family so narcissistic and self centered. Apologize without consequences seems empty words. Teaching youth to get away when you are rich. Reply with humour back, or stay calm and leave. He could have explained it in his winning speech. Since he could have proven his action is resonated with his love salad words.
I really really wish Chris would sue Will. Hit him back where it hurts. Chris is a big fool if he doesn't sue him. I would to the fullest extent of the law.
I don’t understand how you can assault someone on national tv and not be removed immediately from the premises. Instead of removing him they let him come back and receive an award.
That's Hollywood in a nut shell and that's whey I haven't been to a movie in 20 years.

I have lost a lot of respect for Whoopi, she is just 100% defending Will and the Academy. Violence is not acceptable at any level. She is pretty much saying, well you're allowed to snap from time to time. You are not an intelligent woman!
Chris Rock definitely handled the situation extremely well. The years of being a comedian on stage helped him to respond quickly and to continue with hosting. In terms of Will, so odd that he went from laughter to seeing his wife's face and then reacting. I would like to have seen and known just what their exchange was leading up to the huge shift in Will's response. Also would like to hear Jada's response to what happened. Also want to add that it is interesting that we are all recognizing how out of character this is for Will and that we are seeking to understand why he reacted the way he did. It's rare that people seek out the reasons for behaviours which is very important to do in paving a path towards healing for all parties and to help a person to redeem themselves, to take responsibility, and to grow. We can guide people to accountability if we give them the space to do so. No, Will does not deserve to lose his Oscar. That would be cruel and stupid given the decades he has worked so hard to finally earn one.

Ultimately not only was Smith's behavior disgraceful, it was so incredibly dumb. Rock tells a joke, his wife's feelings get hurt, he reacts poorly. Now the joke that was so offensive is being repeated and replayed over and over and over again...

I guess his mom hasn't seen him alot of the years. I don't agreed Will just snapped. Just laughing about the joke moments before the violence is not indicative or in lined with someone who is about to be fed up or had it with all the jokes like Whoopi said. Will is simply doing this base on Jada's reaction. They are both insecure in their relationship and Will is walking on eggshells with Jada.
No Whoopie, "everything that needed to happen, happened" I don't think so. the person who assaulted Chris did not get immediate consequences. You do not wait for a violent act and the offender to get an award and stay in the same room with the victim. I don't think that Chris Rock was given the support by the academy (publicly and immediate after being assaulted) It's disheartening that all the attention is on will and not on the victim.

"selective consequences", the fact that this needs to be reinforced shows how lost too many people are.
Of course there can't be selective consequences, if something is wrong it is wrong and we need to act on it. The fact that bad things do not have consequences is exactly why there is so much suffering and hate going around. It is part of our collective hipocrisy that allows bad elements to get away with everything for "reasons". Humans are not that bad on expressing the ideal world but we suck at implementing it. That's because Will Smith finessed himself into the forefront of receiving sympathy. The tears. The runny nose. The tissues. Whoopi so obviously has her own agenda (with The Academy being a former host of the Oscars). She also protects her friends regardless of the crime (remember the defiance with Bill Crosby) she continued to defend him to the end and would never admit she was wrong. That makes her NOT a fair weathered friend. How would your feel if your friends crapped all over you if you did something stupid like that? Will slapped Chris Rock for the award. He won it. Took it. Partied with it. Had his fill. Now he's sorry. Kinda little too late. Tiktok now having to relive the moment repeatedly over and over. That apology now means nothing. Like that award he just won.
Sincerely, what Sunny Hostin says at the end of this clip made me cry. Thinking of what Chris Rock is feeling… The View panel put effort into deconstructing Will Smith’s motives and emotional triggers. However, we shouldn’t overlook the potential psychological and emotional impacts this will have long-term on Chris Rock. He is being praised for taking the high road that night. But as the trauma settles in - humiliation to his masculinity on a world stage, his family watching him being assaulted, impact to his confidence as a comedian in the future, his inability to feel safe… Will Smith’s behavior should be viewed only as what it was - a VIOLENT ASSAULT! Chris Rock is the ONLY victim. Will Smith should be punished to the maximum possible punishment by The Academy, as this violent assault took place on their terms, on their watch, and under their name.
Chris' ticket sales skyrocketed after that incident
Chris made a whole movie about black women loving hair so much that they wear other women hair and do harsh things to their natural hair to make it better. He meant to humiliate Jada for being bald. Chris is lucky he lives in a country where people think it is normal to make fun of someone's medical condition and disrespect a man's wife. Also, STOP with the assault. Parents slap their kids all the time for saying mean things. Sunny needs to be concerned about how Jada is feeling.
@@teresamarie7460 are u serious? You're as toxic as Jada. That woman made Will's moment ugly! He worked his entire career for that moment just for her to act like she was hurt by a joke she's now saying she doesn't give a rat a$$ about. I hope the academy deals with Will to the highest extent. Such barbaric behavior on a world stage SMH. Very degrading!
@@teresamarie7460 yeah part of what you said I agree with, Chris made that documentary, and what does he think is going to happen? What would anyone think happens if they make a joke about someone's spouse that's very personal, then the male suddenly walks up to you? I mean, I would have ran LOL.

That was such BS...! Nothing happened.
He is not the only person who has had abuse or seen abuse to other family members!!!! Doesn't mean we all go slapping people. You rise above it!!! I do not talk to my father. Once I turned 18 I said NO MORE!
If you tried to remove him, can you imagine what the second scene would have looked like. Chris Rock, what an amazing man.
I WAS a Will Smith fan. I actually bought and read his book. The first thing I thought when he hit Chris Rock was that he was acting like his abusive father. And, I’m sorry, let us not forget what he did to the first Aunt Viv on the Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. Will Smith is NOT a good person. And I believe he should have been asked to leave the Oscars. There is NO excuse for hitting someone. This comes from a person who grew up with the same kind of abusive father. For ME he is canceled. That was DISPICABLE what he did to Chris Rock. And then seeing the news reports of him dancing the night away at the Vanity Fair party. SHAMEFUL. He seriously mental issues. I truly believe that.
I said the same thing the other day!! Look at how he treated original aunt viv!!!!! What one does in public is a small fraction of how one behaves in private. His marriage is also toxic
I think you’re dramatic and we are all human. Everyone cannot walk on water like yourself, Diane. God forbid someone throws you out if you mess up.
I'm still a fan
Despicable and shameful, indeed.
It's also not the first time he slapped someone on camera. The first time (He slapped a fan that gave him a kiss) may have been justified but he's used to getting violent.
Chris Rock took it like an professional throughout. Will’s apology took too long and seemed rather forced. He sadly put a stain on his own reputation already. I hope he gets the professional help he needs.
well it's not right to slap someone and it's not right to make fun of someone who has a disease or health condition etc...i think that Rock doesn't know.

It is absurd that they'd need to explain why the "black" man was taken out of the venue. It would have been obvious why Will Smith should have been kicked out and it has nothing to do with the color of his skin.
He is not sorry , I am applauded Chris received zero support, he is a comedian. Sensitive, really

This was an excellent conversation about the situation, and I really appreciate Whoopi's explanation about why he wasn't escorted out right then.
I'm glad there will be consequences
We all know Will didn’t write that. He’s smart enough and has played this game enough to know when and where he should apologize. He was wrong.
Seen right thru it.
I disagree, I think he wrote it.
He should've apologised on camera, not written apology cos it can be taken as someone else wrote it.
I'm certain that it was written by his team of lawyers, agents, and PR. They told him, if we don't write this, you'll never work again. You'll have to put up all the money for any projects you are in.

@Mira M Chris complimented her. He did not compare her to something bad. She looked great! She is not fully comfortable about it though and she does not have to be. She had a right to roll her eyes. If Chris knew she was sensitive about it, he should not have joked about it but he did not say anything bad about her
Imagine if Will Smith was a white actor slapping Chris.
We would have a different story by now.
I'm shocked to see black people supporting Will.
Hypocrite
The fact that the police won't do anything without a police report from Chris even though we all witnessed an assault. The fact that they let Will take an award after an assault and talk longer than anyone. The fact that he got a standing ovation for apologizing to everyone except for the person he attacked during his speech. The fact that Karen Whoopi Goldberg is on the board deciding the non consequences and all the rest should say everything everyone needs to know about who these people are at their core.

There is the answer in your on words. "Years of living a dangerous life". He didn't live YEARS of a dangerous life and never learned. I like Will Smith and still do. I like Chris Rock. I am sad that this happened. Now I hope things can calm down and the situation handled properly.

I wish they had spoken more about Chris Rock. He was bullied as child, and now as an adult.
1:10 Mother says "...that's the first time I've ever seen him... go off. The first time, in his lifetime."

"Just because you can explain it, doesn't mean you should excuse it." Spot on. I agree 100% with Sunny and Tara.
I thought of his mother and how devastated she would have been to see that. If I was his mother I would be very concerned. My theory is that the nonsense that has gone on between him and his wife has filled him with repressed anger and a very bruised ego and although he was laughing at the joke, when he saw her reaction to it all that repressed anger and bruised ego burst out of him. I'll bet his mother knows this.
Even sadder is if his hitting someone reminded his mother of Will’s father.
I wonder what Chris's mother's reaction was to seeing her son publicly assaulted and the perp celebrated afterwards.
well it's not right to slap someone and it's not right to make fun of someone who has a disease or health condition etc...i think that Rock doesn't know.
Will Smith tarnished the whole Oscar show and the achievement from every people including himself from his barbaric assault!
Here's the thing...why agree to an open marriage and try to appear 'sexy and edgy' as a couple if your feelings are gonna get hurt. You put your business 'out there' and people will comment! Right or wrong, people will say something. Don't get made when folks say something offensive. That's what Will Smith did and it was shameful to watch. Folks like feeling down, shaking their heads and feeling bad for Chris. There is no excuse for this at all. None. Will was not defending Jada. She's very capable of defending herself.
Sunny makes a very good point about Chris Rock being a victim. And I love Whoopi but there is no excuse that explains Will Smith not being immediately escorted out of the building.
Agree!
Whoopi was just explaining what happened. She doesn't control what goes on at the Oscars.
@@LisaNYC70 exactly
@@LisaNYC70 She's on the Board of Governors of the Academy. She didn't control what went on live but she definitely has influence over the consequence and any future operational changes of the show.
I feel at this point she personally knows something about the Academy's side of things, or she is deeply personal with Will Smith. Maybe both. And that's fine. But she is being way too soft on him.
It's obvious, and sad, that Will finally reached his breaking point, and not just any breaking point, but the breaking point of a life time of pressure to be the best. And it had to happen on the precipice of potentially losing another Oscar (think Ali, lost to Denzel, and the Pursuit of Happyness, lost to Forest), because the lesson for him is that great. It wasn't about the joke, and it wasn't about defending Jada. The movie, the role, the Oscar nomination, the self-expectation, all presented the perfect environment for the pending explosion, because sometimes it has to be that significant to free you from a lifetime of fear. And folks, he's still in that breaking point right now. It won't pass until he's learnt the lesson the universe has been trying to teach him his whole life. That he is enough. Because an Oscar, a marriage, a profound career, all the fame and wealth in the world, will never be enough. Perfect peace comes from within. And when you have that kind of peace, nothing will ever offend you.
Wow, very movingly stated. 🖤
An abuser does NOT simply decide to show himself at an Academy award ceremony where he is slated to win the BIG prize, he's already shown himself many, many times...we just weren't there to see it.

I don’t agree wholeheartedly on the way he carried himself but he was also justified, as this is the woman he married and loves the most in his life, and for someone to make fun publicly, on television, globally, and forever documented for anyone to watch and also make fun of his wife’s struggles in life is a serious and unacceptable action.
