This Hack Turns Any Phone into a Black Light to Spot Microbes | Fake Science

  • Who would want to have millions of viruses and bacteria scattered around their bathroom? Not me! By a happy chance, it looks like there is a simple trick to check for microbes, and all you need is a phone with a flashlight and a bit of fake science. Viral videos claim that everyone can make blacklight by just colouring a flashlight with Sharpies. Blacklight is invisible to the human eye. But it can be absorbed by certain substances that contain phosphors, which convert ultraviolet light into glowing light. Body fluids are those substances as well as neon markers. This "DIY blacklight" does make neon markers glow in the dark, but just a little bit and only when you are very close. I could not make any microbes glow with it at all. When I used a real blacklight torch (you can see that clip at the very beginning of my video), all my marks were brightly glowing in the dark. All in all, this video includes a fake blacklight torch and fake viruses and bacteria.

Clickbait is specifically banned in CZcams's TOS. I hope you get a channel strike for this.
Blacklights work by emitting UVA light, whereas your phone's flash emits white light. The white light that is in the LED on your phone is made by combining blue light (450-470nm wavelength) with phosphor. The phosphor changes part of the blue light to yellow light (580-590nm wavelength.) This combination of blue and yellow together create white. On the other hand Ultraviolet wavelengths that are used for blacklights, and cause fluorescence range from 400nm wavelength (UV-A) and lower. So, no matter how many color filters you want to put over your flash, you won’t be able to change your white lite emitting phone into a fluorescence revealing black light.

Did you even bother to read the video description? Or did you just blindly comment based on the title.
The entire point of this video is disproving the idea you can turn your phone into a uv light. He shows trying the “phone hack” which does not work and then shows what it looks like using an actual uv torch.

So what’s fake? The blacklight or the bacteria on the walls or both? Does the blacklight hack actually work like a blacklight?
