    A pipe resonated marimba is something I haven't built before but a customer asked for one so I got the chance. I've built a few box resonated marimbas but it was a nice change to make a different one.
    The pipe resonated marimba is exactly the same as the box resonated one all but the resonation. One uses the box the other uses pipes. The frame, legs, bars etc are the same. The pipes produce a superior sound but the box marimba is a little easier to make and still sounds great.
    This video shows making of the pipe section of the marimba, if you want to make one for yourself then my past video shows the rest of the build. Also you will need to purchase the book with the plans to get the needed dimensions. You can get the book here www.beatinpathp...
    It really is a fun build that I highly recommend!

    Hey! Professional classical cellist here. It makes my heart so full to see her playing that marimba and having such a good time. I hope she keeps playing to her heart's content for as long as she wants to play. Women who play percussion are a force of nature. I hope that if your little one decides to pursue music and that's what makes her happy, she finds that same power and strength that gets so many musicians out of bed in the morning. She's got promise.

    Thanks for making this. I have seen and heard a local marimba band at a few outdoor fests in recent years. I noted the buzzing of their marimbas and knew there had to be an add-on such as you demonstrated, a loose diaphragm element similar to that used in kazoos. Thank you for solving this mystery for me.

    • @BruceAUlrich
      @BruceAUlrich Před 7 lety +2

      I do too. I used to do some trim carpentry years ago and the long time cabinet maker taught me that trick. If you just flex the blade a little, it takes of about 1/16" of an inch. If you make it flex a lot, it is closer to 1/8". (Not sure in metric) It is handy!

      @PaskMakes  Před 7 lety

      Thanks Ben! The buzzer certainly does produce a different sound - my daughter wants me to build her one now but we haven't the space for a second marimba. :)

    • @bnlm
      @bnlm Před 7 lety

      It would be perfect if you could swap between the box and the pipes with the same marimba :D
      And by the way, doesn't the buzzer "detune" (I don't know if that's a word) the pipe by changing the size of the hollow space ?

    • @PaskMakes
      @PaskMakes  Před 7 lety +1

      I could pull the box out of the one we have and replace it with pipes but I'm not sure when I would get around to that. It's a good question on the buzzers - after checking they didn't seem to affect the tuning of the pipes but the bottle caps really don't go in very far (they are fairly flush with the inside of the pipe.

    Great build and great to see your number 1 tester hard at work. I did wince a bit at one point though - I know you were only using a pin nailer, but when shooting the holders into the end of the frame, your bits were right behind in the firing line. Not much chance of shoot through I suppose, but still made me cross my legs - not sure I would want to do that with a bigger nailer! :-) Anyway great video!

    Although I was very impressed with your previous model to me this is more recognisable as a Marimba. What’s next, a full five octave Marimba or a vibraphone? I think the latter would be more challenging so you must go for that one. Your daughter (?) is brilliant, I wouldn’t even be able to see the notes that quickly never mind play them!

    I have no experience with making marimbas but I am a percussionist and I do know that traditional African marimbas(which have much less keys and have dried gourds as resonators) use beeswax to make the buzzing sound. from what I remember they just put a dab(coin sized) on the bottom of the resonator(gourd.) Might be worth a try! Either way, sounds great and I always enjoy your videos!

      The beeswax is the equivalent of his "glue tack", which holds the membrane. In Africa, they use things like spiders' eggs membranes, pig intestine skin, ox stomach lining, etc. for the membrane.

    At 5:00, looks like you're adding a kazoo effect. When you cross drill the pipe, and insert the buzzer assembly, the pipe's volume changes. Have you tuned a pipe assembly, then added the buzzer, then tested the tuning and found the tuning changed much?

      Thanks Greg! At 1:57 I'm putting a coat of water based polyurethane but anything could be used. Yes I tested the pipes after adding the buzzers and it seemed to make little to no difference - the buzzer doesn't go in very far, it's actually fairly flush with the inside of the pipe. :)
