  • Welcome to the penultimate episode of Fratello Talks in 2023. Before wrapping up the year, we thought we’d do a little bit of housekeeping. So today, Nacho, RJ, and Lex are here to bring you a watch market update. Before settling into the holidays, it’s good to look back at the year we’ll soon be leaving behind. And one thing that really caught our eye is the current shift in the state of the watch market. The prices of new watches have grown like never before, playing catch-up with the over-inflated pre-owned market. Now, as the latter softens, we reach a tipping point. There will be winners, and there will be losers.

An excellent discussion, gents. Honest, reasoned and accurate. I think the true watch enthusiast has no desire to see brands in trouble or 'the collapse of the market,' but brands got greedy in the pandemic's aftermath - believed their own hype and blundered into unsustainable price rises and bloated, whimsical catalogues, even as the market soured. Hubris is a painful thing - just as the brands had dug themselves out of their discounting, they're about to find themselves right back in it. This will be a hard winter for ADs, brands and speculators.

Excellent chat! Loved the perspective on watches under 1k, how the major brands have left that space and it's now dominated by Tissot / Seiko and micros. I think under 2k, the killer sleeper watches to look for? pre-owned Tudor.

Excellent content, guys! I wonder what will happen to the vintage market. You can see vintage speedies are going very slow and same goes for vintage Rolex. While C24 prices have not gone down too much, it seems not much is selling anymore. Same watches for months and sellers are trying to keep the prices up.

The Longines resurrection has been fascinating. Not a few years ago, Longines was anchored below $2k. Now we consider Longines fantastic values at $3k-$4k. Also, we also forget about Nomos. Super values $2k-$4k. Also, I'm glad you mentioned the disappearance of the middle class. Watch Tudor as they evacuate from the "middle class" and slowly move up in price to target the affluent. Fun stuff, great discussion.

Great discussion as always! Especially halfway through when talking about buying watches that we can save up for vs. brands that are increasing their prices, and Rolex money being secured. I don’t mind buying used but I’ve been frustrated these past few years with speculators manipulating the market. Spot on gents!

Very interesting talk. For some people exciting times are ahead. For example people who like Rolex watches for what they are and can actually buy them now. Or people who don't need the AD buying experience and buy some brands below retail, as it was just 5 years ago.
Regarding brands in trouble, I guess that JLC will take a hard hit. They lost quite some creditability by increasing their prices way too fast and too high.

Prices, versus turnover. You say sales, how does chrono24 measure sales. I thought it was more of a “for sale” place. Where the transaction is done outside chrono24. Are there less turnovers?

No, that’s incorrect. These days, the transaction takes place on Chrono24. So the info is based on the actual transactions…

Interesting discussion. Just 2 mo later - GER, GBR, and JPN officially in recession. Almost certainly more to follow. Weekly layoffs here in the US. Yet Chrono24 and eBay prices for Rolex steel sports watches not budging much. Same watches languish for months.
Ironic that the 1 brand that could raise their prices on many popular models (steel sports) $2k and still sell them all and kneecap the flippers and make true watch fans happy- Rolex - doesn’t.
