The MoonSwatch is...ugly? Dead? Why is the MoonSwatch so popular? Why does it keep breaking? Well Michael kinda answers all of that but at the same does he doesn't really answer anything. He does however come up with an idea for a Moonswatch that he thinks the community would LOVE. I happen to also think he's right (this is Michael typing this). So tune in today and find out what exactly happened with the MoonSwatch and what Omega and Swatch will do going forward!

Instead of a Moonswatch, I bought the polished steel Lunar Pilot on the Nylon nato strap. It was only a couple bucks more than a Moonswatch. Feel like my money was well spent. I absolutely love this thing.

I'll have to look into that. Swatch does have a couple models that look remarkably like a Speedmaster and I was going to get one of those, but they're either out of stock or only sold at a Swatch store. I'll check out the LP. Maybe it'll scratch the Omega itch until I can get an authentic Speedmaster, which by the way, is (for some reason) just about the worlds only unclonable watch.

They really should have used Aluminum for this watch, anodized for color. They used to make Irony chronographs out of Al, which I own, and it's a tough, lightweight little beauty.
Acrylic crystals are perfectly fine, they just gotta make sure it's well water sealed and thick enough to allow countless sessions of using Polywatch.

I waited in line at the SF store with my wife on launch day for over 18hrs. We both walked away with watches and made new friends - it was a memorable experience that as a watch nerd, I'm grateful that I was able to be a part of. I still wear my Mission to Neptune often, though it did make my wrist blue a couple of times.
Ironically, it's already had better reliability than my previous Moonwatches. My first Moonwatch broke after 3 months. Omega took so long to service it that they agreed to give me a new one. The new watch had the same issue after a month. My Mission to Neptune somewhat fills the space that the Moonwatch used to have in my collection, and more importantly, it's still working flawlessly.

Man it is a big time success! It’s a watch even muggles we’re interested in & lined up to wait for; it made the papers and continues to make the papers even months later! Some watch geeks got their knickers in a twist over it 😜 but if we are playing the big game, the long game… big success!

Someone needs to make an aftermarket case for the Moonswatch (sorta similar to those aftermarket steel Royal Oak outer cases for 8 sided G-shocks). That would achieve exactly what you laid out.

To quote Nick Hayek (Swatch Group CEO) from an interview with Fratello: "It’s a carefully produced Swiss Made watch and not a commodity." I think we're living in a time where reality no longer matters, things become true if you repeat them often enough. I wonder whether the low quality was a deliberate decision.

It was supposed to be an inexpensive fun casual watch with brand heritage from Omega x Swatch that SHOULD have been easily accessible to the mass market and yet it inevitably wasn't... so that's a massive failure on their part.
I can think of other of great brands/watches I can get for the same money that I can actually get easily and won't even have to go to the secondary market and pay these ridiculous prices for a fucking cheap plastic watch.

Well, omega didn’t really emulate anything 8:15. It’s a swatch collab produced by their swatch division, marketed by their swatch division and sold by their swatch division. Assuming these companies operate through a Chinese wall model, all omega would be concerned about is getting the design right.
So it’s fair to say swatch fucked up not really omega.

I just got a used Speedmaster on Chrono24. Yeah, it was pricey, around $4000 after sales tax, Chrono24's own collection tool is estimating that is it worth $1100 more than I paid for it. I love videos like this: you hate it because you can’t get one, and sharing a few anecdotal reports of quality issues reported online which get a ton of airplay from Watch influencers making it seem like they all are trash….but Swatch has a good warranty and they can be returned/replaced. Keep in mind, $260 is basically a “round of drinks” - so who cares anyway? It’s a fun novelty of a watch. Should not be compared with a $7,900 ceramic automatic. My wife has been wearing a “Mission to Earth” in regular rotation with her IWC Portuguese, Omega Constellation, & JLC Reverso for a couple months and there’s not a scratch on this thing…

I disagree. You can not roast the Moonswatch like that just because there was an isolated situation with one of the chrono push buttons. Thinking of sueing Omega or Swatch because you could even if you do not want to? Unfair comment. I have two store purchased Moonswatches and care is equal to any swatch, perhaps a little more as bioceramic is strong but brittle. Thinking of sueing Omega is like thinking on sueing Rolex for your broken Explorer when it suposedly can stand the most brutal usage under extreme conditions. Some objectiveness please.

In the UK the university student union bars get the biggest discounts from the breweries, they almost pay cost price. Their theory is that if you can get someone drinking their beer for their first three years of drinking ( 18 years is legal here) then they will drink that beer for the rest of their lives.
Swatch just put thousands of watches on the wrists of young people who never wore a watch before and who’d never been in a watch store. And what watch do you think they’d be most likely to buy in ten years when they’ve got some real money. Meanwhile, sales of the real Speedmaster have increased and used prices have risen in a declining market. It’s genius. 🤩

Is the quality of moonswatch a widespread issue or isolated exception example(s)? Agree needs to be durable at £250. All up whilst I don’t own one and don’t plan to, I do think it’s net positive having launches that capture the wider imagination of the broader non-watch enthusiast community. It’s an entry point. It’s also a fun alternative to luxury watches without the risk of wearing them out.
Key point though is how widespread are the quality issues in reality

What Swatch/Omega should have done was made a System51 version of the Seamaster Aqua Terra.
The Sistem51 movement already have date function so they don't have to make a new movement.
Just the Aqua Terra case but in a more affordable price point.
    Like 400-500 $.
That might also have get customers on to the Seamaster collection.

I still think the Moonswatch from a marketing point of view is brilliant and edgy (still now in September 2022). Yes, Swatch Group as whole and Omega need to capitalize on this. For maximum impact they should have two moves planned:
    - General mega (re) release of the Moonswatch in store and online with numbers to support demand late November/early December in time for the Christmas rush (remember when Apple sold us all iPod Minis in all different colors for Christmas?)
    - Launch limited edition runs of actual Omega Moonwatches in all the different colors that have been used in the Moonswatch - people will go nuts!
It's not been all plain sailing and I think Swatch Group were expecting success, but not the all out frenzy we've seen - they still have the might as a group to capitalize on this. As this easy entry point gets more people into the hobby and drives interest in watches, more people are likely to want the real thing, so this is a short and a long term strategy for them.

Maybe I’m not deep enough into this obsession we all share because I was never interested in the idea of a plastic speedie.
To me watches are meant to symbolize some achievement or be a source of pride. That doesn’t mean for others, like “look at me” as some status symbol, but rather something that YOU can feel good about when you look down at your wrist. And a plastic homage to something better would feel like less a source of pride and more a source of disappointment… IN MY OPINION.
Please also keep in mind this is coming from someone who realistically will never be able to afford a Speedie. So my position is not one of snobbery or privilege, my watch journey will always be one filled with a couple good quality less expensive pieces (never thousands of dollars on any one piece), while enjoying the higher art and technology from a far.
-With respect, and all the best.

My sistem 51 is a very nice $230 automatic. It's held up perfectly well under normal use and I recommend them to anyone wanting something different. It's a shame SWATCH blew it with the Omega colab.

Given the progression of their products, I guess the next big thing will be a buggy app that costs $100 to download with a monthly subscription fee.

Swatch in the 90s made decent kids watches inspired by art. Now it’s low quality, mediocre designs and they’re really reaching to be cool again. They should stick to their roots and reach out to artists And do limited runs.

Was excited when the moon swatch was announced. But all the drama and the apperent build quality makes me never want one and even make me want a speedmaster less than before.

How about you do an episode about moonswatch alternatives ? Omega Speedy Date can be bought these days for 1300-1500$ or for a bit more you can find panda variants. Why pay 600 for plastic toy on ebay when you can save for a real Speedy ?

    The MoonSwatch?
Loved it, got annoyed by it, had a revival of love for it, back to being annoyed by it. Ready to just buy a cheap Chinese copy of it for $30 now. (As if it’s possible to be any more cheaply made). The fact they never released them on line killed any future for people to trust SwatchWatch or anything they ever claim in the future.
And as far as swatches in general, yes they are better. As someone who was in highschool when they got popular in the states, I knew girls on the tennis team who had multiple and wore the same ones through all 4 years of HS & while competing. Swatch Watches are generally not crap, MoonSwatch Swatch Watches definitely seem to be.

Honestly, I think they went too cheap by forcing themselves into the current Swatch price range. Give me a Hamilton quality MoonSwatch with those amazing colors, and you have a winner that would still not undermine the original Moonwatch.
Ultimately, what makes these watches unique/novel to the actual Moonwatch? It's 3 things: price, quality of materials, and the colors. Those are what they needed to hit to be successful. They missed the second because they were too stingy on the first. Think they need to make a second go of it, but they shouldn't limit themselves to exactly the same Swatch price point. Improve the materials by raising the price into the $500-600 range. At that price point, they can go to a cheaper in-house Eta movement (in-house to the Swatch Group), make the external materials decently better, and still be novel with their color options. It's quite a bit more expensive than the $250 price point, but with that pricing headroom you can start to get at Hamilton quality. It'll also help to elevate the Swatch brand to a higher price point.

Solid perspectives. Although some people could break anything. Some upping the price point to the ~$500 level probably wouldn’t help.
👍 on the Zenith Shadow! Forget the Speedmaster - that’s much cooler.

This played out perfectly fort Omega. If the Swatch is a POS, it makes the big daddy Moonwatch look even better. What we saw some serious hype around multiple never before seen variants of an iconic design.
Now imagine part 2 of this whole experiment being the limited release of Moonwatches with manual movements in ceramic cases with all the fun colors. They'd have a serious hit on their hands imo.
