We live in Bulacan province and try to stay around 500USD a month for a family of 4. We were able to buy our house so we don't have rent, HOA, mortgage. Our bills are 5k to 6k for electric. 2200 for internet, 700 for water and we try to keep groceries under 15k. So monthly we have been around 24k pesos.
Thanks for sharing my friend
Hi @mae what does HOA mean?
Home Owner's Association
Medellín temperature range 60 to 85 all twelve months. Electrical Power and internet equal or better than USA. One hour of power interruption in past 2 years. Two hospitals with equipment and facilities equal to the best medical care in the USA at less than 1 / 3 of USA prices. Better than St Luke’s in BGC, Manila.
Sharing my monthly budget here in Luzon, in case it's informative for others:
- Food, staples, soap, dog food, grocery store, utenciles, etc.. => $1,500.00
- Eating out => $100
- Internet => $50.00
- Rent (2 bdrm 1 bath townhouse apartment with gate) => $160.00
- Visa extension => approx $25.00
- Electric => $100 to $150/mo depending on aircon use
- Water => $10 month
- transportation => $20.00
- buying data "loads" for phones => $10 month
Ends up being around $2000/mo total
thanks
The Philippines is no longer the cheap retirement destination that is proclaimed especially if a guy is taking care of an unemployed gf/wife who has children, family, and extended family. A single guy can have a great life if he chooses an area of the Philippines that best matches his hobbies for obvious reasons. Obtaining a decently employed Filipina without kids in one's chosen area of settlement is difficult as it does take a lot of patience, but it is achievable.
thanks for sharing
I would disagree. The key is having a reliable income. $2k/mo residual income is more easily achievable today than in any time in history. And you can have an amazing life in PH with that.
If the Phillipines is no longer cheap then where do you consider cheap? From What I see it appears very cheap. Where else can you live a comfortable middle class life, with mostly modern infrastructure, paying rent for a decent place, supporting a partner and giving some money to her family all for under $2000? That's a serious question....Do you know how many places you can do that?
I do not know any country that didn't inflate its own currency. If PH didn't inflate its own currency, the domestic market will be slowly crippled against the heavily inflated USD, and weakens it's trade exports out of the country. US has been exporting it's cheap dollars for real goods, just to have its middle class afloat of receiving a foreign cheap products. Back then US created a middle class through its own industrial revolution. Now, US created a middle class by exporting cheap money and consuming cheap foreign products.
@@ariefraiser140 ..read the OP's comment. He said it is cheap IF you're not taking care of a GF/wife (and her family), and he's right. I'm a US expat living in the Phil, and it is feasible to live here on $1500-$2k a month, BUT that's if you're not helping others much. Food is my biggest expense here, since I will help out her family in that regard. Asians, especially Filipinos, eat a crap ton of rice.
thanks for the time share your budget. always good to see a realistic budget video. sometimes other vloggers leave out a lot.
Thanks for watching!
Good video guys, god bless..notification bellllllllllll 😅😅😅

I live about a 3 hours drive from Manila. I pay out around $USD 3000 a month, $400 of which is pure indulgence on beer and cigarettes for myself. My wife and I own our house, plus 3 other residential properties and 2 commercial properties from which we garner an income. It's good to have a budget, but it's even better not to bother about money. Feel free to call me a di*k but I worked my butt off for this existence.
no way..god bless you work and now you enjoy you life...you earner it my friend
@@mikesphilippineretirement Yeah, I suppose so. Thanks, Mike. I've been shot, stabbed, slashed and chopped all over the world in my pre-retirement life so now, when my only exertion is having a few San Migs with the boys at the trike stand, I feel pretty secure. We live in Rizal province, by the way. Haven't seen more than two foreigners in 3 years.

Hello my friend. Can I ask how much of your income comes from your real estate investments (commercial and residential properties)? Thanks.
I am a retired single veteran and I will be traveling to the Philippines in Sep 2023 for the first time. The purpose of the trip is to figure out if I can retire in the Philippines. Dumaguete, Valencia and Cebu province are the areas I'm looking to visit with a budget of $2000 per month. Your budget video was very helpful. I would be interested to meeting you guys and get your thoughts on the Dumaguete area
No problem contact me on fb
We moved here in 2013 and established our budget at $1,600... with no housing costs (we own our home) which gave us a lot of breathing room for doing other things. Since that time, our costs to maintain that same lifestyle here is closer to $2,000. Keep in mind we have our own transportation (gas & maint) and we fully air-condition our home. We basically want for nothing... except peace and quiet, which is almost impossible here. Good vid! 🌴😎
thanks

Hello Mike/Janet, very good overview, you two seem to live a pretty normal comfortable life and still "save" which is key in the event of an outlier situation this would obviously minimize any impact on your daily budget making a recovery from some sort of emergency much easier, very good.
Yes we live a normal life here
Hey now this is a much more positive video in contrast to the scam one. And mike your partner seems like a real apple of the eye. Lol
My monthly budget is 60,000 pesos per month. 30,000 fixed expenses. No rent, electric 4,000 cignal and wifi 6000 per mo. Hoa fees for subdivision including water,4000 per month. Food is the rest plus money for her family,something always comes up.Welcome to the Philippines!! Basically I withdraw 60,000 pesos per month and thats what we live on.
so if someone adds 15k to that budget to include rent...about 75k PHP or 1500 USD does that sound about right?
Yes thats about right.we could withdraw that much,but my wife and I leave it in my account for savings,just in case!
Plus I have $50,000 in a bank in the Philippines in my wifes account in case of a medical emergency as I'm nevet going back to the states and I'm 69 years old, thats enough for hospital and to bury me God forbid,but i am realistic,and the rest is for her thats 50,000 dollars
@@dennisbaker412 That's awesome! Gotta looks out for the young ladies!
You can't rent a 1 bedroom apartment for that here in the U.S.
just a suggestion, instead of putting your money in a savings account (where you actually lose money) open a COL account and buy dividend stocks. Think about buying a house for the money you are spending you could buy instead of rent. If you guys are married get a 13a visa its cheaper, no trips out of the country are required and it is a lifetime visa. I have been here 21 years and never left the country.
some good advice
Best and cheapest way to buy homes and properties, buy up bank foreclosures or land at city auctions where taxes were overdue and land was seized by the city or province. This is how we purchased land at 33 pesos per sqm and now valued at 300 pesos per sqm. A 10x profit, be savy and you can find your dreams and treasures are right in front of you.
Great update Mike and Janet! Love all of your Videos, and share them with my GF in Guihulngan City also. She likes them also, and talk about the content together.👍👍
Great to hear Steve
You guys set yourself above most other vloggers talking about budgets by the on- screen display of peso and dollar conversions; in an easy to read corner of the screen during the talk.
Trying to follow all these numbers verbally while trying to make the conversions in your head while they’re speaking it’s almost a lost cause for the viewer. So in speaking about numbers it’s extremely helpful to at least show them on the screen. But better yet it would be cool to show the list added to on the screen, or a whiteboard so we can see how the expenses compare.
In any case thanks for the extra effort here! Most dont do it.
thank you I am learning every video to improve things
hi Mike, This is Kiki In The Philippines. Your budget is right on. Good job. I just finish watching your video in Cebu with John. Great show. Tell Janet I rang the Bell 🤣
I heard an expat say to base my budget on 50 peso to the dollar before I move to the PI. He said that's a pretty safe number as far as he was concerned. Any exchange rate above 50 peso is gravy. He's been living in the PI for 6 years.
I use the rate I get when I exchange my money...this month i got 54,7 to 1 it changes everyday
yes thats a good number -i go by that too devide subtract add multiply -i've been here off and on 17 years or so and it's been as low as 47 per 1 usd
Another good video bike you always have great information for those of us who are learning. I’m grateful to you sharing this knowledge with us keep it coming. God bless you buddy.
I appreciate that!
$3,000 monthly expenses, for food, gas, parlor, eating out, giving to others… no mortgage, no car payments, but with a beach house maintenance a/c’s and other appliances such as dryer/ washer, glass windows and repainting of the house, house helpers… very comfortable budget for two. Instead of living retiring in Florida which is double the amount and have to watch every penny. Niiiiice seeing you Mike with your new love/ wife, I’m glad to see you happy. Blessings to you and Janet.
Thanks! Thanks Mike and Janet for sharing..super helpful. The break down and format was easy to follow while creating a template. Good Video Thanks guys.

Hi Mike, thanks for the update. I still rate the transparency of your budget as solid, i still see new and established creators promoting micro budgets.I am sure they do it for views, more views more you tube revenue. The whole world revolves around money I don’t blame them I just don’t contribute to their viewership as much. My pension doesn’t have a cola adjustment, they “gift” a 13th check. For new employees the 13th check has been written out, I’m grandfathered in for the 13th. The war on the working class has made me an economic refugee.
sad and true

Thanks for the info. You guys have that Penn / Teller (magicians) vibe going on where Teller doesn't talk at all and Penn does 100% of the talking. sort of cool.
Always learn from these and like how the writing is in top right corner. I arrive this year and like to be around $2200 a month as average to keep saving like you smartly advise. Probably end up with single Mom, so will need to factor it in. Best guess at this time is about a 5.5% SSN increase for next year.

We build our house in mindanao its done but we havent seen it. Were going home in Sept. excited to see the new house. My husband is going to retire thise year so we disided to come home and see what business we can do. Thinking about building appartment since we have some rental homes here in the US. Maybe were just going back and forth between US and Philippines since our kids and grandkids are here. Well see what things comes up during the visit.
Have a great retirement and enjoy your new home
Yes, i agree the prices have increased there in your area, well it's just about everywhere, but Manila and the surrounding areas are even more expensive, don't think it would be possible on a budget of $1700 though, but it was an interesting budget breakdown. Do you think living in a city with many expats seems to help in the price increases, I'm thinking of the locals many of whom doesn't have that type of income, I'm thinking they must have it harder.
we spend money so people make more ..we eat at local places and they hire locals bc of increased business...we use local labor local supplies...and the home we rent they can not afford or are interested in renting..I live a peaceful and relaxed life here in Dumaguete..it is more layed back here
In my opinion, the smartest way to budget is to use the worst exchange rate in the last 18 months. That way you have a better than 50/50 chance of being able to afford life with the inevitable currency fluctuations. If your budget is tight at the current or highest rate in the last 18 months, you are almost certainly going to have difficulty when the exchange rate changes.
i us USD bc that is what my income is in..and when i transfer it to pescos
that is the numbers no matter what the exchange rate is my budget is in USD and I just adjust the budget
@@mikesphilippineretirement I think you may have misunderstood my comment. If you say your budget is 1000 USD when the exchange rate is 58 pesos to the dollar, if the exchange rate drops to 50 pesos your $1000 USD will give you 8000 less pesos per month when you exchange. For most people that could be a problem because instead of needing 1000 to meet their expenses they would need 1160 usd to have the same buying power in pesos. So the budget is only one piece of the puzzle while the other piece is exchange rate.
@@lancemided3251 No, your reasoning is wrong. Mike gave the correct answer. Your budget is 1000. You cannot make that 1200. No other option than adjust your spending budget to what the exchange rate gives you.
@@hansreynders6853 i understand your point of view. I hope you can understand my point of view also. i wasn’t saying Mike was wrong or that I was correct. I said “in my opinion” which means that it works best for me, not you or Mike or anyone else. I have met English people that had to leave Thailand because the dropping exchange rate against the British pound made it unaffordable for them. That is what made me want to comment.
Thank you for Cost of Living update 😊❤

Happy to hear how you trust you spouse with the budget money and savings. I've been married 41 years and my lady just gets it when it come to helping handle the money and budget. Thank you guys for everything.
Thank you for your comment
A little off topic or extra info but, My lady is otherwise unfortunately, not everything, but most things are a "need" its very hard to deal with and arguments dont go well especially when u have a child already and you live with family. You kind of have no ground to stand on where you have some power with good sense, not like a cowboy but just common sense. Getting many of these Filipinas to understand is very challenging, and also facebook is a huge issues in the Philippines since it is used for almost all forms of business, school, and work communication, so you will always be distracted by crap messages, social media, tik tok shorts etc. Scary and real.
If I were to retire in the Philippines, my budget would be $2,500 - $2,700. I know medical insurance will be expensive as well as rent in the bigger cities. But, thanks for your budget information. It's very helpful.

In 2020 rents shot up all over the US. $1500 would get you a 1 bedroom apartment in Orlando FL. Back in 2014, one could rent a 2 bed and bath home for only $1000 in the same area. You got out at the right time for $425 a month would not even rent you a dog house in most places in the US.

I can imagine if your not owning a house. But if you have own house even just a little one, you can saved. 35,000 pesos is our monthly. We own our house.
I'm a family of 5 living in Dumaguete and we spend 1,100 to 1,200 USD per month. My health insurance is free and we spend 12,000 on rent so that helps. My girlfriend's family doesn't require any money from me so another savings there. If we eat out as a family we go to Valencia and do BBQ in the park for 300- 400 pesos or grab McDonald's for 700 to 800 pesos then do a picnic on the boulevard. Spend 60 to 160 pesos every afternoon for marienda ( banana que, lanzones, ice cream, etc.). We live in a gated and guarded community and we feel very safe there. If I was single I could live on around 800 usd per month. Everyone will have a different budget according to their lifestyle. I've been in the Philippines for over 7 years and prices are higher now but the exchange rate is better now .
I see that amount works...i do 1700 minus what i gave Janet and Health cost it would be around 1300 usd...We also do the BBQ in Valencia Are we friends on FB if not please do a friends request. Would enjoy meeting you sometime facebook.com/profile.php?id=100079610481824
Hi, I am planning on moving to the Philippines in 2025 from America after one year in Germany. I will be 52 years old by then. I don't plan on having a relationship, but I will need a 3 bedroom for when family visits. How could I find a nice place to live? I am also wondering about the health insurance there. I plan on putting away any extra money in case I get sick. I also plan on applying for a retirement visa. Where can I look up good advice on retirement visa?
@@jnmack73 Facebook marketplace will have listings but going through an agent is more expensive. Best advice is book hotel or airbnb for a month then look around. If you haven't been to the Philippines then 3 months looking around before you commit is highly recommended. Boots on the ground is best for finding places to live and deciding on if the is for you. Majority of people leave before the 4 or 5 year point.
@@willydear4906 , thank you for that advice.
Best Regards !!! Erwin
Thanks Erwin
USA IS BEST FOR ME. PHIL. THIRD WORLD.....I LIVED USA,WORKED,RETIRED,WIDOWED....LEFT USA..LIVED IN OHIL. NOW I AM GOING BACK TO USA FOR GOOD...

My every month living budget will be $2200 a month which will leave me about $2800 month for savings and travel money to run back to the States twice a year to see my grand kids and my daughter that has MS. My plan is to retire in BGC because I need to be near a really good hospital as I have some medical issues to be weary of. From what I've learn over the last 4-5 years is that should give me a pretty good retirement in the PI and I should be able to travel and see the sites as well. I guess being a 100% disabled vet is paying off now, I see so many people struggling here in the States that have income much less than mine.
Your video on budgets is one of the best I have ever seen. With USD1,700 pm there is no room for any emergencies like a health one. You say you have more than 1,700 ; $2,000 minimum would be comfortable plus the back up of savings.
I think i have but if you noticed most of the time I talk about having an emergency
Retired in Cebu City and for a household of 5 and adds up to $1500 avg but doesn't include a house payment(paid off). If we were renting this house, would be another $600 a month or $2100. If I were single, my budget would be around $700 to $900 even with rent.
hi thanks for sharing...you have a house or condo in Cebu City?
@@mikesphilippineretirement We live about 8 miles North from Ayala Mall. We have a 3 story house in a nice subdivision with club house, swimming pool, basketball court. Also have a helper, pay taxes, philhealth and have a SUV. You couldn't live like this in the USA if you compared apples to apples.

Hey Mike, Very informative video. I like the way you break things down. The only thing missing was Janet's tongue moving around like a lizard so my girl and I could get a good laugh..🤣🤣 Keep up the good work...
Good point! she did sing a little at the end
I probably won’t be in Philippines anytime soon but I ponder what lifestyle will be like with high budget like $50k/month. You get an upper class lifestyle in the states but nothing glamorous as it’s too low for a yacht, mansion, or year round stay at four seasons.
i do not know anyone with a 50k usd budget per month
ganda ni janet. 😂 with sun glass
