- Microsoft showed off what Windows 10 will look like on phones, tablets, laptops, TVs, and whatever else you could imagine. It all looked great, but it was nothing compared to HoloLens, a new system that puts holograms right in your living room

This one Microsoft event made the whole of CES look stupid.
Well said.
wel inte was not tht bad
xD
emilio guerid well yeah, actually I really liked what Intel, Mercedes, and BMW had to show at CES.
who is this guy? Much better than the rest of the dumb rest they have
agree. SO glad david pierce didn't cover this
Agreed
***** and dat apple lover nilay too
***** seriously? wow, how did I not know this?
***** Sad, the verge would be better without him
I'm pretty sure that the hologram thing is gonna pretty expensive but I could be wrong.
i dont cae i just need one and its coming out later this year
Link The Love its not gonna be $1000 more around 500 to 300, and yes
I will cost you too much when come to market
I feel like theyre concentrating on streaming content from a processor to something that could turn into a display. Like Xbox streaming to any windows 10... i think the HoloLens would just display whats being processed by maybe an Xbox. Display plus gyro might be all it needs thus it should be cheap-ish. Microsoft is turning into something very interesting :D
Every new technology is expensive at first, but rapidly drops in price soon after.
Look at how expensive Oculus Rift was when it first started - now there's VR headsets made from stamp-cut cardboard printouts you slide a phone into...
I can see HoloLens being very useful. Especially with design software like solidworks with being able to see your designs to scale in an actual environment. Also you could assemble the digital parts with your hands with this system, you could load up the parts the they would appear on your desk, in which you could pick up and assembly, afterwards you could bring it over to your 3d printer with the finally designs sent over using wifi and print out the final product.
In all, the future looks really awesome.
I have a feeling that 2015 is going to be a fucking epic year.
Google has huge investments in Space and VR as we know with the R&D team that developed Glass.
Apple on the other hand, is still trying to find ways to make devices 'slimmer', and have not made public any purchases of companies that do anything not related to a pc or mobile device.
Here is me hoping that in the next Apple announcement, it will at least take the time to mention it is actively looking at other areas...
Nothing you said had anything to do with Microsoft, why comment on this video to praise a company not mentioned here, and put down Apple?
The thing is, Apple only would announce a product if it's ready to be sold for consumers. Who knows, Apple may be working on something similar for years now but they're not telling anyone about it because they don't think it's prime for consumers yet. It is known that Apple has some patents on Virtual Reality stuff for their future stuff but we shall wait and see.
Alex McPherson Because it so happens that Apple is competing with Microsoft as well.
Sell AAPL and buy MSFT
luggage12345 Apple Watch.... Announced, not ready to be sold to consumers.
As always, a very informative, well made, and to the point video. Great job The Verge!
Freaking insane experience! Just want to buy it now. Now!
I agree. This looks amazing so far.
Huge. Imagine taking it with you on the go and it being fed data through your phone.
Ramon McNally nahh it has its own version of win10, no need for a shitty phone.. just directly connect as a phone would.. :) why must people complicate things with connecting a useless smartphone to things..
loving the backing music, can i stream it anywhere?
This is the Verge I like to see! Great job with the video guys!
I think he's underreacting here. This is the coolest and most mindblowing thing I've seen since I first saw a Macintosh in 1984.
I wouldn't even say that Microsoft is back. Because Microsoft has never been at this level of awesomeness before imo. This is huge.
I really liked the ending. Thumbs up for Dieter. He's always spot-on with his presentations.
So this is what Microsoft was developing... great to see some real innovation from Microsoft again.
What I could see is you could put your hand out looking at the back of your hand and options in the Holo-Environment would appear on the nails of your hand. Then you use your other hand to select the options. It would make it less awkward to select stuff, as well as more iconic to the software as a feature.
I actually couldn't believe that Hololens was actually real until the demo with that special camera rig.
Bloody amazing. It's awesome.
02:40 "It was crazy" lol...
I too love the soundtrack to this, any guesses?
Can anybody tell me the source of that background music at the end... ?
Looks like good ol' Microsoft is back in town
lets just hope it isn't another 'Kinect!'. Remember how amazing that claimed to be?
Kinect for windows is amazing
kinect is good lmao gamers JUST DONT USE IT
Kinect is pretty cool, but not really games for it. Though hacks are out there like this (2011!) "Scientists Hack Kinect to Study Glaciers and Asteroids" www.wired.com/2011/12/hacked-kinect-science/
He is not saying that it isnt good , if anybody saw the first reveal of kinect you could do things that you cant even do this year. and they announced it on 2011.
Kinect is simply incredible. Microsoft managed to make hardware that could do what previously required very expensive technology, in the range of thousands of dollars. That is why at any technical university or small scale innovation labs you see kinects everywhere. They are incredibly useful for for example making a robot able to "see" and recognize it's surroundings. Sure, it might not be the best gaming device, doesn't mean it's not awesome.
This is awesome, i never really excited seeing technology like this before, it's like far future but already become a reality, I'm glad Microsoft made this, if Apple would make something the same they should find another word than 'The Next Big Thing' tag
1:07 Isn't that the guy who played Kim in the interview? Oh jeez, it totally is.
Cool tech! I hope it's far more advance than PSVita's AR because the Vita uses AR cards to display AR in a specific place. This one is showing AR from all over the place so it might be better.
Really impressed. The holo lens yes, that has huge potential but the whole windows 10 really seems like they found their place on the market. I'm pretty excited.
This is what we call innovation. Great job Microsoft!
Excellent coverage!!
Love tehnology!!! My mind has been blown!!!
They should combine the hololens with the Kinect. Integrate the cameras and microphone into the headset
Google Glass got rekt
Oh hh yea
Microsoft is really aiming for changing the future. This hololens stuff isnt just a project that'll remain a protype forever. Soon we'll all be using something like this
2:14 it literally transports you to Mars? Literally?
Cant wait for the consumer release, Hype!
Really good video!! Whose better than an assistant of the event to talk about those amazing, mind blowing HoloLens!! Is the future now!! *--*/
nice soundtrack and other summed up stuff is nice too
Am I the only one that thinks they've messed up the name? It's not holographic, it's augmented reality!
Im not sure how they think they are getting away with calling it Holograms its really augmented reality its a stereoscopic 3D see thru display that locks to the real surroundings. But they do seem to have the best augmented reality so far. This can change everything. You wont need to leave your home anymore you could travel and work all from home. And world as we know could change into a plain gray voxel world irl. Because what will make things like furniture look like furniture the style and colors will be projected onto say a gray cube chair. Outdoors buildings might be plain gray blocks but with the AR headgear on it will be alive with animated signs in 3d geared just to you. This really only works if everyone has this on though. It will mean the end of TV screens and cell phones etc etc.... all imagery and data will be viewed thru the headgear. speaking of they need smaller lighter cooler looking headgear. eventually that will happen and one day they might be contact lenses for the displays. Gaming and movies will never be the same but will merge into one and you will never just sit there and watch a movie again but be a character in the story and interact augmented reality is the future and this device proves it can be possible now.
Great product! Can´t wait to use it!!!
It will only be released in 20 years!
What`s the background song ? Really like it but couldn`t find it with shazam. thanks.
Looks like Microsoft is heading in the right direction! Lets hope they bring together the platforms together well with Windows 10.
Side note, does anyone know the song in this video?
MIND BLOWN
What does this mean for Microsoft? It means Microsoft is fucking awesome!!
the table board should be black, but since blue is more better for marketing, it will stay blue for sure ... even if we all remember all those blue error screens; I dont wonder now, why in Linux Mint or Ubuntu there is no blue screen and its working way much faster and it is used to control Windows based systems in real time; cause it simplier than Windows.
Imagine a very-well programmed horror game with the guy walking around your own house. Imagine it saving the image of your house, so he can actually walk where you aren't looking.
MSFT already announced that the holograms will work where you are not looking, and that you would be able to hear them. All I was thinking was horror game central from here on out.
Does anyone know by any chance what the title of the music they are playing in the background is?! :)
Holy Cow!!! We Are Seeing the Future!!!
Literally transports you to Mars!? I thought you were a journalist?
>Literally transports you to Mars
just a thought: pair of gloves connected to the goggles to be able to grab and move objects, maybe even throw them!
Background Music Pls ?
Still can't find it :(
:(
Don't remember seeing this guy before but this video was pretty well done.
ye boi looks great
That is very cool. But that isn't a hologram. That's Augmented Reality.
With sun glasses, you can see what looks like the sun. With holo lenses, you can see what looks like holograms.
Also, what's going on in the lenses isn't screen tech. They're doing something with light that could be classed as holograms.
Ken Heslip I see, it certainly holds a lot of potencial but I guess you need a budget of ford mustang just to buy one of these. Haha
Franz Cola We'll see. Maybe MS will sell them at little profit to capture the market.
Alex Cavendish Every time I read "Augmented Reality", I get nightmares about passing that incredibly difficult Joker tunnel in Arkham City.
I unfortunately had to look online for tips on passing it.
(shudders)
okkay... now that's what I was waiting for!
Dat reaction tho 1:37 XD
Imagine if they got Pokemon to work on this thing, with GPS you could go outside and really live the dream
Hololens is going to be a game changer and it's going to make Microsoft cool again. It's a first tech that I'm really excited about since first smartphones.I'm also as excited about Oculus Rift when it gets ready for consumers.Fuck smart watches and google glass. We want Virtual reality.
What's the soundtrack playing in the background, please!?
Amazing, simply amazing stuff!! Well done Microsoft!
back to awesomeness!
Anybody knows what's the name of the song used?
Google probably feels salty as fuck
Holy crap!!! The demo with Mars and Minecraft are mind boggling!!!! This hololens could change the way we work with digital development. I could only dream how this could be used in research and development and as 3D printing improves so fast this kind of thing may become the go to device if you want to quickly and easily develop something.
Just wow...... Good job Microsoft, that's true innovation.
might make the switch from OS X Yosemite :)
This would be amazing to watch live sports. Imagine watching a football game, as if a scaled down version of the ENTIRE FIELD were sitting on the floor of your living room.... AMAZING!
This is a great video, keep it up!
This is the future. Amazing.
shame it looked good, but ...
so the demo can be observed:
1) we see very well in profile the distance between the eye and the screen
sight distance and screen size, we already see that the 3D view angle squeezed very low max 30 ° so the equivalent of a pc monitor at 1 meter
2) during the demo where the woman makes the drone we know very well that the camera sends the images and that is connected to large cable and the camera is topped by a large apareil (which must surrement spotted the camera in space) much more precisely than the helmet.
it is a commercial trick to win investor
and to show that Microsoft is still in the race
a chimera that will never see the day
concurrency for the rift occulus
WEBZORO
Holy shit Microsoft is awesome.
What!? That was mind blowing! Whoa talk about into the future! Good Job Microsoft! 👍👍👍👍👍
hololens is a magic item!
Super freaking awesome!!!
The Skype thing would be trippy
Yesteryears film tricks are now real for real
This is really amazing! Really glad for Microsoft. They are definitely the underdog. But this announcement just put them way ahead of Google and Oculus in the next gen computing space. Things are Just coming together nicely.
I've been disappointed with apple lately (ie. app store, icloud, etc.), finally Windows is being properly innovative, hopefully they have improved usability.
Hmm. I wonder if we can find aliens on hologram version of Mars.
Very awesome but i think it will take an end similiar to Google Glass :/
I'm impressed, great job Microsoft.
The Verge should do more videos like this..
I am honestly surprised Microsoft is back in NEW things. It's been awhile :P
They're under entirely new leadership. Satya wants to get MS back to the Gates days. So far they are moving in the right direction.
I can't wait! I hope it's good! BlazerManiacNumber96
This probably is a dumb question, but do the others without the glasses see the holograms?
While Apple and Google basked in complacency, Microsoft was steadily making moving towards becoming the leader in innovation again. The tables have turned.
They LITERALLY transport you to Mars...
That's 'Augmented reality'! Anyway, the future is here!! :) Feels awesome to be a part of it. If this is true for 2020, I wonder what it would be like to live in 2050 AD! I hope I see the minority report type holographic displays before I die!
Yeah i was going to say people keep saying VR. VR is when you put yourself in the virtual world, while AR puts the virtual world in the real world.
Finally microsoft innovated, i hope apple learnt something, i was an apple fan but no longer, i got a pc an discovered another world
Oh boy, this looks nice...
Didnt end with a outro or intro sound
Edit THANKS FOR LIEKS
Kudos Microsoft...
His mind is totally fucked right now!
Microsoft or Apple we just love new tech that enrich us and change your life.
Little fact for you guys Microsoft has actually been working on this for 7 years... yep just decided to show it to the world now who knows they might already be working or the NEXT xbox or anything
Accel World!!!
Ugh. Stop calling them holograms. It's augmented reality.
Will windows 10 for phones have desktop?
Microsoft is amazingly awesome!!!
Cool!
Whats that keyboard at 0:14?
I run through the comments a year later to find out if anyone else has figured out the BGM. @DieterBohn :(... What's the BGM dammit :/ @The Verge
Not a big fan of windows in general.
But windows 10 looks great and those glasses are cool!
