The smoke is totally normal whenever Marvel Mystery oil is involved. This thing runs good. Marvel is good stuff, cleans them out nicely. Used it a lot and have two of these motors.... Regards from Alaska.
I just swapped an ls into a boat like that, took out the 220 and was able to adapt to the gpu motor stand using ls adjustable motor mount plates and spacing out the mounts. I had to build only the rear gear drive mount and x brace to adapt it. I am very happy that this worked out and I am thinking many people would like to know this because it makes it easier to switch to an ls platform.
Nice! My plan is to get this boat up and running, cut my teeth on it, and get an LS boat. I've been wanting to find a junkyard aluminum block 5.3 or 6, but they are crazy expensive and the 5.3's are hard to find. This rigging would have to be beefed up for sure if I were to put an LS on it, lol.
@@KMLTimesTwo I'm over here cutting my teeth aswell, lol. It's crazy how those aluminum block varieties are so expensive, I guess its supply and demand but for the money I would just go with a 408 iron ls, I'm working on putting one together soon. I have a pretty stout ls6 in there now but for a little extra weight i could get so much more torque. I have all stainless rigging that is pretty stout luckily. I see that you can buy stroker short blocks for around $4500. I figured that's a pretty decent deal because with buying all the parts and paying to have the block gone through would be close to that price considering you had a block already. Ams racing I believe was the site
Good job on your build so far!! I'm really glad to see an airboat rebuild series there's not many on the tube, subscribed and looking forward to your next videos. Also I vote you should keep what you've got and finish the build those 220s run forever
Thanks Bearhawk. Yes, I am surprised at the lack of airboat builds (and interest in them) and videos on CZcams. I have had a few other projects get in the way, but getting ready to ship out the prop for repair. Can't wait to get this thing on the water!
Water setting in the motor causes compression rings to rust, oil ring to stick etc. The rusting parts will deteriorate rapidly. Ring pins, crank bushings, valve guides etc. All of which causes smoking and will only get worse It might pay you to do a quick motor rebuild. Sorry to be a buzz killer. But would be a great project for beginners (teens) to learn on.
Thanks for the response. I am pulling the motor to paint it and it might be worth pulling off the jugs. I am trying to avoid it, lol. Your advice is the right advice for sure.
Airboat manufacturers, diamondback, Hammant, zip tie or hose clamp ( crimp style) the wire onto the cage so they can paint them separately and it be two tone. A lot easier than welding it back on too. 👍🏾
Thanks FL Man. I always thought that was someone "being lazy." I wanted to weld them on, but then again I always make things more complex and take forever to finish. Maybe the metal tie wrap/hose clamp is the way to go. They can always be welded on later. I am close to wrapping up another project and then I will be back on the airboat.
Do a differential compression test! To check your rings and valve seats. Oil and smoking If you have too much oil it will do this. Each engine will like it's own oil level, if too high it will blow it out.
That is way too much water! Any good quality oil will work just fine! I would run straight wt oil! Aero Shell 100 is 50 wt oil! As an aircraft mechanic, those engines are bullet proof!

Go for it , I,m building one as well , your info gave me ideas thanks,
Thanks Gerald! I am in mid-fiberglass repairs as we speak...so this boat WILL hit the water!

Awesome job. You are very good with the trouble shooting. Keep up the good work. Take care and stay safe.
Thanks for the kinds words Michael.

The only big issue with that particular motor is the available parts
Thanks Bryan. You are correct sir. Hopefully, I won't need many parts!

Thanks Jon. When I get it back together, I plan to run it a bit to loosen rings, etc. Then I will get into compression, etc.
Replace your exhaust valve guides or it will continue to smoke and used oil
INSULATOR ON THE MAG?
I had someone rebuild the mag. All is well now....just need to finish it!!!
All that water the cylinders probably have rust . Pull jugs and keep rebuilding the boat will be a blast.
Thanks Eric. Motor is coming off here soon. I plan on taking a peek inside.
Hell run it till you cant then have it rebuilt and have it converted to an 0470 lol, you’ll have more hp for sure and a more reliable motor imo
That's the plan!!!!
Run it till blows up it's a GPU junk
I am hoping to get back to working and videoing my air boat build. Time is something i don't have a lot of right now. Take care and stay safe.
Yes, I understand about the time. It would seem we should have more time on our hands these days, but isn't working out that way, lol.
I say keep on building.
Thank you. I am looking to get back to it very soon and start posting vids again.
Run the hell out of it. Cant kill those things. I have one myself
Thanks Chad. I looked forward to getting this thing on the water. I have a prop update coming in a few weeks!

There was soooo much water in the engine for a very long time (unfortunately.) We are going to run it as it and address any issues as they arise.
