You can punch down in comedy as long as it's done tastefully, intention needs to be defined and it helps to tie in some self deprecation to not take yourself that seriously. There's a fine line between straight up insulting and a joke, and some "comedians" like to throw out insults under the guise of a joke and we can see through it. Ill also say there are definitely some people who can't take a joke whatsoever and that's unfortunate. Dark comedy can actually be therapeutic for me and it takes some of the edge off of life to laugh at the seriousness of it all

Absolutely agree ! I have a Disability and the first thing I often do when people are afraid of joking with me, I go for a super dark joke about myself. And then I say : you can go this hard with me, just to break the ice and make the person comfortable with me. I know how people could sound like dark or punching down is bad, but it all depend how you say it the timing, the delivery and obviously context. I find it sad when people get so scared of it or plain mad at it. Or talk on behalf of other people. there is people that can only laugh at others, laugh at themselves but not from others, and some not at all and everything in between ! It depend on each individual !Long lives jokes of all kind!

I will add tho, the amount of people who can't take a joke is HEAVILY overestimated nowadays for some reason, people think cancel culture has become this MASSIVE thing when 99.999% of people won't give a shit if a joke is made clear.

Regarding the "everyone is Irish" bit, it comes up because Americans are always trying to find something to relate to. From one American to another, we'll ask what city/state you're from and comment how cool that is, or if we have family/roots there, or in the case of Kentucky, show sympathy. Since that doesn't apply across the pond, people will be quick to identify their ancestral roots. Some people have legitimate sounding names (Archibold-England, Reichenbach-German, anything starting with Mc or O'-Irish), but some with a very generic last name will say they are from Ireland because it sounds cool. There is also the factor of confirmation bias where people who think they have an Irish heritage will probably talk to the Irish person in the room

A large part of comedy is subversion of expectation, saying something people don't expect you to; when it comes to things like dark humour saying something you absolutely shouldn't say under normal circumstances IS the joke, cause the comedian is relying upon you understanding that you shouldn't and that what they are saying is absurd for the joke to work. It also normalizes people and groups rather than putting one on a pedestal or treating another with undue delicacy. Take Donald Glover's skit on allowing everyone to use the N word in normal speech. It should be clear to absolutely everyone listening to him that he doesn't actually think white folk should be able to call each other that word over a disagreement on curtains...

tbh, Salt Lake City could be just that Mormons worship is pretty separate from other Christian religions that have 'alter boys' so its not as relatable, as well as an aversion to jokes about sexual misconduct in general because for religious people, it's more of a serious thing that needs to be weeded out than a laughing matter.

"Is easy not to punch down"
Well you see Jack in comedy everyone and everything is one the same level so is never a "punching down" situation, because comedy should provoke! It should blast through prejudices, challenge preconceptions! Comedy should always leave you different than when it found you. Sure, humor can hurt, even alienate, but the risk is better than the alternative: a steady diet of innocuous, childproof, flavorless mush! Demand to be challenged, to be offended, to be treated like thinking, reasoning adults!

@@doyouknowkeplertwentytwob4032 pretending everyone is equal and systemic problems of class and race don't exist doesn't in fact make them not exist. If comedy is such an even playing field then why are there no white people jokes in the states? Why is it that some comedians have to lean so heavily on making fun of marginalized groups? "There is no punching down" has the same ring to it as "I don't see race" and "all lives matter.". Just a way to distract from real problems so the joke teller doesn't have to confront the heavy history behind their "jokes".

You see that’s where you don’t get Irish humor compare to American. Irish humor is self inflicted and self identity based. Make fun of yourself and people like you.
American humor is basically, fk you, fk you, fk you, fk you, fk me, fk everyone after thinking about it.
The only “true rule” of American comedy is don’t make fun of 9/11 or “make fun of my political party”. But gen mil and z is starting to make those jokes become more of a option so in about five-seven years. No hold bar comedy

    • @avikchakraborty5536

Dave chapalle can do such things because
      1. He is a veteran comedian with atleast 20 yrs of experience which helps him to understand how far he can take his provocative jokes
2.he is charismatic, he knows how to keep the audience in control
      3. Jack is right about not provoking audience because he himself is just getting introduced to comedy and stand up
Comparing him to Dave is nonsensical since that guy, as I said earlier, is a veteran and his audience is used to the kind of comedy he does
Whereas, if an amateur like jack goes up on stage and starts provoking people who have never been exposed to him
It might provoke more people than it should have

The fucking virtue signaling when Jack spoke about how you can "go and get feedback from your audience" if you are not transphobic or racist was so fucking awful.
Also it is very fucking obvious he is not a comedian, because any joke can offend someone if it hits too close to their life.
A joke about tomatoes will make a tomato farmer who just lost his crops go mad.
A joke about being vegetarian and how "meat is murder" will get people mad in the middle of cowboy country.
A joke about peanut allergies might make the 1 dude in the crowd who is actually allergic go mental.
There's always people who are just ready to be offended by anything.
