Aspartate amino transaminase( AST) also called as serum glutamate oxaloacetate transferase(SGOT) is a predominant enzyme present in the liver and heart cells. Minor concentrations are also present in the muscle and kidney.Increased levels in the circulation are most commonly due to hepatic injury.
Transaminases are the enzymes required in all the transamination reactions and these include Aspartate aminotransferase( AST) and Alanine aminotransferase(ALT). Any cellular damage will basically release the enzymes into circulating blood resulting in eventual elevation. Since maximum concentration of these enzymes are present in the liver , testing of them forms the basis for diagnostic evaluation of the liver function.
    Normal range :
    Males : Less than 40 U/L
    Female :Less than 32 U/L
Testing Procedure : What to Expect
Blood is drawn from the vein by inserting a small needs after following appropriate precautions.
    Vacutainer colour : Red
    Sample : serum sample
    Special precautions : None
    Fasting required : No
Risks : Include occasional discomfort at the time the sample withdrawal. Pain at the site the drawl and rarely fainting which can occur in any other venous sample withdrawal.
    When is it tested ?
When the doctors finds symptoms and signs suggestive of liver disorder.
    This can be due to
Lifestyle related ( Alcohol, Fatty Liver )
    Infectious ( Viral Hepatitis )
    Metabolic ( Hemosiderosis, Wilsons disease)
Routine health screening as in Comprehensive metabolic Panel (CMP)
What does increased AST levels mean ?
    Clinical interpretation :
AST levels are usually interpreted with ALT and other liver function tests. Both the enzymes are highly specific for the liver injury. Any increase in the levels indicate injury to the liver cell. Injured cells release the enzymes into the circulation which results in the increased levels in the body. Injury is usually due to any of the following
    Viral infections : Viral Hepatitis
    Alcohol
    Obesity and inactivity
    Drug induced injury
Ischemia : due to decreased blood flow to the liver.

Sir, last year in november 18 i did LFT test. All values were normal EXCEPT for SGOT = 35 (Lab range 5-34).
Now in November 19 i did LFT test again, n all values are normal except SGOT value increased to '40'.
Whats the risk & disease for this increasing of 5 digit, as only SGOT is increasing year by year? Thanx in adv.
