  • This series is intended to help new players get to grips with and understand Europa Universalis IV (EU4). The idea is that through watching someone more experienced go through the same processes that you will, it will help teach the game. As such, I play through this as normal, but take the time to go into more detail about what is happening, and why. If you have any further questions or need things clarified, please do let me know in the comments! Hope this helps!
This has been recorded with all DLC up to and including Emperor.
Please like and subscribe to this channel if you enjoyed this preview of Europa Universalis IV with the Man the Guns expansion! It really helps out! Likewise, if you have any tips, critiques or advice please do comment as I'd be pleased to read them.
Emperor DLC was given to me by Paradox at no charge.

I'm not exactly a beginner, but this series has still been soooo useful for filling in little gaps in knowledge and the calculations behind certain things. I had no idea blockading siphoned out some income!

Had a 6/6/6 heir at that point in my first playthrough and the same event happened...

Love the series Mordred! Would you consider an updated tutorial series for CK2 aswell :)?

Hey Mordred, I've been thoroughly enjoying this series and have learnt a ton. I was happy to become a subscriber. I'm a total beginner, though, and I was a bit disappointed that here in no. 11 you suddenly seemed to speed up! Whereas earlier you were careful to make the exact mechanics of everything you did clear, in this one your mouse was moving so fast in places that I couldn’t see what it was doing! For instance, when you imposed a naval blockade it kind-of happened in an instant, and there was no explanation. I know you were involved in a war and all your thought was on that; but I'm wondering whether you'll return later to some of these little mechanical things to make them clearer? Or maybe I just need to accept that you've moved beyond me now, and start learning by doing! I do appreciate your in-context explanations of game concepts, though, so maybe I should persevere just for those. Are you planning a more formal EU4 tutorial (or is there one, and I've missed it)? I'd certainly be very glad to see something that!

Yeah sorry about that! It's hard to keep a good pace when many things are going on. It's been a while since I recorded this series so I cannot remember off-hand what things I return to. If you have any questions though, please do ask! I have a couple of tutorials (search for tutorials on this channel), but they're not as expansive as this series (I just found Beginner Friendly Series to be one of the most effective teaching tools). I also have a couple of regular tutorials over on the Paradox Grand Strategy channel, with more to come soon, hopefully!

OK, thanks, I appreciate the problem. I'll do a search for tutorials-do you have others for the current version? I did see one from 4 years ago, but hesitated thinking some of what you explained then might be out-of-date…
In the meantime, though, could you explain in a few words how to impose a naval blockade? Do I just aim my ships at the enemy port?
      Thanks! 😀

General concepts are still the same though some of the minor details may have changed since those tutorials. Blockades; put a fleet in the sea zones adjacent to the province port (little icon on the main map, where your ships would dock). Each fleet has a blockade power based on their ship speed (light ships are best - increased by admiral’s manoeuvre skill), and so long as that exceeds the development of the province(s) then it is blockaded. You can see by the port icon changing whether a port is indeed blockaded. Likewise the sea zone tool tip will show what is blockaded.

Great, thank you! I'll have a look at some of your earlier tutorials as well. Much appreciated!

No problem. Blockades will also earn you a portion of the money from that province, devastate that province and count towards warscore so they can be very valuable if you're able to get naval superiority.

    How do you blocade?

You move your ships to the sea outside the port
