      The in-world lore, in general, took a massive nosedive when you compare, like, Diamond/Pearl to Sword/Shield. In DP, you have lots of NPCs inhabiting the world, ready to tell you about their little village or the dangerous woods to the West, or whatever little details about Sinnoh you'd need to know in order to feel like you're in a place that actually feels lived in. In SwSH, a lot of the NPCs you see that make the towns feel less empty are just those ones walking around talking to themselves about absolutely nothing. The actual flavor and character of the world doesn't exist beyond the admittedly compelling visual designs of each town.
      I say this as someone who kinda loves Sword and Shield more than Diamond and Pearl, mind you. The wild area is the coolest thing GameFreak has ever done and it almost makes me forgive not including Pokemon following us. But it's not without its downsides, many of which GameFreak previously got right.

    My personal choice of what I didn't like they removed was the Optional Activities. The kind of activities which, while unnecessary to do to beat the game, can grant you some pretty great bonuses outside of battle, for instance the Explorer Kit in Gen 4, The Entralink in Gen 5, the Secret Bases in the Gen 3-makes, and the many performance contests featured in various generations. I feel like the ability to do something to get something useful that isn't exclusively for battling is a pretty vital feature. Pokémon Amie and the camping are fun, but they only increase relationship with Pokémon so they can perform better in Battles. What about the ability to get rare items such as extra Master Balls like in the Secret Bases? What about mining for gems to sell for money in the Explorer Kit? What about finding Pokémon with exclusive abilities like in the Entralink? What about something like Dream Radar from the early days of the 3DS? I wish for more content that isn't focused on strengthening for battling.

    • @WishGender
      @WishGender Před 2 lety +13

      my favorite game is black 2 (largely due to nostalgia but it's a great game) and it really made the game more fun to have optional activities. i really liked the medal rally and join avenue (i got so jealous of my sister when she got a master ball from a raffle shop). it took me years to try it but i really ended up liking pokestar studios since it was like a puzzle (though i have to say, mandatory tutorial for it was not cool). the additions to the entralink in b2w2 were also fun. i got so rich doing the find treasures mission. unova felt full of mystery with the keldeo place, the desert resort, finding n's castle in b2w2, the abyssal ruins, the strange house and the ghost girl, the zoroark in lostlorn forest, the regis in clay tunnel with regigigas in twist mountain, the giant chasm and finding kyurem in bw. Plus the little music easter eggs, which i wish they would do more of. like the drums that get added when you run or the extra instruments in accumula town, or the village bridge ensemble or the girl with the flute in anville town. hidden grottoes were fun, especially when i found a dragonite in one. the cameos from characters like cynthia, crasher wake, looker, and caitlin. let's not forget the memory link cutscenes and n's pokemon. oh and how could i forget black tower/white treehollow. white forest in white 1 was awesome. you could find all sorts of nat dex pokemon. i also like the overworld pokemon that show up once a week (braviary, mandibuzz, jellicent). cheren and bianca were also good characters that you got to see grow and then in the sequels cheren is a gym leader and bianca is juniper's assistant.
      sorry for going off on a rant about unova. i got a little carried away haha. i just wish the new games would be more like the gen 4 and 5 ones

      As someone who loves swsh, I absolutely agree with you. It was quite disappointing to have that for so many years. BW and B2W2 were the only games to have many areas to explore. XY was the most common type but they still had kilodue city, terminus cave, Mewtwo and the looker story. ORAS had the Delta episode and the battle island. SM had the rest of poni island and the UB story. USUM had a little more with the rainbow rocket arc, ultra space with legendaries and high shiny odds, poni island with Zygarde and I believe that is it. Let's go was like XY with only one new location and all of the master trainers and the ability to fight Red, Blue and Green. SWSH, what did we get, only the postgame story. While it was good and I did enjoy it, a wholesome ending, more could of been added then the battle tower, level upgrades in the wild area and so forth. Hopefully, this is the last-gen that does postgame like this, but it's hard to know.

If you KO 500 total, the Brilliant Aura pokémon are the ONLY ONES with the increased shiny odds. Not regular pokémon, only the brilliant aura ones. the one change i hate the most is the reduction in difficulty after gen 4.
    since gen 5 you almost always get a free mon apart from the starter early on which makes team planning redundent.
    in black/white you get one of the 3 sage pokemon befor being allowed to battle the 1st gym.
    in pkmn x/y you get a gen1 starter including its mega stone after beating the 1st gym.
    in the gen3 remakes you get fucking latias/latios including their mega stone after beating the 5th gym.
    and then theres the friendship bs in the gen4 remakes that takes what level of difficulty was left and throws it into the trash.
    pokemon has been mainstream since gen1 so i dont understand why the games have to be made easier with each new gen that comes out.
    its not like any pokemon game was ever hard to begin with.

      I mean gen 1 was fairly difficult, and tbh even if they have made the games easier, there's also ways for players to make the games harder if they choose. We created nuzlockes to make games harder and tbh the point of the game was never difficulty level, it's always been about catching all pokemon, which is a challenge in itself. Children aren't going to run around catching all 800 pokemon like adults will.

Moves having a use outside battle, but moreso 'random' moves doing their effect, such as Flash lightin up the room, Sweet scent attracting pokemon, Rock smash smashing rocks that either gave items or pokemon, and my favorite from gen 2, Cut actually cutting a 2x2 square of tall grass.
    And that's what i miss, moves interacting with the overworld as a bonus trick, and really, they could still fit in well with the 3d consoles nowadays,
    Here are some examples:
    Attract in the overworld draws in opposite gender pokemon, Sweet scent draws in Aura pokemon from the grass, Flash 'stuns' nearby overworld pokemon, moves like Roar and Whirlwind pushes nearby pokemon away, Whirlpool causing a Fishing spot to appear, you get the point!
    Also with both Overworld pokemon and Camps, there is NO excuse to not have included Following pokemon in Sword and Shield.

    Flash although not necessary can be replaced with a flashlight item. This could also change the dynamic of cave exploration in newer games by having the light be a ray in front of you instead of around you.
    Cut can be like big shears or a chainsaw.
    Rock smash could be a pickaxe

It was my number 1 source of pokébeans, and even though those aren't relevant in sword and shield anymore since pokébeans more-or-less got replaced by making curry, it would still be nice to have an easy place to find curry ingredients. Maybe replace the pokébean source with some sort of foot court or market where you can buy ingredients, or at least get more of ingredients you've already acquired at some point or another. I don't remember for certain, but if I *am* remembering correctly, I think the NPCs that sell curry ingredients change their stock daily, so it'd be nice to have a way to get more of a specific ingredient even when the NPCs aren't stocking it, especially for someone who wants to complete the curry-dex.

  • @StateBlaze1989
    @StateBlaze1989 Před rokem

    One of mine would be the downgrading of dungeons. Like back in gens 1-5, you had multiple locations that were these multi-layered mazes of puzzles and enemies. Silph Co. and Seafoam islands of Kanto, Sinnoh's Mt. Coronet, the Whirl Islands of Johto, etc. You could easily get lost and turned around if you didn't pay attention to where you were going. Early gen dungeons especially made the escape rope an actual useful item.
    Then by the time you get to gens 7 and 8, dungeons like these are virtually dead. I don't know if it is because of the 3D jump or just a lack in quality level designers, but it is immediately noticeable.
    Alola's Victory Road amounts to the equivalent of the first floor of Kanto's. Meanwhile in Galar, there are all of 2 caves in the entire game, both of which are basically straight lines from one end to the other. And with wild pokemon encounters being visible in the overworld, you can easily just walk *around* them and avoid any sort of conflict outside of the possible occasional trainer. Isle of armor and crown tundra added in two decently sized cave systems, but I shouldn't have to turn to dlc for something that should be in the base game.
    Coincidentally, they also made the escape rope an infinite use key item in gen 8. But because of the neutering of the dungeon design, the ability to walk around and avoid wild pokemon, the most complex level designs being outdoor routes, and immediate access to the taxi fly system, they simultaneously made the escape rope the most useless item in the game.

    I played a lot of Diamond and HeartGold growing up, & I always liked the contests & poffins; they were cool side activities to waste some time in, but you could ignore them if you just wanted to play the main game. Sad to see that an (ideally) optional activity like feeding candies became a central mechanic in a mainline game. I get that Let's Go Eevee and Let's Go Pikachu are for younger children, but Pokemon's basic mechanics are quite simple and intuitive and adding candy mechanics in the way they did breaks an already easy game in half. Plus, it's not like the previous games weren't designed for younger kids; hell, one of the big reasons the buttons on the Battle screen are huge and color-coded in the 4th Gen games is because Junichi Masuda wanted to make gameplay easier for people who couldn't read.
    I also totally agree about the berry collecting and the follow Pokemon; again, berry planting is one of my favorite side activities in the games; there's just something very relaxing about taking a little time out to stop and check on/water your berry plants, and seeing your Pokemon follow you around in the world gives Game Freak another way to add personality to the mons, something that'd be hard to incorporate in battles without making a bunch of new animations. It adds to the cuteness factor as well, which is one of the big reasons Pokemon is as popular among kids as it is.

    Laughs in bird pokemon. I never noticed surf hit allies since I always had a bird in the second slot for double battles. I only played pearl and always assumed it hits everyone. Hence why I put a bird in the second slot and didn't notice the nerf.

    I’m really glad they brought back following Pokémon in the Isle of Armor
    Edit: Hey guys before replying just know that I wrote this comment the second I saw the following Pokémon. As for my true opinion on it, I do really wish that they made the following Pokémon keep up with the player.

      And it also costs 30$ to actually have your Pokemon be able to follow you. Even then, they only follow you on the Isle of Armor.

    I agree with these except Shiny pokemon since I don't care about them.
    Two things I really wish it never happened:
    1. Addition of regional forms: I've always thought that they're out of new ideas to create a Pokémon. But then, this came out. It is the worst than I imagined. Not only they look worse than the originals, they also have signature moves better than their original forms. Why did they not just give those moves the originals in the first place? Those who can evolve from regional variants should be evolved from original ones:
    Mr. Mime/Barrierd leveled up -> Mr. Rime/Barrikōru
    Yamask/Deathmas leveled up knowing Ground move -> Runerigus/Deathban
    Linoone/Massuguma leveled up -> Obstagoon/Tachifusaguma
    Meowth/Nyarth leveled up knowing Steel move -> Perrserker/Nyaiking
    Sneasel/Nyula leveled up (I also hate trading) holding Razor Claw during daytime -> Sneasler/Ōnyula
    Qwilfish/Harysen leveled up knowing Dark move -> Overqwil/Hariman
    Wooper leveled up knowing Poison move -> Clodsire/Doō
    It's only because I didn't care about those type changes during evolution (excluding Mega evolutions since they're not permanent) as long as they're original: Bellossom/Kireihana (loses Poison type), Scizor/Hassam, Steelix/Haganeil, Tyranitar/Bangiras, Decidueye/Junaiper, etc.
    2. Paradox Pokémon: another lazy feature (except for Koraidon and Miraidon)... Those who have paradox forms could've just been made with some sort of Mega evolution to turn into them (Cyclizar/Mototokage could have been a Legendary Pokémon). For me, this is something that only Scarlet and Violet should have. I can't believe that they have the same concept as the Ultra Beasts.
