You guys have to listen to the live version at Red Rock...not too many bands can make an already beautiful song sound even better..Maynard voice with those guitar solos catapault this into one of the best live songs I've ever heard! ENJOY

There isn’t a more emotive and powerful guitar solo like the one in the Stone And Echo live version of Orestes. I get goosebumps every time, and even emotional sometimes. It sounds like an anguished cry for help that gradually reigns to its fate. It’s a must listen, especially now that the studio version has been done.
It’s like the equivalent of a modern jazz standard

Dude the landscapes of the chords with the pace change ups of the drums gravity of the bass etherial vocals fell in love with the song as soon as I heard it

The name of this song is a reference to a Greek myth. Orestes is the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. While he is away, his mother kills his father. Later on, Orestes comes back to avenge his father, killing his mother and her lover, Aegisthus.
However, breaking family ties is a terrible offense to the Erinyes, the Furies that even gods fear. They pursue Orestes around Greece, and he finds salvation in Athena’s temple, where the goddess makes a trial and acquits Orestes....Oh yeah, perhaps Maynards best vocal performance... Friggin awesome!!
Judith is also on this album, so he’s clearly struggling with his emotions concerning his mother’s suffering. Things are going to get really dark now. In psychoanalysis, an “Orestes Complex” is an urge for a son to kill his mother. Over long periods of time, it can occur. MJK wants nothing more than to end her years of pain and suffering. He’s contemplating doing it himself.

Wow…This video was particularly special for me…I first heard this song sometime during sophomore year in 2002. I’ve listened to this song probably close to a 1000 times, and I mean that literally. I have every single moment of this song memorized to the tiniest detail. It’s been so much apart of my life, and has played as the soundtrack of my life sooo many times…it’s basically apart of my DNA.
It’s absolutely amazing to watch two people listen and experience this song for the FIRST time…

I watched this live in Dallas when they opened for NIN. The album just came out. We went and picked up the CD..that’s how long ago this was, and listened to it all the way down. And when I say it just came out, it was out that day, got it brand new, and listened for the first time, then saw them that night. Amazing concert.
Ya I was there too. Was in high school at the time. Original lineup was best and this was prime Maynard vocal ability.
@@shawn9566 it was what the Nokia center or something. Anyway. We were up on the grassy knoll. Perfect view. They had huge screens set on either side of the stage. We were smoking some funky cigarettes, and this security guard walked up and asked what we were doing. My friend cuffed it, and we were like..nothing man, what’s going on? He took it, and said, “Shit I just wanted a hit is all.” But he walked off with it. We were laughing. Rolled another and kept on. This was years ago, I don’t condone that action at all. Don’t do it *said in a lecturing voice*

This was the first Maynard album I owned. I played this ENTIRE album nonstop that year.
Orestes killed his mother after she ran away with a lover and murdered his father Agamemnon when he returned from Troy. Orestes had to hide with the Oracle of Delphi from the Furies while the Olympians heard evidence to prove his Matricide was legal.
Finally you guys are doing one of the three mjk tracks I've been begging for. This song is beautiful I never thought a song about giving birth to a child can be so brilliant. Love you guys thank you trash talker for life

This is a song of deep feeling.. listened to it all through high school. Went about 10 years before I even knew what the lyrics were. The sheer inspiration that comes from Maynard's different bands is almost beyond measure. Loved the reaction!💗
The punk band Bad Religion put their band name in the lyrics of their song No Direction, "No Bad Religion song can make your life complete" .Rage Against the Machine almost does it in Know Your Enemy, "I was born to rage against them"

You have to help me my brothers there is a truly epic rock song that no one has heard, it is by a band called Jess and the ancient ones and the song is “prayer for death and fire”. You definitely won’t regret discovering this masterpiece of rock and sharing it with the world.
Maynard's mom had suffered from a stroke and had lingering issues for some 27 years before she died, but she was a Christian Scientist and refused medical treatment, hence the lyrics behind Judith, and this song is him lamenting the emotions and morals that prevented him from helping her to die peacefully.
But she was still alive when this album was written

Mer de noms is sea of names. Almost every song title is a name. There is actually an alphabet they created that you can break the code and correlate every letter to the English alphabet.
I think GnR mentioned the bands name in a roundabout way on the song Breakdown. I think the lyric was " every thing was Rose's when we held on to the Guns"

There’s a bunch of bands in the hardcore genre that do it. The most perfect one that comes to mind is the song “Losin It” by Bury Your Dead. It’s only a 2 minute song, but that whole 2 minutes is so good it’ll make you smack the living shit out of everyone in your path.

2000 was a good year. I remember picking Mer De Noms up at Recycled CDs in Gainesville GA on a pre-order. 21 years later it's still one of my favorite albums from start to finish.

i think it is a somewhat broad metaphor for "rebirth". When a child is born the ambilocal cord is cut. it is about letting go and growing as a person. Fill in the blank of whatever struggle you wish.
