My theory is that it's hard to record all the instruments with a bell flaring very widely out. The microphone can only capture this "wide" effect from a distance but technicians often put the micro close since "each instrument needs to amplified". I think almost all instruments blossom only open at a distance where there is interaction with the room and the air in it.
Hi Jean Pierre! Interesting thoughts, your absolutely right. Brass instruments usually need more space - sometimes less sound-proof surface effects better sound in a small room as well.
