"City/Capital of Temples" is a temple complex in Cambodia and is the largest religious monument in the world, 402 acres.
Originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire by King Suryavarman II, it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century; as such, it is also described as a "Hindu-Buddhist" temple.
Representing the abode of Hinduism's ancient gods, the spectacular temple of Angkor Wat is quite literally heaven on earth and the jewel in the Khmer archaeological crown. It's the largest of all Angkor's temples and one of the best preserved. Surrounded by a huge rectangular reservoir and an outer wall measuring over 3km in length, the temple consists of three tiered galleries and five towers shaped like lotus buds.
Such is the national pride in the site that the outline of the temple features on Cambodia's national flag. Little can prepare you for the sheer scale, splendor and symmetry of Angkor Wat, a perfect blend of artistic genius and spiritual devotion. Although somewhat neglected after the 16th century, Angkor Wat is unique in that it was never completely abandoned and the moat safeguarded the temple against the encroaching jungle.
Angkor Wat Is one of the ten wonders of the man made world and should be on the list of everyone.
The highpoint of Angkorian architecture and the culmination of centuries of innovation in style, technique and design. Angkor Wat needs no introduction but even at smaller sites such as Prasat Banteay Samre, Prasat Phanom Rung, and Prasat Beng Mealea, all the characteristic elements are on display including; concentric enclosures, raised causeways, cruciform terraces, elaborate gopuras, enclosing galleries, 'libraries', the distinctive 'pineapple' sandstone towers, tiered pediments and lintels featuring finely carved narrative and heraldic designs plus, of course, the iconic devata images.
Aside from the sheer size of Angkor Wat, there are few architectural innovations but what it does see is the successful coming together on a huge scale of centuries of trial, error and experimentation.
In decorative terms, the elaborate, layered pediments, proliferation of iconic devata figures and covering of wall and column spaces with extensive tapestry reliefs was groundbreaking while the extraordinary gallery reliefs of Angkor Wat itself are incomparable in Khmer architecture. (The relief-lined outer galleries total nearly 1km and nearly 2,000 devata figures have been counted.)
Construction methods also seem to have reached a peak during this era with the huge site avoiding the catastrophic collapse of Baphuon and the hasty, poor building work of many subsequent Jayavarman VII sites. A surprising fact considering the sheer number of sites dating to this period although it's clear that many of these sites would have been initiated and completed before and after the reign of Suryavarman II himself.

This was designated a UNESCO site in 1992. Another amazing site is a temple on a mountain between Cambodia and Thailand here is the video of this other UNESCO site if you want to see it.

Thank you very much. I try to explain what I know. It’s fun for me to read about a place and then go and see it for myself. I could spend all day walking around Angkor and still not see everything.

I’ve been trying to figure out a way to go there. I looked at flights and hotels for April/May but the cost didn’t make sense for me. It was cheaper to come back to Cambodia. I will see how things look in October, my next holiday from work. It’s very high on my list for sure.

Angkor Wat its build by Khmer King Suryavarman ll , around the year , 1110-1150. Ancient Khmer and Ancient Indian were having a long relationship by trade as spices, silks produce and diplomatic relation. Ancient Indian merchandises sailers to Khmer Empire and share its Hinduism belief between Khmer Empire later Khmer King were tolerated Hinduism and accepted within Buddhism religion. Angkor Wat is build by Khmer King Suryavarman ll its architectural might have a slight influence of Hinduism statues but it doesn’t meant that India build it . Angkor Wat inscriptions and its epics reflect the histories of Khmer Empire Civilization full of Khmers statues engraving all over the murals of Angkor Wat. Thank you so much for this beautiful content .

I hope you enjoyed it. I had to be brief in the video or else it would’ve been several hours. This is such an amazing place.
The trade with India, was it done over lad or all by sea? It’s interesting that China didn’t have as much influence. Ayutthaya was connected to China through trade up the Chaophraya River but they also had trade with Persia and counties to the west of them. India never seemed to exert much influence on them compared to the Khmer. I find it interesting because of the close proximity of the 2 kingdoms but different external influences via trade.

Thank you ! The Ancient India were doing trade through sea from the Mekong River it’s an Trans- Boundary River in East Asia and South East Asia!
Indeed! yes, China was always fascinating by Khmer Empire since histories. My mother recall that China Emperor has long respect for Ancient Khmer King because of its ancient Khmer histories known that Khmer Kings were powerful as Khmer King Jayvarman Vll (born c 1120- Decease - c 1220) one of the most forceful and productive Khmer Kings. He expanded most of he’s territorial to some most extended of half part of South East Asia. Also he’s build numerous Temples as Angkor Tum , Highway, House refuge , Healthcare system.etc..
If you still by Angkor Wat you can ask Khmers guide or Khmers historians to show you wich Temple has its Healthcare inscriptions engraving on the stone of the temples I don’t recall wich one but since my past visit I seen its epics of Khmer Healthcare engraving on the stone .

Khmer Empire it’s massive that conclude it was heavily influencial Civilization.

Hey, Since you are so intrigued with ancient histories, What do you think about the Angkor Wat replica in Thailand is being built, i don't mean to put in the spot, just curious about how people from the west think about it. A lot of controversy, does it worth a visit from people from the west?

I’m of two minds when it comes to a modern version of Angkor being built. On one hand I love seeing what man can build when they want to. Grand scale projects like this fascinate me. On the other hand it concerns me because I know the attitude of Thais towards Cambodia. King Rama IV planned to take Angkor apart and move it to Bangkok to erase the Khmer legacy. He sent 2 parties to Angkor to study how to do it and they were attacked by the locals and the plan was scrapped. So building this one is yet another way to say “look at this we built Angkor while Cambodia can’t build anything, so it’s ours”. Here is the article about it.
      pathsunwritten.com/bangkok-angkor-wat/
I know how things end when one group of people is seen as lessor people. War and much worse come from it. Not that this one temple will start a war but it probably isn’t meant to bring peace and harmony between the two countries.
