- UPDATE: Athearn has announced another production run of these models! They are expected to be delivered in late 2023 (although, as with any early announcement, that date may change). You can pre-order yours through BC Hobbies by phone, email, or in person at our store. (Note: We are only able to ship within Canada at this time, so if you live outside of Canada, you should pre-order the model directly through Athearn instead.)

I just got one of these today, and it runs great. It can pull a max of 13 cars on prototypical in even track
It looks to have a lot of features from N&W and Southern Railway 2-8-0 locomotives. If anyone wants to, they could modify one to look like a Southern Railway G class consolidation, or even an N&W G class.
Excellent review. Finally, someone well articulated (especially for non English-speaking-natives) who has something to say about his model, not just promoting. Great job !
I’m happy they’re re releasing these! I never got the chance to get one when they first dropped
Me too! I think I got one of the last of the previous run.
I figured out something for the squeaking noise. Several manufacturers make conductive lubricants, I got Bachmann's "Conductive Contact Lube" and put it on the insides of all the wheels, as well as the pilot axle. Now the squeaking's gone and all that's left is a bit of a whine from the motor.
That's great to know! If mine ever starts squeaking again, I'll have to try that.
Today I got this exact locomotive with DCC and sound! Thank you for posting this video in the first place, else I wouldn't have this beautiful locomotive.
(for those of you who don't know, I posted on christmas day)
Thank you for the review of this great looking locomotive!
The MDC kit that this locomotive is based off of are excellent pullers, due to the plastic incased die cast boiler, and pull excellently without the traction tires.( I own several) the kit’s only drawback was the use of brass drivers and tender wheels, which require a lot of maintenance. Later versions had replaced the brass with nickel silver tires on the loco. NWSL produced a regear kit for it which improved the low speed performance. An appropriate sized can motor was also a big help. This was definitely a “plain Jane” and with the addition of some investment castings, could definitely be the star of the show for a relatively small investment. I really do miss the MDC “ blue box kits”.
Man that’s a good looking model, great video!
These Run Great!, I put a Bachmann 4-6-0 boiler on this and you can get pretty close to a DRGW C-29 or Great Western Sugar 51 or 52. I personally think they look much better with the Bachmann boiler. One of mine has the stock open frame motor and the other a stock can motor; both run very smoothly with DCC.
Awesome! That Bachmann kitbash sounds really cool.
Great video, and great loco. Congrats !
i have both 687 & 719, these are great models for the value!
Nice review, sir.. Thanks, M
Keep it up!
athearn just started to re-production that model and hope to put them back on the shelves real soon
Well they’re ready for pre order RIGHT NOW
@@BMMEC6000 that is great
@@thememegenerator7993 yep! I think they’re due in by the end of September
@@BMMEC6000 that is good to hear
@@thememegenerator7993 yes indeed. I got one of the V&T ones.
I have an older version, with a die cast boiler. It has DCC and sound but the sound decoder 🎃is busted.
My Athearn 2-8-0 Consolation is also Santa Fe 687
I recently managed to snag one of these myself. I noticed a squeaking noise, too, so it's not just yours. That's really my only complaint about it.
Are there still Athearn HO 2-8-0 Consolidations available, will there be some on the BCHobbies store?
I believe Athearn is planning another production run of these, but there are none currently available.
I'm actually looking for an athearn 2-6-0 mogul that I've heard they produced. If you could review one, or simply refer me to where I can find one, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank u.
Athearn has recently announced a new production run of those. Pre-orders are open now. The delivery dates haven't been announced yet, as far as I know.
If you want one right away, you might be able to find one on eBay. They haven't been produced for several years, and I doubt any hobby dealers have new stock left.
Have you done any upgrades?
Since making this video, I did do some cosmetic mods to the loco and backdate it a bit. You can see it in this video on my personal channel: czcams.com/video/yfOS0kjmjB8/video.html
i have good news for anyone who wants to get one today
Bonjour, le modèle de cette loco est celui du film Retour Vers Le Futur III ? Car je la cherche en Ho (sans vraiment la rechercher)
Unfortunately, no. The engine used in the movie was Sierra Railway #3, a 4-6-0, and there are no models of it currently on the market in any scale. Mantua made an HO scale version many years ago, but it was very oversized and poorly detailed.
@@bchobbies Ok, thanks
Are there any N de M versions
Not from the factory, but it wouldn't be too hard to paint one.
@@bchobbies Aw man, although you are right easiest way to make is with a label maker.
Where is this model available?
Unfortunately, the manufacturer no longer has any available. There are a few examples still for sale on eBay. I suggest grabbing one while you can.
@@bchobbies Dear Mike:
Thanks for your response.
David
Michael:
Thanks again for your time. I found one at TrainLife.com.
Now all I have to do is change it to the Washington & Old Dominion Rwy. livery.
David
@@DavidLHurt Glad to hear you were able to find one! It's a great little loco.
How much did it cost?
These are no longer available new, but when they do turn up, they usually go for around $250 to $300 CAD.
@@bchobbies thx but I have one now and Emm I got it for 19 dollars my guy. And it runs very good
@@electricgaming9914 Congrats, that's a heck of a deal!
@@bchobbies is it really?
@@bchobbies I just thought it was something that was very common or something
