  • I found this gem in a box of 8mm films given to me for a transfer job to DVD. It's a series of "run what ya brung" drag races at Island Dragway, Great Meadows, NJ in 1962. The guy I'm doing the job for was driving the blue '62 Impala SS 409. Enjoy!

I owned a 59 thunderbird like the one in this video. I ran that thing 140mph everynight on the way home. It felt like it was floating on air. Man the good ole days. Rich

Reminds me of attending my first drag event at 'double D'....that was Detroit Dragway in 1962.Seen Dyno Don Nicholson driving a 409 Chevy Biscayne & the Super Super Stock winner was another 409 from Arizona. They were goin' 12s then & we thought it was sooo fast.

Yup, newest ride in this neet video is '62. Thanks Rich Galdi for convert and post and Thanks 626262impala for hanging onto the old 8mm. Now that you have it saved digital and friends can see this until your days are done. I'm an old pfart too and like a fool, didn't keep my stuff. Thanks again :-)

This is not only a super video, but one of few that has not a negative comment. Growing up in Bergenfield, my freinds and I would make the weekly commute to Island in '61 and '62 out rt46(before I80 was completed). We'd have breakfast at the Hacketstown Diner spend the day in the pits and always return with white shoe polish on the windshield and left rear window indicating the class. I ran a C/G (gas) and then a B/A (altered), both street legal. We graduated in '62 and went then separate ways.

There's quite a few vintage racing video's out there, but this one ranks among the best. Thanks much gents for keeping the old 8mm, and to Rich for converting to digital then posting for our fun and help us remember our young and fun times.

I raced street legal motorcycles at Island Dragway from 1999 to 2020, and still hold the track speed record for ALL motorcycles at 168 mph. I did this as a 65 year old on my street legal (no slick, no wheelie bar) 2003 Suzuki GSX-R1000 using a 60 hp nitrous shot. I also held the ET record set in 2019 at 8.50 seconds in August of 2019 at age 69 without NOS or a turbo. I believe someone has gone quicker since then, but I don't think anyone will go faster than 168 mph on a bike since there is only 1,800 feet to stop. I had a bad crash on August 23, 2019 trying to stop from 162 mph on a track wet with late night dew that put me in the hospital for a month. But I came back in 2020 at age 70 and made my final pass before selling my bike and moving to Florida. I closed out my motorcycle racing career with a final pass of 8.60 seconds at 160 mph, then hung up my helmet for good. On another note, the crowds you see in this awesome video are rarely seen at Island, or any other track today. The stands are, sadly, not full even at an NHRA national event with Top Fuel Dragsters and Nitro Funny Cars. The NHRA today is struggling to fill out a 16 car field in those two Pro classes. The 1960s truly were the golden age of drag racing, and Island Dragway was center stage in that era.

Great music and video. If my memory is correct Island dragway opened right around 1962. The green and white 55 looks a lot like a car I had and raced back then. I remember the pits were full of trees then. Sure brings back some nice memories.

By absolute dumb luck ! I was at Island Dragway with fellow members of the Road Rebels Auto Club from Hawthorne, NJ 'THIS VERY DAY'. Standing on the roof of my 'cherry' 49 Plymouth to watch Don Garlits and his Winds Jammer 1. Little did we know, so many years ago, that we were watching history made. Breaking 200 mph in the quarter mile. Thanks so much for posting this video.

Bob: I really don't know either. My buddy has taken some lately of my Nova and his Gran Prix (under "Slimbo5"), but they are digital and are easily put on the computer. I guess yours are 8mm or VHS and have to be changed first. Too bad; I'd love to see if my '61 Chevy is in any of them. - Charlie

Great film..!! The blue dragster appears to be the Kulp-Nocentino-Van "Outlaw" out of Bristol PA. If so, I believe the engine and chassis were built by Jack Kulp not Dragmaster. Any chance I could get a copy of this DVD? My late father was Jack Kulp the owner/builder of the Kulp-Nocentino-Van "Outlaw". I'm always looking for memorabilia involving my Dad. Thanks.

Great film! You have some rare footage of a Dragmaster dragster- the blue 'slingshot' dragster uses a custom frame/chassis from Dode Martin and Jim Nelson-the dragmasters. (see the current issue of Rodders Journal for more about them.) I just interviewed them last week for a tv/film project-(www.vintageventuremedia.com) They would enjoy seeing this great old footage! Thanks for sharing!
