Excellent video! I've been to the US Nationals several times with my Dad. We went every year up until a few years ago because of his health. He never missed one since 1961 until just a few years ago and always tells me the stories of the good ole days. Its great to finally see it though.
In regard to the comment by roadstarman; heck, many of the local tracks have been gone for a long time now. Our local track in Charlotte, Shuffletown was 1 popular strip even into the 80's, but it's been closed for over 20 yrs now. Back in it's heyday, it was packed EVERY Sunday! [give a listen to the Southern drawl of the announcer, he added a distinctive flavor to every race & I believe from the 60's till they closed, he was always the announcer->can't remember his name though] If we don't get some new blood & cars into the drag racing scene, in time, it may dwindle down to only a few national events per year. It is very sad, but most of today's young only care about what electronic gadgets a car comes with................bummer.
@osubrownfan Wish I could find the video, but you reminded me of it. Somewhere on here there is an in car run down the strip of Ronny Sox, in his early SS days, showing him row through a four speed. It's spooky to watch, thinking that box cant take that kind of torture. But you are right, he made it work!
@jamespetit1 Yes, it will never be that way again. I think in another twnety years or so, it will be gone at the local level, if not before then. Other than the sons of a few current racers, there's no new blood coming in to the sport. There is an okay turnout for bigger events, but on a regular weekend, it's getting dismal. Very sad.
@ 3:00 Ken McLellan was a good friend of mine, but I had never seen his 68 Mustang.......thank you so much for sharing this. Those were the days !!
Thanks for posting. I'd give ANYTHING for those days, Make a grown man wanna cry because it will never be again...
