- Every Friday night, the Hirsch family invites another “perfect” girl to Shabbat dinner in the hopes that their son will marry a nice Jewish girl. This is put to an end when their son finally reveals that he is already seeing someone, and his parents can’t wait to meet the lucky lady - except she is actually a guy. His parents are distraught, but when reality sets in they begin to blame each other for their son’s sexuality.

I didn't think this would be as genuinely touching, well acted and sincerely humorous. Loved it.
The parents are both excellent actors, so they carry the movie. Plus it stays comedic, and doesn't drift into the dramatic or maudlin.

Even though it's an old movie! It mirrors reality well, a reality that is still not well understood today (unfortunately) I honestly liked the part where Nelson's mother makes that statement! It expresses well what open-minded parents have to feel about their children who have a different sexual orientation 😊

Love this movie, though the parent’s struggles are hard to watch (but that’s the point, I know). Also - I noticed they cut out a couple scenes at 9:35 and at 1:04:52 so I was wondering why and what happened? This is the only version I’ve been able to find and I’m so curious what I’m missing.

This movie is not funny yet sad because if how long it took them, until the last act, to understand they still love their child.
The mother was willing to accept early on but fully accepted towards the end.

I have seen this excellent film before, and it is still so funny the second time around. I love the Jewish sense of humour. I couldn't stop laughing. Well done to everybody involved in its making. The actors were brilliant.
This is a beautiful film. I think there should be more gay films that have happy endings. It is wonderful to see the way the two families overcome the difficulties and that in the end love is the only way and that everyone should have the freedom to love who they wish to love.
