    Hey, fellow dog fanciers and whippeteers! My name is Adriana, proudly owned by 8 gorgeous whippets, and I have been surrounded by pets since day 1. I was blessed to have a whippet for 13 yrs. She was 7 weeks old when I got her. I got her from a breeder that checked our background She was very particular as to who could buy one. We went to her home and were interviewed. We also spent several hours with the dogs. I loved my Whippet. She was extremely smart. She knew all her toys by name and would the right one out of her toy box when we asked her. She was extremely loving and kind. I wouldn’t hesitate to have another Whippy . Thank you so much for letting others know about these precious babies.

    This video confirmed my thoughts on owning a whippet. I have always admired them from afar, and now, through your channel, enjoyed getting to know them up close. Such a gift. However, I am aware that I will never have a Whippet of my own. Not least because I am 69 years old and not as adaptable as Whippet would need from me. So your pack is my beloved pack. Again, thank you for this gift. One thing I think you should have mentioned here is how much having a sense of humor is such a good match for Whippets. You embody that Addie.😂🥰

      @@ShowPaws I know a lot of people who have whippets near me, and I fell completely in love with the breed, especially their affectionate, loyal character and elegant deportment. Thank you for your advice. I’ve wanted a whippet for years. My first dog was a Min Pin he was most definitely a challenge raising but ended up being my best boy ever, he just passed and I miss the companionship. Revisiting the idea of a Whippet as they seem similar to the Min Pins quirks and behaviors. Wish me luck. Thank you again.

    My whippet just turned 1.5. We’re almost through the puppy stage and she’s finally becoming a couch potato, but I greatly underestimated whippet puppies. I thought she’d be like my golden or dachshund puppies I had awhile back but no she was total chaos. Sweet, lovable and affectionate chaos

    Ive had Whippets off and on, mostly on for 40 years and you are absoulty correct. They are wonderful dogs if you understand their proclivities and are willing to work with them. I have greyhounds currently and they are a completely different dog even with their simulare shape, not considering size. I love both breeds as I seem to be hooked on sight hounds.

    I love your videos! Absolutely agree with you. This is my first Whippet (now 9.5 months old) though I have had several breeds over my 40 years of showing and breeding dogs. Yes, my Whippet is affectionate and cuddly and playful and fun, but he also is into >everything< with that long snoot! Paws up on every counter despite being told thousands of times "no". He barks at me if he's bored, until he gets entertained. He is very smart and usually understands exactly what I'm asking of him, but he will do it or not, as he pleases. Lucky for him he's so adorable in between being naughty, but I'm looking forward to the "adult" stage, I have to admit!

      I'm convinced all whippets share the same brain cells, and yes, don't worry. Once you get through the teen stage, they become much easier to live in harmony with 🤣 for the most part..... mine is nearly 3 and still likes to bark for attention and still tries to get into and steal things

    We have been lucky in that our two boys aren't particularly sensitive and are very calm for youngsters (14mths and 11mths). No raptor./terror phase so far and while the elder isn't a great fan of us going out and leaving him (I work from home), no real separation anxiety or destructive behaviour when we're out. Both enjoy a bit of dig in the garden and the younger in particular will chew shoes/caps/pens if left in his vicinity. He has a very distinctive 'trot' dashing off to another room when he grabs a treasure and wants to escape before you take it off him :)
    However the independence you speak of is absolutely spot on with ours. You can see them weighing up if they want to come when called or ignoring you totally if they're doing something they find more fascinating than your request. Mostly they oblige thankfully. I'm very grateful our breeder has a 50 year history with Whippets and has always bred for a healthy dog with a calm and confident temperament so her dogs do seem to be less highly strung than some. Of course, how they are raised also can be a major consideration too. They're lovely dogs and can't imagine life without them.

    both of my dogs passed recently (about a year ago), a golden retriever and a rescue who was a mix of a lot of hunting dogs and sighthounds. i live with my family still and they did not know how to deal with the rescue's needs for training and play. it took me some time to understand him as well. he might have been quite brutish to the golden retriever who refused to wrestle with teeth involved, but they loved each other. just their styles of play werent so compatible. once a visitor brought her smaller dog who was also a mix of similar breeds, only half the size of him. and he was so gentle and they played perfectly.
    i came to understand that he was very sensitive. and if people raised their voice at him, he would double down on what he was doing. he thought of his own goals first, but was constantly absorbing the moods of us in the family and after doing something wrong visibly looked guilty and would settle down in bed without anyone asking.
    i would spend nights sometimes just calming him down if someone raised their voice and talking softly to him. wrestling in his bed with him, and teaching him how to be gentle while still getting to be vocal and snappy.
    once, the two dogs collided at full speed and the rescue's shoulder almost completely snapped. as soon as he was hurt, he instantly stopped chasing and came right to me, so i knew he was really hurt. i stayed up all night with him as he couldnt sleep from the pain.
    from that point on he and i got closer every day. he really mellowed out and became much more okay with coming to me when he was worried or trying to tell me something.
    that to me is the ideal relationship with a dog. one that has rules you have to learn to come to a mutual understanding of one another. truly communicate and do things together. not jut a dog you tell what to do and it simply does it.
    i think i have the patience and care for a whippet in the future when i live with my girlfriend. we both are very patient and understanding. as well as living in an area with lots of space to run around. as well as being in regular physical contact with her family, so if for whatever reason both of us are out of the house for hours, we can have the parents mind the dog for those few hours, as we would be spending a lot of time with the parents while the dog is there anyway.
    do you think this is along the right lines for a relationship with a whippet? what research do you recommend i look into that people often skip over?

    • @ShowPaws

    This is so correct 😂 so many people recommend a whippet as a first-time dog (I would never recommend a whippet for someone that has never had a dog before) we done months of research before getting frankie so we knew what we were getting ourselves into even though as a family we have never had a dog before him. A whippet is definitely not for the light-hearted 😂❤ Frankie, is nearly 3 and is so much better now. Not as nervous and had decided to start eating reliably again 😂

    This video randomly popped up in my CZcams feed. It's spot on. It drives me nuts seeing the "Should I get a whippet?" threads on places like Reddit, and a lot of people downplay just how challenging these dogs can be, especially as puppies. I've also have Italian Greyhounds, and IGs are a leaps and bounds easier to deal with than whippets. I would get a whippet again in an instant, but I wouldn't recommend them to most people, unless you have a verify specific lifestyle that is compatible with a whippet (work from home, fenced in backyard with tall fences, etc).

    • @ShowPaws
      @ShowPaws  Před 21 dnem

      Absolutely! The energy levels, brains and creativity of a young whippet should not be underestimated. Unfortunately some owners learn the hard way. Like all breeds, whippets are not for everyone, no matter how easy they seem at first glance.

      another interesting video. What do you think about taking a slightly older dog (4 to 8 months)? I think it might be 'easier' than with a 10 week old puppy? I would be very interested in your opinion on this.

    • @ShowPaws
      @ShowPaws  Před 3 měsíci +4

      Gteat question! I'd say that would be a mixed blessing 😅 Young puppies can be chewy and bity but usually care mostly about sleeping, eating and playing. However, once they start growing (6-12+ months) they seek more from life and that's when most challenges start. They gain confidence then, look for more fun and become more creative. They will also challenge and test you more at that age. A simple example - a 3 month old pup might try to take an object you left in their reach out of curiosity, while an 8 month old will remember that interesting object you placed on the counter 2 days ago and will use creative ways to outsmart you, reach, steal and destroy it. In my experience, 2-5 month old puppies are easier compared to an 8 month old.

      I agree, you can’t compare rescue whippets with those you get from a puppy. My cousin has bred them for years and her pups are all over the world. They are show dogs, agility dogs, and she has trained them to be in movies. I would totally disagree with the assessment of whippets on this site.

    • @ShowPaws
      @ShowPaws  Před 3 měsíci +3

      @thwestbrook5636 I've not once mentioned they are impossible to train 😊 What's important to understand is if you expect a working dog in the body of a sighthound, that's not what you'll get. They require a completely different approach. But for anyone who's raised numerous whippets and truly understands them, then sure, we can train them to do almost anything.

    I've only had one whippet.(since passed many years ago) I wouldn't hesitate to care for another. Re the 'drama queen' assessment. I didn't know this as a feature of the breed, only that my whippet had the best manners of any dog I've ever known-would do anything to avoid 'getting in trouble', the high sensitivity factor, no doubt. It was almost as though she didn't need training, very intuitive of 'being good'

  • @MaxNormal754
    @MaxNormal754 Před 6 dny

    My family has owned dozens of whippets over the last thirty years. The biggest mistake I see people make with whippets is that they treat them more like humans than dogs, which turns their whippets into sad, timid creatures with behavior issues. I've heard whippet owners say, "I've never seen her play like that before", so many times when I meet a whippet. You have to be a bit of a whippet whisperer to bring out their full personalities. It also helps to get them in pairs instead of just one.

    • @ShowPaws
      @ShowPaws  Před 5 dny

      Very true! Often, the image created by people is of fragile, shaky dogs, whenever they think "whippet". While they can and should be very stable and confident dogs under the right ownership and approach.

    I have a whippet I raised from 8 weeks, it took a solid year of training to get him where I need him. he just needs an hours excercise a day and he will quite happily sleep all day, the only time he barks is when he is playing with me. I think one thing that never gets mentioned is that a whippet will get under the duvet with you and cuddle up to steal your body heat so get used to sharing your bed. I would never want another breed as whippets are so easy going and great with kids, not remotely aggressive with other dogs either.

      Sounds like your persistence has given the wanted result and that's exactly what young whippets need 💞 Sharing a bed and the covers with whippets is something I've mentioned on many occasions, especially for those who believe a whippet should be kept off furniture 😆 It will also be highlighted in this week's video. In my opinion, they are the best heaters also, especially in winter.

    100% accurate! I was one of those who met and loved a couple of middle aged couch potato whippets. Later on in life when I came to furparenting I rescued a young bonded pair of whippets expecting couch potatoes and was shocked to learn that they were like Tassie devils from the loonie toon cartoons… a walk before work, middle of the day, after work and enrichment toys helped manage them and they grew into calm dogs. They are 8 and 7.5yo and mostly couch potatoes now - so long as they get at least one good snifari walk a day with at least a zoom a week.
    Fortunately my two have learned to self soothe and sleep most of the day waiting for me to get back home from work. We have a rock solid strict leaving and returning home routine. I also leave the radio on, plus hide some chew treats and over the years this has worked. We started with small leaving gaps and extended them… a few beds “exploded” through that process though!
    100% agree that other dogs are often not whippet savvy and this can end in tears and vet bills - not happened to mine but enough people in my whippet FB social circle have had their whippets attacked at an off leash park. Whippet play dates become a necessary thing!
    Whippets are absolutely rewarding human companion emotional furkids. ❤
