    Ah how funny; I’m putting together something like this for borzoi vs silkens!
    My only small addition is that Silkens also can compete in ISWS and IABCA conformation, not just UKC :)

      Yeah, I had a hard time deciding how detailed to be! So I would say, nothing about this video is all-inclusive! It’s also very US oriented.

    We have had two Silken Windhounds, thus far, and they are the best dogs we have ever had. Awesome disposition, very kind, rarely bark, get along with all people of all shapes and sizes, and get along with other dogs. Highly recommended.

    This is likely the best youtube breakdown I've seen of these breeds, especially as compared to each other. You clearly know your stuff and I really appreciate that I have something to pull from when I want to recommend a good advisement for people who are into these breeds! Tbh, I feel like you get the silkens and their very...methodic but also shyly-social
    way of thinking and I so, so appreciate that you love them all!

      A whippet mix was my 3rd rescue choice and I ended up adopting a 40lb “whippet/pointer.” Fast forward a year, 20lbs and a breed test - I have a Staffy mix. hahaha. However, I couldn’t have dreamed up a cooler dog. 😊

    I love sighthounds. I recently lost my beloved greyhound and have been in mourning his loss, he was my loyal companion but I could not trust him off leash unless in a fenced area. One thing I have learned, my life is not the same without a dog. Sighthounds have the best temperaments. I just came across the Silken Windhounds today and their versatility and size are making me lean towards a Silken when my heart feels ready to get another dog. This video was very helpful.

  • @scotyfilms
    @scotyfilms Před 2 lety +5

    I think it could be a Silken Windhound for me. I have had experience with both breeds but before I knew about Silkens we focused on getting a Whippet as we had looked after one for months at a time and she was an awesome dog. We really wanted a puppy and could not wait any longer so my husband went ahead and put a deposit on a Saluki puppy. I love our Saluki to bits but she is not the easiest dog to deal with. Since the age of 2, although very well socialized she has become a bit fearful of other dogs. She was also extremely hard to house train. I have to be very selective as to where to let her off leash as she can get spooked and will run. There are two Wind hounds in our town and I agree with everything you have said about them. They seem more trustworthy off leash, calmer, not as easily spooked and very attached to they owners. I would love to take a dog into care homes or school but she is just not that social with people she does not know. I do know that her sister has a different personality so maybe it is just the way she is and that is ok as she is my heart dog and I could not love her more. A great video.

      We lost our retired greyhound June 2021 and we are still broken hearted. Hopefully you will find a new love, we are thinking of trying a smaller breed as we are getting older but suspect, sadly, part of the reason our Grey was so lovely was her racing days. Maybe just time for a pound dog.. Definitely have a hole in my heart.

      I totally agree. We had 4 at one time but now down to 1. I just love them to bits except I don't agree about hair loss. That was the one thing that bothered me having light coloured tile floors- I am always vacuuming up fur but I am not complaining. The other issue I have is how much space 1 smallish Whippet takes up on the bed!!! he demands more than 1/3rd of the bed all to himself. As the house is his and we are just his guests we put up with it. 😂

    • @AshleyWilliams-xq7lj
      @AshleyWilliams-xq7lj Před rokem +8

      Silkens have special fur though. It never matts unless food gets stuck in it. I don't even have to brush her, but I do anyway to keep fur from getting everywhere. She does shed a lot, I admit. I've been told not to use topical flea/tick treatments on sighthounds, so I use Bravecto.

    I love your comparison. But I was really surprised due to the silken windsprite being quite a new dog breed there seems to be quite some variation in them. Over here in europe they tend to have less coat and look more like a long haired version of a whippet. Yours also seem to have some difference in body structure than the ones breeders offer in germany.

      @@airbenderdogs Thank you! I would MUCH prefer the coat of a whippet as I am a long time IG and retired racing greyhound owner (I think I have had about 10 of them) I really liked what you mentioned about a Silken being better off leash. It's one thing that I really don't like about my lab. She is so distracted with smells that her ears literally stop working. So despite 4 years of working hard on recall, she doesn't have a great one AT ALL. My first IG was fantastic off leash (which is rare I'm sure) as were most of my full greyhounds. Likely because they lived off leash on huge fenced acreage... They were just used to it... I'm sure I could get used to a silken coat. I got used to a labrador!! hehe

The black & white whippet is extremely beautiful. The black & white brindle is also STUPENDOUS!. I also love greyhounds, borzoids, salukies and.... now... silken windhounds. My wife and I are getting a silken wind hound in a few months! I’m hearing a lot of contradictory stuff regarding silkens off leash. Some people say they’re great off leash and don’t want to stray too far from you, and others say you must never let them off leash due their “high prey drive”. Do you have any thoughts on this? Is this a “depends on the dog” type of thing? Thanks!

      Most silkens I know are good off leash, I own a Galgo Español and I always got told that there is a high possiblity that I will never be able to let her off leash, especially since I got her when she was already 3years old. It sure also depends on the dog but my galga was easy to recall right after 1 months when she started to become less afraid of everything, prey thrive was never this much of a problem (honestly till now she never chased anything but birds who can easily fly away butthis is rather unusual). Is there a fenced area nearby or do you own a big enough garden for training or the rather small possibility that it does not work out well? I know a lot of sighthounds and most have a decent recall and all can be let off leash in large, flat areas (where we can check for small animalis before letting them off leash), but only a few can be trusted in woods. Silkens that already are trained as a puppy should be fine and I would not worry too much. :). Wish you a lot of fun with your sighthound, you will probably fall in love with them immediately.

    What about the Silken Windsprite? Would they be closer to the whippet or windhound temperment?

    • @airbenderdogs

      I would probably put all these breeds on a Borzoi- whippet spectrum.

    Have you noticed more of a tendency towards anxiety, timidness, or sensitivity to new things or environments in one breed than the other? My current dog (a shelter mutt) is incredibly quick to form negative associations and difficult to desensitize, and he is generally very hesitant to step onto new textures, touch new things like kayaks, etc. Obviously early socialization plays a big role in that, but is that anxiety or timidness a common trait in either breed?

    • @airbenderdogs
      @airbenderdogs  Před rokem +1

      I don’t think either breed as a whole tends more towards anxiousness, more so it’s key to find a breeder that both breeds dogs with non-anxious temperaments and has a solid puppy-raising program.

      They actually don’t exist in Australia- many people have been interested in bringing them over but the cost has been prohibitive. Anyone in Australia claiming to breed them unfortunately is scamming :(

    I recently bought our first dog, an unwanted pup, whippet X Jack Russell! He absolutely loves running at 100mph, but if he runs for too long he gets loads of pain in his back legs. Cramp maybe, or joint pain? Do you have any ideas? He is 9 months old.x

      I have read that some very active breeds shouldn't be allowed to over exercise when puppies when they are growing so quickly, because if they over do it, it can cause serious issues than can affect them for life. My parents' German Shorthair Pointer over exercised as a pup, when he was under a year old, which is when they are most susceptible to issues like this,, and he had trouble with his back legs for the rest of his life. He had to have surgery on one of his legs and pins put in. He suffered with a lot of pain.

    How long do you go out with each dog per day? And how long is the minimum for these breeds to go out each day, to be so calm indoor? And how much do the breeds need to run free?

    • @airbenderdogs
      @airbenderdogs  Před rokem +2

      Not all of our dogs do outings each day but we live on some land so they get to run a lot each day. The amount of exercise needed will vary by dog but young puppies pretty much need free access to running in a safely enclosed area.

      Borzois were popular more in the late 20th C in UK than they are now...I haven't seen a Borzoi in about 20 years...The film is worth looking for for an historical perspective. Wolves were so common in Siberia &c then.
