That "she doesn't love Clark, she loves Superman" actually had, I think, the best answer in season 3 of the 90's Lois and Clark show that you malign so much. After Lois finds out who he is.
Clark: How do you think I felt, keeping it secret, watching you pine after Superman.
Lois: But you are Superman, so why do you care?
Clark: Superman is what I can do. Clark Kent is who I am.
Chris Check
That’s actually a really good line.
Cheesiness and low budget aside, it had some pretty solid writing for the most part. A lot of people focus on the silver age level ridiculous episodes but the show really worked to explore the development of Clark and Lois's relationship.
One cute moment is Clark admitting he's a virgin whose been waiting for their wedding night, and she suddenly feels bad for having waited but quickly reminds her she really didn't need to emulate him so much cause he loved her for who she was and how she was her own person so different from him.
Their struggle to actually enjoy their honeymoon without both trying to research a story was both sweet and pretty funny.
The amnesia, frog-eating clone and wedding delay we shall never speak of...
@Nico Walter @Charles Unglaub May your A.I systems be corrupted and turn upon your creators for all time.
A world where Sal is not able to summon annotations with the wave of his hand...The dream is collapsing. This must be another level of Hell.
4 minutes in and it seems like Sal has already snapped... and he hasn't actually started talking about the book. This is going to be good.
haw
Yes indeed.
"Tonight when we have sex could you call me the One Above All", lmfao. Sal you killed me when you said that.
Everytime Sal says "Father Leone" I can't help but sing "left a note on the door saying sonny come out to the country".
"For tonight, can you call me big daddy?"
-Sal Crivelli
@3:53 - SO GOOD!
I'm tired of "interesting, gritty, deep, jaded, conflicted" characters - give me a guy who grew up on a farm. A guy with a straight moral compass and a spine. It would be refreshing.
It's the exact opposite for some people but I get u
@Brian Ward I’m right with you! Save the edginess for characters that were built for it. The big blue Boy Scout shouldn’t be questioning what’s right and wrong! The only thing he should wonder is, “Fuck, did I hit that guy too hard?”
I like Lois and Clark. I know its 100% cheese, but it's also inherently Superman. In terms of characterisation somehow that incredibly budget TV (that I watched reruns of with my mum when I was sick) depicted Superman better than the $250 million movie Batman V Superman. It's kinda weird because I was born a year after that show finished airing and somehow I have nostalgia for it :)
I think I lost it when you guys brought up General Zod having a Z on his chest. Thank you for covering this, well, to be frank, overwritten, heavy-handed story. In a lot of ways Brian Azzarello's approach to Superman feels synonymous with how a lot of modern writers/storytellers tackle him:
"Superman is sad" ---- Because being happy and optimistic makes you a "Mary Sue"
"Superman is God" --- Christ allegories for the sake of "sophistication", in reality has more in common with Moses
"Superman isn't human" --- Even though he was raised AS a human with two HUMAN parents...
I'm not going to start a massive debate here, but I think it's pretty obvious where this paradigm has been recently seen; especially in movies and comicbooks. This isn't to say Superman shouldn't have flaws or feel challenged... but I am saying this shit is getting f***ing old and do something else.
(P.S. Mr. Orr is a reoccurring character in Azarrello's "Lex Luthor: Man of Steel" story as well as a brief cameo in issue 3 of the New 52's relaunch of Justice League - but then again, it's forgiven no one would remember because that story was.... yeah...)
I immediately just started watching as soon as I got the notification. I'm pretty sure i'm officially a Comic Pop fanboy now.
+Kevin Marques Me too man, I got really excited when I saw a new episode up. I just always miss the live shows.
The production value of these videos is amazing and the content is consistently good and interesting. I am honestly surprised that this channel doesn't have hundreds of thousands of subscribers by now
+Human987 We appreciate it!
AS a die-hard Superman fan, I had to read this 3 or 4 times in order to understand what the $#$#%* happen under all the pretentious dialogue.
By reading a book over and over again, it's only going to improve your reading comprehension.Since when it's a bad thing ?
Batman darkest night, which came out today, led me to another back issues which lead me to dark knight 3 which then lead me here. Back issues are so rewatchable it's both amazing but hinders getting any work done on a wednesday
Azzarello clearly doesn’t get or doesn’t like Superman
I can't stand all the hate that superman gets. People consistently complain how "boring" he is and how "unrelatable" he is... But when writers attempt to make him more relatable or just try to interpret superman in a new way the same comic fan boys complain that you're changing the superman they grew up reading. I don't get it.
People just can't decided if they want him to be relatable or an ideal to aspired. Personally i like Superman because he does what he does, for pure conviction, for a genuine desire to help people an save the world, thats why he is my favorite to be honest.
+firmbiz000 Also doesn't help that many writers seems to think that relatable means, make him an ashole sometimes, also give him an edge at the character is a dangerous terrotory because he could ended being seeing as a bully.
That phantom zone argument had me dying lol. If there is something there then it cant be nothingness by definition!!
Manhunter is one of my favorites on the justice league i wish people had more interest in him.
Azzarello also wrote 100 Bullets and the New 52 Wonder Woman. Both I would highly recommend.
Their talking about doing a movie Staring Tom Hardy
🎶 I can't stand to fly, I'm not that naive. 🎶
The sad Superman anthem.
Recently discovered this channel. Great content and production value. Really hope this channel blows up. They deserve it.
Thanks Ash!
What's with Jim Lee rocking out the art on these weird ass books? The other one I'm thinking of is of course All-Star Batman and Robin. I've only enjoyed Azzarello on his New 52 Wonder Woman run. For some reason, that book hit me hard and I loved it (probably Cliff Chiang's art that helped.)
+Jeff Batista when I started his WW I flipped through and I thought the art looked weird, but the story got me, and I've enjoyed it so far
Fred Bushee "the art looked weird", different strokes. The art is a very key part of that book that I loved. Cliff Chiang knocked it out for me. I had that kind of reaction to She Hulk when it came out. I loved the writing and characters, but the art looked like a 4 yr old drew it.
I loved All Star Batman And Robin because of the art (I mean who doesn't love Jim Lee) and Frank Miller wrote such a bad book it was almost good because it was so laughable
I probably would have like the Azzarello run if he didn't nuke the Wonder Woman mythos from orbit in the first five issues. But he did, so I hate it.
Starting a new job in the morning, so this'll brighten up my night for sure.
+Grievousish Good luck!
ComicPOP! Thanks a bunch! First day turned out well.
Grievousish Awesome! Keep it up!
Been watching all the back issue videos over the past week or two. Love them so much Sal, you guys are all awesome for doing these videos. Saw this in my inbox and was like, yay more goodness from Sal and company!
I truly wonder why the channel isn't bigger by now. You put out great comics content, back issues alone is a great treasure of the internets. You should put Benny and Rob and Faust in a room and take all their subscribers somehow. Also, back issues.
he curses and doesn't censor himself (as it should be)
family friendly channels draw in more subscribers.
I suppose that's true. But some of the biggest channels here on CZcams have people who curse up a storm. So I don't see Sal's F bombs etc really keeping the channel from expanding much.
Then again, maybe you are right.
+Lord LOC look at ray William Johnson and pewdiepie. they curse like crazy, but they censor it which "makes it OK". if your channel is considered family friendly by CZcams, then minors can click on your videos. imagine if ray William Johnson and pewdiepie stopped censoring themselves? they'd probably lose 75% of their views. their main fan base is 13 yr olds.
Said it before, I'll say it again. DC has the new movies wrong. Man of Steel 2 should be Luthor rebuilding the city while salvaging Zodd's ships. He recovers Brainiac in them. Man of Steel 3 should be Luthor collecting blood samples from Superman's fight against Brainiac. He tries to clone Superman and creates Doomsday.
That would be awesome...
eh, Bizarro is more interesting than Doomsday, but that's a good idea.
PennyPlunderer I disagree. Because the doomsday movie could lead to Bizarro.
i always thought the title was a homage to For the Man Who has Everything and Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow or maybe that's too much of a stretch.
Saw this episode as soon as the notification popped up! Great job, as always, guys!
I just realised the actual picture for the comic behind you guys is based off that painting of God reaching out with his hand to Adam. This shits so biblical!
+Kaine Parker I noticed that as well. Except it's by Jim Lee, and the ground is exploding for whatever reason.
its because Michael Bay is feeling the holy ghost.
Another great episode, thank you ComicPOP!
You know this is a fantastic channel when one hour of 3 dudes talking about comics goes by in a flash. Great work dudes and awesome channel. I never really took to these types of channel's but ComicPOP sticks out and got a new subscriber. Looking forward to following you guys!
+Trav Nasty Thank you, Trav!
Thanks for doing the book guys! I'm so pumped!
If he wanted to solve a mystery he should've called Batman
You guys are amazing. I was laughing my ass off.
+The Stegman Thanks Steg!
make the phantom zone great again
don't forget to hashtag it!
We were going build a wall around the other zones
@@irishboy_pa and make Superman pay for it
@@smhfirebruh5630 well they aren't going get Zod to pay for it
That's weird I always took the situation where Louis didn't love 'Clark' (the robot thing) wasn't cause she only loved superman but only loved him when he was complete not only partial versions of him. EX: if the robot was of Superman and not Clark it'd be the same.
I hate it when people are like Flash just runs fast. He is so much faster than Superman and he can do everything faster, he would vibrate his hand through Superman and kill him if he wanted to. Furthermore he can also vibrate his hand at the speed of light and punch with the Mass of our entire solar system and use that punch many many times in the blink of an eye. And yes I get that it was a joke.
one more thing....I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!!
I've always thought DC is sitting on a massive opportunity to dig a little deeper with their three most famous "last sons".
Superman, the last son of Krypton, is an allegory for the idealized immigrant (or second-gen immigrant, depending on the interpretation) - he adopts all the values of his new home, doesn't think of himself as anything less or other, always strives to contribute to his community in a positive way and is accepted, even celebrated for his efforts.
J'onn J'onzz, the last son of Mars, is an allegory for the immigrant in reality (or first-gen immigrant) - he has an emotional connection to the society/culture he left, he struggles to adopt the values of his new home, he is only accepted conditionally by the people of his new home if he makes an effort to look and act like them.
Lobo, the last son of Czarnia, is an allegory for the political caricature of the illegal immigrant - he has no (or few) redeeming qualities, he indulges in senseless violence, he has no respect whatsoever for whatever place he happens to be passing through or living in.
There are so many parallels and foils a competent writer could explore between those characters, it's kind of stunning that nothing of the sort has been done.
This video is really old but, this was the first superman solo story i ever read and i loved it . The hopeful stories are probably better but i love this story. Azzarellos wonder woman was also fantastic.
Superman vs The Elite reference?
Bingo. Didn't wanna give it away in the show, lest we use it.
+ComicPOP! i understood that reference because i've watched the animated movie before, lucky me.
So Henry Cavill has stated that this is his favorite Superman book... Makes sense.
Yes! I've been hoping for this story.
Why do you hate Kyle so much? He was the Green Lantern I grew up with and he isn't a super villain like Hal is, nor as bland as John, and unlikeable as Guy? What's with the Kyle hate?
this is by far THE BEST episode ever
These are so entertaining i swear!
If you guys and gal take request, I would like to hear about The OMAC Project. It has been mentioned a few times in past episodes and seem like an interesting story. Thank you ComicPOP family for your kind response the other day. ComicPOP is the coolest!!
freaking love the joker book and luthor was fantastic incredible art and a different take on things that opened my eyes to some darker areas of comics. thats why i will always like brian.... even if he has some stumbles here and there.
I had almost forgoten about this Zod...almost...
''Can you call me by my real name, not my slave name'' LOL! that gave me a sixpack! too funny.
Didn't Brian Azzarello get good reviews for Wonder Woman? That's kind of why I picked this up. I got the hardcover at half off at WonderCon and it had an intro by Azzarello where he explains how Jim Lee approached him about doing this book.
Did you find that there were some similar themes to BvS? That was the first thing I thought when I finished this, which was just after I saw the movie. Especially the going into the Middle East and interfering in the war of two sovereign nations basically to save/find Lois.
I didn't hate it but I can totally appreciate your frustration with people who feel the need to make Superman gritty or something. I love that your love of Superman is so apparent, because I love Superman, and he is the whole reason I started reading comics. 😍
His Wonder Woman run is good except for the part where he made the Amazons murderous rapists and took the paradise out of Paradise Island.
+Chris Check that's about where I stopped reading. I only got in trade not single issues but stopped at Vol 3
It ends much better than it starts, I'd say. The whole run is six volumes.
+Chris Check The most sad about that change, is that is completly inconsecuential for the story, there was potential for drama there an simply didn't go anywhere.
Also, I sent you Final Crisis, you must do it!
+The Stegman We will
I always thought that when superman could “hear” his name in space, he could see the specific vibrations of like “help me superman” ripple across the earths atmosphere so he’d just dart to the epicentre
Clark proposed to Lois before she knew he was Superman because she was in love with Clark Kent.
Got to the Phantom Zone Azzerello
this episode was fantastic.
Question to all if I can ask, what's the best place to buy back issues online if only looking for 6 or less issues to fill in gaps. Nothing special like variants, just normal ones.
brian azarello and frank miller omh my gooooood
Would you guys ever do a book like Sandman on here? I just started it, I know it isn't really a "tights and cape" type comic but I don't know if you could call it indie either
A bad superman story and a hangry Sal. Good ep guys!.
100 bullets is great!
It would be nice to see more Comics from Vertigo and other publishers like Image, IDW, Dark Horse, etc
I had no idea there was a story called Superman: For Tomorrow. First time seeing this Back Issues (and I've been watching since episode 30, guess I missed this one). I wrote my own script for a Superman movie if I was in charge and titled it Superman: For Tomorrow thinking it was an original name. Guess it makes sense given he's the Man of Tomorrow.
Great episode as always, gentlemen. Can I suggest Black Science by Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera for a episode of Back Issues? That is a wicked cool story.
i would love you guys even more if you did the Matt Fraction Hawkeye run that recently finished! I love that book and Hawkeye deserves more love in my opinion.
I finally read this story and I gotta say their is some interesting stuff in the story, but I don’t feel like it should be a Superman story, try another character and it would work better. But the Art is 11/10. I prefer when Azzerello wrote Batman Broken City and his Wonder Woman.
I used to LOVE this book... Now that I hear all of this, it makes me realize I never really understood what the fuck it was... I do still like the scene with the Father at the lake, though.
awesome show fellas.....greetings from the UK!!!! :-)
+Neil Pattinson Thanks Neil!
Sal, I could be wrong, but this is the second time you have referenced The Joker having scars on his mouth in the flashbacks in Death of the Family, and I don't think their intention was making him look like Heath Ledger Joker. The flashback shows Joker in Arkham after recently being apprehended by Batman. Yeah, there is a big scar on his cheek, but it doesn't resemble Heath ledger Joker very much, and after looking back at Death of the Family, I still think the scars in that picture were just to show that Batman beat him up recently. Also, there have been other New 52 flashback stories that show the Joker looking more traditional, before the endgame story arc.
another book I don't have to read because I caught it in your storytime episode. thx guys, where's tiffany? lol
Agents of SHIELD, Bastard Executioner, and Back Issues.
I've had worse Wednesday nights.
How about doing the Longbow Hunters Evocative, lush art and a sophisticated story. Really enjoy watching your shows after a long days work with a good cigar.
Hey what about 100 Bullets!?! That was genius! It's like a more complex and layered Sin City. I will always give Azzarello a pass because of that.
Also the problem isn't with Superman, it's with his writers. If the Greeks and Romans can write about their pantheon of GODS and have that shit still be taught in schools to this very day, I'm sure they can make Superman "interesting".
100 bullets started interesting then proceeded straight up its own arse and finished in a quagmire of why did i bother starting this shit?
Grant Morrison found the formula with All-Star Superman. Too bad nobody seemed to notice and make it canon.
+ComicPop love you guy's. 2 questions for your. Do you know about any Stadic Shock or Batman Beyond books or even a cross over that they do like in the show. And 2 would you guy's ever consider doing a Back Issues on any of those things. I know you might be getting around to Batman Beyond because Batman duh but I would love an interesting Static Back Issues. Thanks Guys. Keep up the greatness
BA loves his Mr. Orr, used him as Luthor's fixer in Luthor.
I absolutely love Azzarello's Wonder Woman, but I haven't heard many good things about his other stuff. That bums me out.
I’ve started to read this 3 times, and just couldn’t finish it.
Do you guys think equis could be the threat in BVS? Changed obviously from the comic to be genetically engineered from Zod by Bats and Lex? Just some thoughts...
12:46 LOL 😂 😂😂
I thought that Brian Azzarello's Wonder Woman and 100 Bullets were solid books. The rest of his stuff doesn't impress me, I agree with you on that.
So Superman was the one that created the vanishing device? If that's the case why was he so sad after one year without knowing how all that people vanished?
if you have limitless dimensions, couldn't you have made the phantom zone an alternative dimension, and then there would be no need for protectors of metropia?
Hey guys! I just discovered this show and absolutely love it! Currently watching every episode! Even if you shit on DC alot haha. You guys should do green lantern rebirth be Geoff Johns!
Yknow, i would read a Manta book thats in the same vein of Joker and Luthor. It could be cool
"It's the badass armor tree."
This show is the Best !!!
Can't wait to reach after just reading the books. Picked up both volumes for half off. Still don't entirely get what the justice League was all concerned about.
I mean are they really concerned about bad press?
Azzarello ended up using mr orr in lex luthor man of steel. Why?
Working in the Middle East and haven't had a Reuben in a long time. Man.
You guys should totally do "JLA: The Nail". That would be awesome.
+Caffeine Swordsman Agreed!
+Caffeine Swordsman Agreed!
How many times is the omac project gonna be
mentioned before you make a back issues about it
+Amin My money is on at least two more.
+Amin my money is on at least someone sent him a copy of the omac project.
Even though the new 52 sucks (imo), this comic shows why it was necessary.
In Ben's paradise Mustard only gets a Cave but Sourkraut gets a frigin' tree
But it's a cave of wonders
+Kid Coheed Oh, Ben.
Here's what also tanks this story......
Jim Lee's art was a big hit on the Batman story Hush. Combined with Jeff Loeb's writing it ushered in a lot of positive vibes for Batman comics.
DC wanted to make something like that for Superman. They announced this story as the next thing coming with Lee's art.
Unfortunately it didn't have Loeb writing it (which was a huge disappointment for me especially). The end result is a very mediocre Superman story with some awesome art.
Definitely a big let down after the awesome Hush story.
OMG guys. U guys mentioning Doomsday's origins reminded me of Superman Hunter/Prey. Please do it if possible. if death of superman is iconic, Superman Hunter/prey is the awesome sequel
I enjoyed it, and own it! We'll have to do that.
46:30 now i'm begging to understand why DC has so many crisis's
Brian Azz's joker was in development at same time
I have to know which episode is the origin of "X has many powers" joke. Is it this one?
Do Jack Kirby's Fourth World stuff!
Sal was TRIGGEREDE
Was sitting on the toilet refreshed my youtube app and saw this instant viewing FANBOYS UNITE!
Hi can you add the subtitles for french people ? Thanks and great video !
Ignore Joker and Luthor: for good Azzarello check out Wonder Woman or 100 Bullets.
