The (WORST) Maddening Experience [Fire Emblem Engage]

- [Rant] I spent a solid 200+ hours playing nothing but Fire Emblem Engage over 2 weeks (I think it was 2 weeks). Throughout my run, I did not use DLC, go online for help, or look up any information about the game or the units. I went strictly off of my own intuition and failed horribly.
I'm not the best player nor am I a knowledge source of the game, in fact if you wanted to get information about the game from me you'd just be doing yourself a disservice. This run was not done as a flex and I regret doing it.
With that being said, please enjoy this rant of my experience playing Engage on Maddening 1st playthrough without any knowledge of the game.

I will add, Alcryst was benched my first playthrough and that was my biggest regret because now he is carrying me through maddening destroying armored units by critting with Luna, turning the initial 0 damage to 45 each hit
I KNEW IT! Mans just refused to crit or proc Luna when I played out of spite
I literally winced when you mentioned not knowing the bulletin boards achievements gave you bond fragements...and i winced even harder when i saw the amount you stacked up without knowing...
Edit: Also, Saphir appreciator, based, same with Merrin love.
I still think about those lost fragments. Always glad to see another Merrin + Saphir enjoyer
@Syhnc Paladin Saphir+Roy literally saved my Maddening run, considering she could oneshot with Ukonvarsa and easily survive the countertake with barely any health left, ready to be healed and Try again. And Merrin is Merrin, she's onr of my favorites in the game. Also, Warrior Anna is actually really good, although yeah, Mage Anna is broken.
Leif's paralogue is really challenging.

Yunaka lowkey a cheat code to get you through the entirety of the game, she dodge tanked the manaketes in Tiki’s dlc, and popped off 3-15% crits and ultimately 1 rounding them, and she hasn’t even went passed level 12 at that point. Hiya Papaya, she is broken.
i did the same because my friend wanted me to do maddening... it was my first fire emblem and i learned alot... mostly how OP chain attacks are and feel like there's half the game i missed because of the single mechanic that saved my entire run. i had characters die before i even had the time crystal lol
the zephia and gris scene hit me way harder than i expected it to.
if you have it in you to try another maddening run... change all your units to backup and eventually hero class, after lvl 5 you get brave assist, and then put lucina's dual assist + corrin's quality time on every single unit to cover your healing... you now have a team that does on average 2,000% true health damage where it ignores stats of both you and the enemy, happens before you actually attack, and if you read sombron's passive where it reduces chain attack damage down to 30% hit rate, 2% hp instead of 5% ... you can still 2 turn him. you're basically just a moving juggernaut that ignores 90% of the mechanics in the game and even when there is a direct counter to your comp you can still do over twice their health bar a turn.
All this time I've been hears stuff about Thieves being OP... but this is definitely based and I'm looking forward to trying it out
Until you realize that chain attacks are locked in to 80% hit rates and as you add more chain attacks, it becomes increasingly difficult to rely on chain attack damage for a kill. It's kinda better to just put units in classes that fit their stats and avoid situations where you need to gamble on chain attacks hitting.

I had a similar experience to you with the achievement sporadic separate was with the arena I didn't realize you could use the arena to raise emblem Bond level haha

Dang, 200 hours. I made some similar mistakes on my first hard mode playthrough, like ditching Anna for not being a good axe user and not finding out about claiming the bond fragments until halfway through the game. I didn't struggle as much since I played very proactively, and didn't do that much enemy phasing, my Yunaka Corrin combo wouldn't be as good if I played on Maddening where enemies ignore 0% hit units. Can't say that I regret much about my first playthrough, aside from letting Panette die on ch13. My first playthrough took 100 hours, currently past halfway on my second playthrough (still hard mode) where I've played at a faster pace and done less paralogues, but I'm using Anna and Jean this time, as Mage Knight and Halberdier. Probably also help that I've made Alear a wolf knight with a cute ponytail
I'll let the Panette death slide. I actually didn't use Yunaka much in my run but I'm gonna try in my next run with her and Zelkov leading. Definitely changing Alear class cuz Divine Dragon just ain't it
@@Syhnc The one other thing I regret in hindsight is that I didn't really use the dragon trait to its full potential in my playthrough, and now that I'm cavalry I can't use the full dragon vein options, until I recruit the last character.
I'm having fun using Panette on this playthrough, originally she died a hero before I could really get to know her. Getting to finally see her in action now feels pretty special

Same thing happened to me with the achievement board, but I got lucky and realized the error about midway through so I only had like 40k saved in my first run.

Say what?😵💫......... I didn't know that Anna could make more money. I been using her all that time and didn't know she have that ability.
With Leif’s paralouge, I just followed tradition and warp skipped it.
It was still really fun though, because you have to more creative about it rather than just warping your boss killer.

I've been doing a no-reset, no time crystal play through my run of the game on maddening. The Ai is too smart for its own good. If they can't do damage to you, they just don't attack like in hard mode. They break you on sub 40%, crit on 2%, all the while I'm losing my best units along the way. I'm on Chapter 20 right now and suffering. Fun game still 9/10. Fav units have to be Yunaka with Timerra growing on me this maddening run.
Edit: Definitely made the same mistake with Anna.
That run sounds like absolute pain and i wish you the best. Also I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who made the Anna mistake
ive done 2 runs on maddening, and its always by ch 22 is when the game feels more annoying with the spawns and freezes, like hours todo 1 map. doing this game blind though sheesh, rough af
Ch10 aka take all your stuff is a difficulty spike so nasty that the next 2 chapters felt like a cakewalk in comparison lol

Hold on, what you mean 200 hours? On ONE Maddening playthrough? How many times did you have to reset the maps?!?!?!?!
Honestly each ch took 3x resets usually: (1) Scout Team To find reinforcements (2) Dry Run (3) Real run. Anything after that was between me and Mila

The clean button was effective
My main mistake was realizing independently Dual Assist + was broken… but not recognizing it was only of use on backup units 😭 I had Lucina on Seadall (non backup) for the longest time and it gave me the false impression dual assist + would allow people who could otherwise not chain attack, chain attack except if engaged with Lucina. So much wasted SP 🥹
I have so many questions... but I do see what you were after so nice thought
