    Dude for 2 years that’s amazing. I just hit my 2 years last week and I don’t think I could do all that myself. I’m actually moving on from my current employer soon to hopefully put myself in a better position to learn the trade and being able to live on my own. This video is inspirational to say the least.
    Update: I just started my new job as an apprentice commercial carpenter a month ago. This place has classes that teach you the trade, and they’re very committed to keeping their employees happy. I’m working with people closer to my age so it’s a lot easier to communicate, and they take the time out to explain the project to you. Very grateful for where I’m at, and I can thank this video for it. It’s given me the encouragement needed to step out of a toxic work environment, and go somewhere that I’m appreciated.

    • @anonymous9739
      @anonymous9739 Před rokem

      @@bunnyhillrock10 I went to Vo-tech for 3 years in high school to get a basic understanding of the trade. (They also do adult classes for 1 year) Once I graduated high school, some people from my class went union to get an apprenticeship, and I got started under a non-union general contractor in my area which gave me on the job training. I loved the work, but I knew I couldn’t reach my full potential there so I went looking for another place to work upon being employed with that guy for two years. I know that a lot of contractors look for at least 2 years of experience, so I at least had that under my belt. I then found the company that I work for now and they offer an apprenticeship program which takes 5 years to complete. Now this is how I went about it, but it’s really about word of mouth in this trade or just researching a lot about what programs are offered within certain companies.

      If you're serious, and aren't going to waste anyone's time, call round all the local REPUTABLE builders and ask if they'd hire an carpentry apprentice. If they say yes ask them what training they would offer - you don't want to end up as a labourer forever - and what they'd pay at each point of progression in your training - yr1, yr 2, etc.. You want to be in school for a part of the week/year (however it works where you are) so you learn the theory as well as the practical.

      In the U.S. being in the trades it's all self motivated. Get out of a state like NY with all union. Look at the data and union areas hold back income and skills. 10 years of labor shortage in front of you so you'll always have a job. Don't say you want to be a carpenter in the west, say you want to be a framer. If you want to move to trim or something else later do that after you've got a few years. Always say yes when the boss asks if you want extra hours

    Is framing the core of carpentry? If not how often do you get to do framing?

    • @certifiedladderholder
      @certifiedladderholder  Před rokem +3

      You can say it is! However there’s quite a few trades that make our trade valuable. As framers we are responsible for putting up the structure that others build off of. The guys before us are the concrete guys. The guys before them are the excavators. The guys after us make our work look pretty. All a matter of perspective my friend. As a framer I frame 99% of the time!

    Can construction workers wear their own hat if they want to or is wearing a hard hat required in california?

    • @certifiedladderholder
      @certifiedladderholder  Před rokem +2

      Well man it’s different in a lot of areas. Typically in a commercial setting you’d be required to wear a hard hat. I’m not located in California so I couldn’t tell you the standard there, but from my own personal knowledge. Working in residential construction is doesn’t matter what we wear. The crews in my area are all private contractors with their own guys

    Do they want you to learn how to lead even if you don’t want to be in a manager position?

    • @certifiedladderholder
      @certifiedladderholder  Před rokem +1

      That’s always one of the main hidden focuses in crews. Investing time and knowledge into new guys so that they can eventually hold their own. It’s up to you to decide if you’d be interested in leading in the future. There’s guys that prefer to just be used like guns for their whole career. You point, they shoot. Nothing wrong with that!
