Innovative Special Needs Housing Options in the Bay Area
If you have an adult child with special needs, chances are high that you worry about who will take care of them and how they’ll manage once you’re gone. For many families of special needs adults, housing is one of the primary concerns.
We understand. Recently, Ellen had the opportunity to interview three amazing women, the first of whom was Kris McCann, the Executive Director of Bay Area Housing Corporation (BAHC). Ms. McCann shared some of the amazing work that BAHC is doing to provide adaptive housing, property management, maintenance, and much more for special needs adults. Ellen’s second interview is with Leslie Nordin of Big Wave, an incredible housing community that is being built for special needs adults in the Half Moon Bay area. The idea behind Big Wave started several years ago when a group of Special Olympics parents started talking about the opportunities and community they wanted for their children as they reached adulthood. They noticed how much being part of the team and community helped their children, and they wanted to keep those benefits in every way possible. Ellen’s third interview is with Susan Houghton of Sunflower Hill, an affordable living community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Pleasanton. I live in NM, moved from CA. The support for the disabled is very lacking here. I can not even find an attorney who understands special needs trusts. I would like someone to live in our home with my son, or
a.m. p.m. support. My son is 33 and multi-disabled with autism the primary diagnosis.
