Hey Everyone! Today we're reviewing the four string model of the Squier Classic Vibe 70's Jazz Bass. We reviewed the 5 string model about 3 years ago, and though it had some positive traits I felt it was a bit average when it came to construction and build quality. However the Budget Jazz Bass landscape has shifted significantly over the last few years. Does this Squier have what it takes to stay relevant in 2023? Let's find out!
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

I’ve owned this bass for almost a year now. It came with some slight fret sprout, so I gave it to my luthier who turned this sub £500 bass into a masterpiece! Not only does it play really smoothly, I also love how it looks! The glossy neck complemented by the block inlays gives it such a classic, unbeatable look!

I had one of the earlier models with the Duncan Design pickups and I added an on board Sadowsky pre, and it was killer. I had to add a Jack plate to the lower part of the body, but I gigged it for years succesfully. This bass would likely be great with some mods. Those Duncan Designs can be found cheap on the used market and make a great upgrade.

I am not sure that the VM series was better as a whole. For the Indonesian-made ones, I would guess that they were made at the same factories than the CV series. Major components don't look that different to me. Why should the open gear tuners and bridges be very different - it is always the same stuff since long years now.... At my dealer, there is since several years now hanging a VM Jazz Fretless (it does not have the DD pickups, so imho it is post-2015 ? ). It still has not found a buyer. I also checked it out several times, wondering if I should get it or not. I cannot find major differences with my CV Jag regarding build quality. The Jag has a one-piece natto body compared to the 3-piece agathis one of the VM. Honestly I prefer the Jag's body, the natto being harder (it should stay beautiful for a longer time). Also, P. Balmer had reviewed the VM Fretless Jazz (the DD pick-up version) in one of his books and mentioned some (small) issues. Really, I can't see any big differences here.

Hello, as my main fretted bass, I use since roughly two years now a "CV Jag" bass in the sunburst version. I got it modded by a luthier right after purchase (being no fan of concentric controls and heavy standard tuners), but the "bones" of these bass are excellent! No issue with neck stability and overall fit & finish. Sound and playability of this 32"-scale bass are just great. For me, it sounds like an electric bass should do: not too dark and "oomphy" (like some vintage short scale basses), but not too "piano-like", either (Why should I want to have a bass sounding like a piano - as pianos are made right for that ?). It has a moderate weight, very comfy. I first tested one "Jag" in the black version, then purchased and got modded my current sunburst model and, finally, checked out a further sunburst model for a possible modding into a fretless (but finally, I decided rather to get defretted a 24-fret bass - to have a greater range for slides): I really did not see any major QC issues on these three Jags. Only the "stacked knob"-arrangement may need some fixing right after the unboxing (it did not come as a surprise to me, as I had watched all reviews being available at that time). So here is my conclusion: there are good instruments in the CV series !

I picked up one of these in a natural finish in '19. After a bit of tinkering (BAIII bridge, Duncan QPs, neck finish sanding) it looks, plays, and sounds great. I’m lefty so my options are severely limited. This being one of squier’s lefty offerings. I currently have a standard squier p/j bass? Looking for a good quality jazz bass to compliment it. I’ve looked at sire as well and this review confirms my assumption of sire being the better value. For us lefty’s the sires also come in more colors, an added bonus. Highly considering a sire v5. I bought this bass 3 weeks ago it's a killer. I must have lucked up I have no neck problems. The tone is amazing. The pickups have raised magnets which give it a really aggressive sound. My bass is made in China not Indonesia. I'm playing through an Acoustic B100 combo. The bass is heavier than my player jazz bass though. Maybe Squier saw your review and made some adjustments. I didn't get the Sire V5 it's not in the stores in NYC. I'm not willing to buy an instrument I can't play first. Your reviews are very helpful.....Thanks

I have this but black and a lefty . I changed the pickguard to a vintage tortoise pickguard, changed the hardware to all black hardware, replaced the pickups with EMG J bass pickups(yay for emg direct b stock), and I changed out the electronics and added an EMG b64 3 band preamp that i got a great deal on reverb , i had to mod the preamp because the spacing was too close and wouldn't drop in the control plate, so i removed the pots from the board and added wires to fit the preamp on the control plate. I added a football output jack , and a battery box for the active electronics... id say mod your bass and you could be impressed, idk why your bass was so lackluster, i dont have the neck issue, I had got mine used , and the only problem was the string nut, the guy who owned it before has strung it for righty, and needless to say i had to replace the nut. after i did that and set up, this bass plays like butter...

I've had a Squier Vintage Modified 5-string Jazz for several years now, and was really blown away by the build quality (even though I'm not much of a 5-string player, and I really don't like the glossy neck). Then I bought a Classic Vibe 4-string Jazz and found it was definitely inferior. I didn't like the changes to the bridge, in particular, and the frets were really sharp. No matter though as I bought it strictly as a mod platform to put on a fretless neck and swap in a high-mass bridge. I also wanted to install new DiMarzio noiseless pickups, and that's when I discovered the Classic Vibe's pickup cavities are way too shallow, so I had to rout them out deeper, which I do not have the tools to do properly. It ended up being a decent mod, but I still sold it after a few years.
It *almost* feels like Fender deliberately downgraded the quality going from the Vintage Modified to the Classic Vibe, to correspond with the similar downgrade from the American Elite to the American Ultra. They didn't want people realizing Squier instruments were often better than Fender! (Of course, I've already done my own video about how I sold my American Ultra Jazz and switched to a Squier 40th Anniversary.)

I don't know about the "Classic Vibe" but I've had the Vintage Modified (2007) for well over a decade and have played it against several Player models during that time that, while for sure were nice, either equaled or simply lacked the tonal diversity and wallop that this relatively inexpensive model offers. I needed to be convinced that some of the other Fender models were/weren't superior in terms of tone and playability. Maybe I got lucky with mine or maybe I'm just used to it. Still, the sustain and tone gets me pumped every time I play it. I was so impressed that I contacted Seymour Duncan to complement them on their pup design and they reported that they sent their design to the top Korean pup manufacturer who produced the "Duncan Design" version and that those pups were then sent to various bass guitar OEMs for installation. To me, the DD pups sound like a marriage of the Quarter Pounder and Apollo. If you can grab one of these for +/- $300 - 350, I think it's a steal. If mine ever went up in smoke, I'd pay even more to replace it. Totally subjective, but there's just that certain something about the wood, neck, frets, balance, tone, and playability that suits me.

@@giovannibonapace4250 The wood material doesn't add that much to the cost even if it was double the price of the wood used it would not add a huge amount to a mass produced product where wood is bought in bulk. What can happen is wood that hasn't been dried out for long enough (not seasoned enough) is then used. The fallacy though is that ppl seem to think guitars & basses cost a lot to manufacture, that the woods cost a lot of money. They are mass produced products done on CNC & then finished on a production line with ppl doing a certain job. The costs apart from labour whether in the US, Japan, Indonesia, China are the same. The QC is where some extra cost is justified, but it's really the name, the advertising & mark-up due to an inherent belief that certain places make better products is why the price is so different.

They existed simultaneously from about 2008 until 2019 - the VM basses were made in Indonesia and were slightly cheaper, and the CV ones were made in China and were the most expensive Squiers. It was these Chinese CV Squiers that were hailed as amazing basses (though the VM line was also considered great value). In 2019, the two lines were basically merged into the current classic vibe line and their production moved from China to Indonesia, which is when the drop in quality happened.

Most of their basses have very low quality components (generic bridge and tuning pegs of very poor quality, generic pickups, poor electronics, basswood body, etc.) and the only thing that stands out is that they look good. Also, for what little they offer, they are too expensive. In my country, Chile, this bass costs around 700 dollars, a brutality for the little it offers. I consider that , there are brands that are not so famous, and these brands offer cheap or medium price instruments, but their components are excellent, which translates into reliable instruments and much better than a Squier bass. Brands like Harley Benton, Sire, Cort and many others have pleasantly surprised me. I hope you can do a review of the G&L L-2000 tribute bass (made in Indonesia).😁

I have thought the same thing for years. The Classic Vibe series was a big step DOWN in quality from the Vintage Modified series. The hardware and controls feel cheaper, the necks feel less substantial and unstable, the pickups are generic and sterile sounding compared to the Duncan Designed pickups that came in the Vintage Modified. The Classic Vibe Jaguar is not even a full scale bass any more. It is 32".
It's a personal thing, but I don't like the thick finish on the back of the CV necks either. Add to that the fact that the prices have DOUBLED while the quality went down, and I don't think the Classic Vibes are worth the money any more. You can pay less than half that and get a Harley Benton or SX and the quality will be about the same.

Hi, imho a Jag does not need to be 34" scale to sound good. In all CV Jag review vids which I listened and watched (multiple times...) before deciding to go for it (and its modding), I found it really great sounding. The Pawn Shop Reversed Jag was also a 32" and sounded great. Unfortunately, at the time it was on the market, purchasing a new bass was not one of my priorities....I'd wish F. would bring out something like this again, better non-reversed (but ok, I do not dig alder bodies. They are too soft, may be for that reason, too, I did not get one). And, last but not least, there is the Affinity Jag, also a 32" scale bass, which got lots of attention. Unfortunately, it has a poplar body (this wood is also too soft for me) and I would prefer the bucker being installed closer to the bridge. Having studied the question of scale length intensively in the past (including some trials with 31" necks), I am now convinced that 32" scale deserves much more attention. Not sure that kind of a "contemporary Leo" would decide to go (again) for a 34" scale having modern strings, pickups etc. as well as modern manufacturing technologies available! The 32" scale just works very well for bass.
