  • Hey everyone! We're reviewing the Squier Paranormal Jazz Bass. I was very lucky to get one. This is Squier's latest and greatest bass model sporting a unique look, control layout, and more! Let's check this thing out!
    Edit: I mentioned that the P bass pickup is a humbucker, it's a split single coil. Sorry!
    Big thanks to Dom @ ThirdFloorGuitars for setting up my instruments. You can find him at www.thirdfloorguitars.com

    I do wish they had used a telecaster headstock but its not enough to keep me from wanting one of these. I believe there were a couple high end manufacturers that had a version of this except they used actual 50s precision style single coils.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  Před 4 lety +9

      Yeah I agree, a tele headstock would be icing on the cake here!

      You know squier makes the squier classic vibe 50s p bass. It looks like this with a tele headstock.

    • @rubbadubdub6543
      @rubbadubdub6543 Před rokem

      I think the idea is that it’s a cross between a jazz and 54 p-bass, a bit like Fender’s Parallel universe series. If it had a tele headstock it would just be a 54 p-bass with jazz pickups, wouldn’t it?

    That is a great sounding jazz bass! Love the sound of that neck pickup with the tone rolled back halfway. So many tonal choices just with the two volumes and two tones. No doubt those pickups are stacked humbuckers. Great review.

    What you forget is that it is modelled to the 50's P bass with that small pick up, not the split pickup. So that is why the neck pickup can sound
    like a P bass.

      Thanks Raymond! Indeed, I actually had the CV5 at the same time as this and though I liked the CV pickups better, I thought the Paranormal felt better and was an overall better package. Looks wise, yeah the CV stuff looks awesome... however the QC issues that are running rampant through the CV stuff (not all basses, but a lot of them have sloppy QC) do not make me confident in them.

    I agree Lobster: the Chinese built Squiers do feel and sound better then the Indonesia built ones. I used to own a 2018 Chinese made Squier Classic Vibe 50's P bass, sold it in January because I needed cash, and then in April bought a new Squier Classic Vibe 50's P bass made in Indonesia (different color). I noticed the difference right away and now I miss the Chinese made one. Never thought I would say that.

    This may be what I've been searching for. I want a jazz style bass without the typical control panel and input location. I play right handed guitars lefty/upside down so jazz basses usually just have too much going on with all the knobs and input jack right where I'd be trying to rest my arm/play. This is unusually perfect for me.

I love this control layout, so many times during the church gig I just rolled off the volume knob of one of the pickups and used the 3 way switch as a mute switch (I don't have a tuner pedal). It stinks because I'm only listening to my stuff through my amp and desktop (usually not using headphones when editing), so when there ends up being noise that I don't hear through the amp, I don't hear it until someone points it out. Other J's in this price range were noisier through my amp when on one pickup, and I usually try and point that out.

Os I found this bass used with upgraded fender v mod pick ups and I couldn't be happier with this instrument. The controls are so cool, they are easy to understand but you can get so many different tones out of this bass. I had an active bass before, but got more confused and could not focus so much on playing.
    Only thing I don't like is the pick guard, it looks cool, but it has sharp edges, which does not make sense because the rest of the instrument feels well built and finished.

    Just bought one of these used in white. The previous owner put a multilayered pick guard and a bone nut on it. I just installed a fender high mass bridge on it, because the screws in the bridge were cutting into my hand while palm muting (gues shorter screws could have done the job as well)
    Have to agree with you, the pickups don't add much color to the sound. But other than that, great bass! I really digg the look. Although it is a bit on the heavy side. Played 2 gigs with it now, and I think I'm going to switch to some more premium pickups. I saw someone here in germany selling some used kloppmann vintage jazz pickups at half the price. I have this bass and love it. The fretwork is really good, noticeably better than what came on my Sterling short scale or Squier 60's Classic Vibe but not up to the level of my EBMM Stingray Special which is unbelievably good. The only real negative thing of this bass that actually turned out to be a positive is the metal plating on the chromed plate around the volume/tone knobs is very thin and cheap and mine was scratched up the first day I used the bass just from my fingernails hitting it. I never had an issue like this before on any of my other basses so the plating is really poorly done. I ended up sanding the chrome plating totally off because it looked so bad using graduating grades of sand paper until it was completely removed. Turns out the plate is made of solid copper and is gorgeous now!! Looks way better and no more scratches! Why they would mess it up with cheap plating is beyond me.

Spent a day or 2 hemming & hawing over whether to pull the trigger on pre ordering 1 a year ago as the last thing I needed was another 4 string. I thought it was too friggin’ cool though & would probably regret not getting a hold of 1 if it wound up being a limited run type of thing that ultimately made it “rare”. However i explained to him ive researched alot on these. Unless Canada won't import bone nuts i think he is reading from a 2018 or below model. Touche though. I believe fender has outsourced to several companies. My 2019 was a diff China code than my 2015. Who knows man? Heheh. I do know the differences though in each build now srat wise from 50s to 70s which isn't in their description. 60s gets grounding paint in cavity and full mass trem block. No skunk stripe period correct thin Indian laurel (2019 model) small trem block in older.
      50s no ground paint small block but gets skunk stripe and actual decent 5 way switch and tone in bridge mod....
      70s gets skunk sripe small block and no shield paint (i may be off here) and that's about it. On all the new models. However the only china made I've seen so far are 60s. The indos are usually the 70s , and 50s. A couple 50s I heard few. Were china. What a ride!! Hahahah.

    I’ve been wanting a PJ bass for the nice blend of tones you can get out of it. I prefer the PJ sound, basically.
    Having said that, this 54 Paranormal keeps getting really high marks from everyone who reviews it and I really like how it sounds, and for that price!
    I’m going to go try one out to see how it feels, but it’s looking like a solid choice for this beginner.
    What would you suggest as a pick up upgrade for down the line? I’m thinking something with a bit more thickness for the neck pick up to get just a little more of a P vibe.
    When I heard how this one sounded on the neck position I was definitely into the somewhat more P’ish vibe it had so I’d want to enhance that with an upgrade.
