- Aired Sept. 14, 1961, in "One Starry Night," the first episode of the fourth season of the Donna Reed Show. One month later "Goodbye Cruel World" (the hit version) made its chart debut. In mid-December, the tune peaked at No. 2 on Cash Box and No. 3 on Billboard.
In the Jeep alongside James is his brother, Johnny Darren. - Hudba
My brothers and I watched this episode when it aired...afterwards I would sing the song and they would guess if I would add "Army" or "Circus"...ah the memories...loved the Donna Reed Show...the innocent years...
I had the 45 and also remember this version on the Donna Reed Show (which was a great show).
Yep. Must see TV!
Amen such wonderful Years Loved the Dona Reed Show She was such a Lovely Lady and a Great Person.
But could you sing it in Italian?
@@ClarkeMarek Non parlo italiano
I was born in 68 but listen to oldies mainly. I do not know any singers of today. This song makes me think of life in 1961
I woke up to Donna Reed show about a month ago and this scene was playing. I was so captivated. I never heard this song or artist before, but i had to look it up. I love this song and Donna Reed show and they were way before my time. I'm an old soul.
I listened to this 'back in the day' on my transistor radio as a kid. Didn't know then that decades later, I'd be enjoying James .. As Vic Fontaine ... singing 'standards' in a hollosuite night club. Still performing at the age of 86 here in 2022.
Love this clip, Jimmy Darren as divinely gorgeous now as ever and still got that beautiful voice x
I agree. James Darren was usually thought of as an actor. But he did a few records on the side. He sang the theme for a racing movie he made with Doug McClure. Can't remember what it was called. It was made in the early 60s.
I loved this song & adored James Darren( loved him since I saw him in the movie Gidget w/Sandra Dee)!
Happy 65th anniversary to a fun movie--Gidget.
I LOVE James in this scene!!
I only knew the song when he sang. Im off to join the circus
Top song
It's the end of the world it ended when you said goodbye!
" THIS IS THE GREATEST SONG 🎵 🙌 EVER "
Los Angeles radio stations KFWB and KRLA were playing both versions well into 1962 on the Colpix label. I had one of them.
Love James Darren looks and talent and my favorite song. Miss those days.
My favorite song to!
I'm 72 I remember this song love and respect from coventry England x
Awesome. Love him just as much now. Sent my son to get me a LP, CD anything with him. Store owner who was my age was so shocked at a 23 year kid asking for it he special ordered a CD. When my son went to pick it up he said my mom just said she wanted to hear Moondoggie sing again. He laughed and said Gidget . My son said what kind of language are you all talking?
Wow I've never heard or seen this before.
I never saw this before either & kept thinking he would say “CIRCUS” INSTEAD OF...” OFF TO JOIN THE ARMY!”🤣
Anything James Darren did l ❤️ because l was T.V. movie in 💕😘 plus l was in awe of this Gourgous Man in T.V. Your Fan Forever💯🙏🌟💞🎶🎵🤩💞
Nice memory.

Showing my age but this is the first record I ever bought.
You are as young as you feel.
Don't figure out my age, but I remember seeing this episode.
Love Donna Reed.
Me too. Amazing woman & so admired her!
When James Darren played Buzz Barry i thought that was a great April Fools Day joke day it had a great ending with Mary Shelley Faberes having the last laugh on her friends when he shows up at her dance when she thought he was gone i thought was a great way to back Dr. Stone for helping him stay at the Stones house because he had the measles! WHAT a great episode for April Fools Day Classic Tv at its finest James Darren what a handsome man!
He was so handsome & handsome now, as well! Such a truly “nice guy” to that just adds to his attraction, married happily all these yrs to his childhood sweetheart! What a great guy!♥️
Oh no you're right! It was The Donna Reed Show!
James Darren gran Actor y excelente cantante

This is on an episode of the Donna Reed show. I love this.
Goodbye Cruel World , ℹ'm to join the SERVICE ...
Reminds me of Cliff Richard.
Just saw this episode of "The Donna Reed Show" this morning on MeTV. Very cool! I would LOVE to have a wife like Donna Stone (Donna Reed's character on the show). What a GORGEOUS woman! This was a great episode, and I had never heard this song before. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing!
I just watched that very same episode this morning on MeTV.
Yes, David, was truly a great time in mid-20th Century suburban America, when more educated and sophisticated women remained at home to take care of their children, because the economy was such the man's sole income could often sustain his family. "Housewives" didn't used to be a demeaning term, until so-called feminists (a front for a Marxist agenda anyway) sabotaged it, was simply the status quo for most married women and mothers from the late 1940s through early 1970s. Of course there had always been married and single women who had gainful employment. But employment and careers for married middle-class women in the mid-20th Century wasn't as necessary as it had become by the later 20th Century and remains today.
Anyway, another beautiful, classy and sophisticated lady in classic television was Barbara Billingsley (who portrayed "June Cleaver" in the TV series "Leave It to Beaver"), who was a young widowed mother of some boys in real life. To the day she died Billingsley (along with her co-star, Hugh Beaumont, who portrayed husband and father "Ward Cleaver") was revered by the young actors who played their sons and sons' friends in the TV series.
The late Frank Bank, who portrayed "Clarence 'Lumpy' Rutherford" (a friend of Tony Dow's elder brother "Wally Cleaver") in "Leave It to Beaver," wrote in his memoir that he and Ken Osmond (who portrayed another of "Wally's" friends and frequent antagonist "Eddie Haskell") looked up to Beaumont and Billingsley even as adults, and would often ask themselves if "Ward & June" would approve of some questionable behavior. Evidently, Beaumont and Billingsley looked after and loved all the young actors in the production as virtually surrogate parents, since they were also both parents of younger offspring at the time in real life. "Beaver" was truly one of those TV productions where art imitated life and, in return, life imitated art.I once interviewed Jerry "The Beaver" Mathers, and he told me pretty much the same things about which Bank wrote in his book. All those boys loved their TV parents, second in respect only to their actual parents. That isn't the case with every TV production (especially nowadays). But it certainly was for at least four of them--"The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet," "Lassie," "Leave It to Beaver" and "The Donna Reed Show."
And the ladies who portrayed the mothers in "Lassie" (Jan Clayton and June Lockhart, as "Ellen Miller" and "Ruth Martin," respectively) were also much-loved by their TV sons, Tommy Rettig ("Jeff Miller") and Jon Provost ("Timmy Martin"). Hugh Reilly, who portrayed TV dad "Paul Martin" in "Lassie," was also held in high esteem by Provost.
And also please take a look at "Harriet Nelson" in "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet," another classy lady from a mid-20th Century television sitcom (and the radio version before that) who portrayed a fictional mother, but of her own real-life boys, David and Ricky Nelson, the latter who became TV's first "teen idol" after the influence of Elvis Presley, and a rockabilly pioneer and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer in his own right. Harriet was just about as glamorous (especially as the series progressed) and stylish as "Donna Stone," but much more prone to making wisecracks and being that fun mom many wish we would have had. I would also add the Nelson men snacked on sweets much more than in the "Stone" household, ice cream and Coca-Cola being particularly prominent favorites throughout the series run. Of course Coca-Cola was a sponsor of the show for some of that time. The ice cream came from Ozzie and Ricky Nelson in real life, evidently.
In reality, Harriet Nelson was probably the most well-off financially of these three TV sitcom moms, since Ozzie Nelson (her husband, who portrayed the father and husband in the series) owned the production company and the series (to this day) remains the longest-running (at 14 years), live action episodic sitcom (if one discounts the animated "The Simpsons," which has lasted double that, at 28 years) in TV history. Reed and her husband, Tony Owen, also owned their own production company (Todon Productions). Yet "The Donna Reed Show" only lasted about half as long as "Ozzie & Harriet." But how many of us would wish "Marge Simpson" as our mother, given the other options of Harriet Nelson, "Ruth Martin," "June Cleaver" and/or "Donna Stone?"
Take care, then, Dave, and keep enjoying those great TV families I hope we will always hold as ideals, for their positive influences in our lives.
Same here. When that episode aired, that song was in my head for months
Just seen this episode of the Do na Reed Show this morning. Great episode.
Does he sing this song anymore?
Excellent. That's one of the episodes I specifically remember seeing the night it aired. Darren's character and Mary (Shelley Fabares) had a single-episode romance. My silly observations: James Darrren's lips are prefectly synchronized with the vocal audio, while brother Johnny slaps his knee out of rhythm. THEN Johnny's shocking behavior of smoking a cigarette on a such a wholesome family show. Of course, I remember dad Dr. Stone (Carl Betz) occasionally smoking. Naughty!
Andy Griffith occasionally smokes too as Andy Taylor
Smoking was common back in the 50s and 60s. People weren’t aware of the dangers back then. Cigarette companies even sponsored some shows, such as I Love Lucy, which often worked smoking into the gags.
My oh my - I remember this ! ! Forgot about the Army spin , but I saw this .
What a treat, thank you!
"The Donna Reed Show" !
Saw the episode when it was first broadcast.
Don't figure out my age. LOL.
So cool!
All thumbs up...!!!
I seen this on TV and I was technically 11 at the time, the following month I turned 12. But I was so confused when the released version came out, 'cause I could have swore it was about the Army. lol
what cute version
I wasn't a fan of The Donna Reed Show, so I missed this! Very cool, smoking cigarettes and all! Thanks for posting.
I have seen this version on the donna reed show
It's nostalgia
The hit version of this song was not "Off to join the Army." ...The lyrics in the hit were " I'm off to join the Circus". I remember vividly watching Donna Reed Show Sept. 14, 1961, and saw him singing this version. I was 10 years old in 6th Grade. I turned 11 two months later. Great memory.
That means you were born in 1950----you're older than I am.
Interesting 😊
So presumably he’s playing himself here, as James Darren the singer / actor. His brother asks him to sing “Gidget” and later he tells his brother to refer any calls from Hollywood to his mess sergeant.
Sitting next to James Darren is his real life brother John Darren.
Their original family name was Ercolani.
viewing: 9:40 PM SUN 13-Mar-2022. Spring clocks forward.
THE ACTOR SINGS NICELY
He WAS a singer as well. Released the “Circus” version of this on vinyl and it was a massive hit for him.
So he did have a singing career too.
That’s my uncle and my grandpa
Swoon😍💞
He didn't need any chorus, ever, but it helped in the arrangement, to sell records.
Surprised to find out James Darren was the father of former CNN anchorman Jim Moret , who looks just like his father.
Oh my gosh! I never knew that either! What a surprise & thanks for sharing!
@@karenstrycharz1499 Sure.Jim Moret wrote a book about himself titled, "The Last Day of My Life,". I ended up buying it on amazon. Like so many he suffered from depression and considered suicide. I think it helped any who read it that also suffered the same.
James Darren should have sang in Time Tunnel.
Jimmy Darrens my friends uncle
How lucky your “Friend’s Uncle” is! Great connection for you. Always loved James Darren!
😊😍🤗💋💝❤💞
ver heard thanks

He’s so cute
like the original this one is a real bobble head
Officer Jim Corigan from T.J Hooker.
Reminds me of the 60s. Bobby was a real honey
He was indeed!
🤠♥️
I’ve met him
How lucky( blessed) you are!
Vic Fontaine Star Trek DS9😁🤣😂
It's Vic Fontaine!
It's odd changing circus to army. All the circus aesthetics and tune are still there so it feels super awkward
Yes, I thought the same thing & never heard it before but James Darren could sing 🎶 “Mary Had A Little Lamb” & I would love it. Just adored James Darren & so handsome!
joining on the circus not the army!
What show was this taken from?
Donna Reed show.
Instead of "the circus" , James decided that 'mean fickle women" should turn him into cannon fodder.......smart.....
Just 1961....Uncle Sam would offer plenty opportunity for broken hearted clowns to get wrecked for many worthy causes...
PaulLonden
I guess the "shoot me out of a cannon" oddly fits the Army scenario. As long as they were rewriting lyrics, that could have used a little more finesse.
Exactly.
Seth MacFarlane bears a striking resemblance to James Darren.
Vic Fontaine forever.
Seth MacFarlane bears a striking resemblance to Christopher Knight who played Peter Brady on the Brady bunch. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Is Darren his real last name ? or is it his stage name ? He seems like his real last name would be an Italian last name , does anyone know ? thanks !
He is James Ercolani.
Yeah ! I knew it ! thank you very much :) !
Wasn't this on The Patty Duke Show?
It was on The Donna Reed Show!
Died way too young. The ticker gave out on him.
Eddie Renegade I googled him and apparently he is 81 and very much alive!
You’re thinking of Bobby Darrin, not James Darren. Bobby had the bad heart his whole (short) life.
@@jtandme-ot9cl Now, he is 82, will be 83 on Jun. 8 (2019). Played the time traveler 'Tony Newman' in "The Time Tunnel" for the one season of 30 episodes, 1966-67.
Vic Fontaine lives, despite contracting the COVID.
🤣🤣🤣HE IS VERY MUCH ALIVE AND IN GREAT HEALTH & LOOKING JUST AS HANDSOME AS EVER EDDIE, THANKFULLY, I MIGHT ADD! You are undoubtedly thinking of Bobby Darin who died young & was Sandra Dee’s ex-husband. Sad he died so young & so did Sandra Dee. Loved them all.
Awesome tune....but palleeease, take it easy on the eye make-up!
😃😃🇨🇦🇨🇦🤑🤑
I burned my draft card in 1972.
I got on the bus and served my country. So glad I did 🇺🇸
Who is singing this, it's not James Darren.
cool little tv gem... but this song doesnt work so well with the Army change, the whole circus music passage and the lyrics just don't make sense if he isn't off to join the circus lol
I liked this but the Army bit doesn't really work compared to Circus.
That car needs better suspension
funny.....
Utube doesn't have the original kazoo version with the backup girlies. I guess this will have to do. God did that Donna Reed show really suck. They had the worst writers in TV history
Whatever did he go for the rest of his life
Vic Fontaine lives.
I wondered the same thing.
I adored Time Tunnel.
His brother is actually better looking
It could've been adapted better.
Hold on… The Beatles will save music in 3 years.

What a Stinko song 🎵 ....not even James Darren can save it....
