GINO & HIS JINKS - Beggar of Love (1950s?) By Request!
zhlédnutí 8KPřed 7 lety
One of our channel subscribers, a devout R&B/Doo-wop fan, asked if we could locate this tune. It took months, but we finally found it ... even though the audio has a bit of distortion here and there. If we ever find an upgrade, we'll repost it. Based on the style and label design, we're guessing 1950s. If anyone knows for sure, please let us know.

Crewe is best known for his many years of work with the 4 Seasons, plus his own instrumental hit, "Music to Watch Girls By" (1967), but this obscure record shows he could sing a bit like Johnnie Ray.

Nice doo-wopish group with female lead. Made the KTKT (Tucson) Top 40 in April 1962, not a huge surprise since the label's home was also in Tucson.

For reasons unknown, even to our friend, Beverly, it seems this great song has never been posted. So we are pleased to share it now. Here is how Beverly explains what happened: "We were moderately pleased with how 'Don't Say You Don't Remember' did in mid-1971, but in September, when it seemed to have run its course, Scepter released my next single, 'When Michael Calls'. "For some unknown reaso...

did you say late October 1967? Hmmm.....i'd been wanting to pinpoint that. I am told that close of 1967 was the end for local (chicago area) bands to get a breakthrough on WLS radio airplay. After that no new ones were permitted by the front office, (only established buckinghams, NC6, etc.). So the Family packed up and headed (with Bobby Whiteside) to west coast and metamorphosed into Raintree

First time I heard this catchy tune was back in the mid 80's. I was a big Cheech and Chong fan back then and they had a popular skit called 'Santa Claus and his old lady'. I was listening to cheech and chong records at my friends house and Cheech sings some lyrics from Donde Esta Santa and my friend says something like "You know thats a real spanish x-mas song" and then left the room and came back in with one of those small looking records and it had Donde Esta Santa Claus by 12 year old Augie Rios. I thought it was great and would bug him to play the song every time I was over at his house. For years and years I forgot about it until one day I was watching Narcos (Season 2, Brilliant show) and the song actually played in one of the eps and the nostalgia that flooded through my body was so powerful I was almost in tears.

The original and best version of this song. A lot of people think George Strait (not a favourite of mine) did this first - Terry Stafford not only did it first but sang it way better and it comes across as not unlike something either Charlie Rich or Elvis would have done in Terry's hands whereas Strait just sounds modern country.
