The Champions League is the apex of club football and that makes the final of the competition the biggest singular game in club football.
Whether you’ve won the competition 14 times or you’ve never won it before, the final of the UEFA Champions League will always be a difficult game to play. But if you’ve never won it before, the task becomes exponentially harder for you.
The latest champions are actually the perfect example. On paper, Manchester City had more quality than Inter Milan in every area on the pitch and so should have cruised through the final, but they found the game extremely difficult. Even Kevin De Bruyne admitted in his post-match interview that it was not the best game from him and his teammates.
Inter attempted 100% more shots than City did and won 100% more corners than Pep’s side got in that game. The Milan club also had a similar passing accuracy with Manchester City, a club that is known for their consistently near-perfect passing.
It was generally just a difficult game for Man City and they needed a shot from their defensive midfielder to clinch victory. But why was it difficult? The simple answer is because it’s the Champions League final and they had never won it before.

Fun Fact: In the early 80s, there were two underrated England team who've won European Cup (UEFA Champions League 🏆) only once or twice. There were Nottingham Forest who've win 🏆 in 1979/1980 and 1980/1981 season meanwhile Aston Villa have won 🏆 only once in 1981/1982 season and then never be appeared in the tournament at all. What a very underrated England team.
Back then teams like Nottingham and Villa had a underdog story with a huge mindset
Another Fun Fact: Nottingham Forest had even spent some years in 3rd-tier of English football, which was happened between 2005 and 2008. On the other side, Hamburg (losing finalist of 1980 and the winner 3 years later) were now in 2nd-tier of German football since 2018 and narrowly missed out the promotion this year.
